Hey Brad, the fishin is hot up here, big bluefin, yellowfin, dolphin, some makos, big knotheads, tautog, as well as bigger rockfish are starting to show up. (Waiting on John R to push em our way). Trailer her up and make the ride north, you wont be bored. If you want some of that german brew though, you will have to bring your own!!!

Hopefully you AND Hoover will be drinking that German brew together! Hows the pooch doing?

Eins, Zwei, Drei, Zufa! Ein PROZIT!

Miss bavarian beer ... Rather have the 5 inches of rain than the 20 degree, 25 knot wind I'm debating to fish over this weekend. The snot / SaltH2O mix freezes inside the nose and cracks the skin around the edges but last best shot at a FIFTY!!!

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

People are making a mint off of mojo's and parachute rigs, getting in the 20 to 30 dollar range for the 'chutes which dont really last that long. The mojo's are what really do the job.from 16 to 40 oz's depending on the water depth and chartuese tails. We use them on three ways and I like to fish a bunker spoon on the long end. (green drones also work real well.) The chartuese colors are the real deal for the big rockfish around here. Not sure if you know what Im talking about, I think they are more a local thing but they sure catch fish. The parachutes are like sea witches on steroids.

mojo's link- swede's is a local guy buy he sells a lot of stuff- they call the one in the top picture a mojo but I consider that to be more of a parachute. I'll see if I can find a better picture of one.

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Miles,
Do you jig the mojo like a parachute? Also, are you attaching them to umbrella rigs, or just using them individually? I've never seen a setup like that, must be a local thing like you mention. Might be worth trying up here.

Miles Offshore 11-07-2003 04:22 PM

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Hey Scott, we fish them on a three way. Use a short leader for the mojo~2 or 3 ft, a long leader 10 to 15 ft for the parachute, which I like the big spoon on instead of the chute most of the time. We will mostly just slow troll em, wire is the best, but shallower water you can bottom bounce but it is not nesesary. They really work well and the pictures dont really do them justice as far as the size goes. You can probably see that the mojo itself is really nothing more than a big inline sinker powder coated green or whatever with eyes and a big shad/swimming tail. Hope this helps- they are the real deal down here, or up here for Brad.

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Oh, umbrella rigs will work with the parachutes also, but I dont pull them much. If I do the green #4 drone is the ticket for me. You need to try them-Im pretty sure you will like them, after all the rockfish you guys catch are the same ones(except for the resident fish) we are getting ready to catch soon here hopefully!!!

My typical spread will be a mojo on wire down the center , 2 planers off each stern corner (#4's with rapala super shad raps pretty close to the boat- no more than 20 ft of line plus 15 ft of leader. Outside long I like to run inlines on each side , two different sizes, 20 ft leaders(100,125 lb test) with maybe an umbrella on one side and another big spoon, parachute etc on the other side. I know yo7u didnt ask for all that but i thought it might give you a perspective on the way we do it here. How about you guys??

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Hmmm, maybe but I dont think so Brad, they feed primarily on large menhaden, eels etc, The prefered method of trolling here is as slow as she goes, maybe 2.5 knots the ideal speed. Early in the season , now till x-mas you will mostly find the larger fish down deep(mostly because of the large numbers of boats persuing them keeping them down). When you find them on top later in the season-January to about the middle of Feb depending on water temperature, they will be in the upper part of the water column. Funny thing about it , you are subject to catching a flounder or a 200 lb bluefin 1/2 mile off the beach!!(up too 3 miles out is the current max federal eez limit) Large swimming plugs as well as bucktails (bugeye 3/8 oz with strip of porkrind also work well) A lot of people love the Manns "stretch" series, 25's and 30's. I wont pull them, they are dangerous(fly at you when they pop out of the water) and they love to tangle the rest of your lines while deployed.I havnt seen any of the style lures you show being used although I have given thought to pulling a green machine and/or a nekkid balyhoo just for $hits and giggles to see if they will work.

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Colors ?? Shiny,Solid ,?This Platypus can be pulled slow ? 2.5 ? That maybe to slow,Our boats Drift faster than that.Mybe the angle on the head gives it action at slower speed. The inner tube is also at a angle. When I came out with this lure I cut the angle both ways up/down(which shows in the photo) The upper cut came out the winner.Dives from side to side then will surface & run like a "BIRD" then Dive again. The under cut did just the opposite. Keep My brain work'n for a lil bit here.I can make the "TAIL" longer & use Mylar for a inner skirt.

Green /chartuese, with eyes and silver and or gold mylar. If it swims side to side then it should work. What would it weigh and will it work/swim when I put in on the bottom???

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Miles,
We've had great success with the Mann's Stretch 25 (dorado color), but you're right, heads up when pulling them out of the water whle underway! You definitely can't troll them with anything else in the spread. The bunker spoon is starting to catch on up this way over the past 2 seasons. Guys do really well with them way down inside Cape Cod Bay over the large shoals. Single Rapala Magnums work well, as do 9'er rigs (local version of a drail/umbrella rig). Those Mann's Sea Snakes work well also, but if bluefish are around, forget it, they'll shred those tails in an instant. At least you can replace the tails though.

You were seeing right Captain Brad, 16 to 40 OZ's. Now tell me who pours a 1.6 oz lead

Bigger rockfish tend to stay under and around the outer fringes of the rest of the school, the water we fish can go from 10 ft right on the beach to 100 ft very quickly with a 5 knot current so you need heavy to keep it on the bottom. This is of course to get the main bait down as well. It is heavy but I normally use 15/30 lb stand up rods and TLD 20's. A lot of folks like the penn gti's but I think shimano has it all over them. Anyways when you catch em 2 at a time and each fish is 20 lbs or better you need something with a little ummmph.LOL, Oh BTW the new state record bluefin has been broken twice this week. Dr. Jim (of the fishing show fame) had on earlier in the week around 395 or so. Someone else had on yesterday around 400. (5 and a half hours in the chair) not me, dont want any parts of them. Have been hearing reports that commercial boys from wherever having fish over 400 lbs dressed out.Anyways , the other rockfish lure that has really taken off around here lately are the storm wildeyes, and the 'Tomic plugs- Scott- you guys pulling them up north???

Craig,
We're using the Wild Eyes with great success but I'm not familiar with the Tomic. What's that all about?

Miles Offshore 11-12-2003 09:31 PM

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Hey Scott, heres a pic of a Tomic, troll them deep and shallow as well, heres a link to their website

http://www.tomiclures.com/
there are several styles but the classic is the one used around here. Really like the single hook as well.

Re: BORED Straight Flush !

Craig,
I'll have to look for them around here and give them a try next season. They look nice, and with that design they must wiggle like a bastard! The single is hook is really nice, especially if you get into bluefish, makes them easy to get off the hook.
