250 Suzuki four Stroke
 
I am getting ready to install a 250 Four Stroke in my 1978 23'. Have any of you guys heard any news on the performance I might expect.

I was thinking of a blown 502 nirto motor with surface drive. Im wondering if i need trim tabs? I wish I could afford a new motor.

Powerboat Reports has some very good info on the new 250 Suzuki. One of the editors has a 25 Contender that's about 10 years old. It had an EFI yamaha 250. They ran all the fuel and speed numbers and estimated costs per hour of operation. Then they mounted the 250 Suzuki, guess what? I bet you thought the Suzuki had a lower top speed, WRONG, the same as the Yamaha about 40 knots! I bet you thought the Yamaha had a better hole shot, WRONG, by a seat of the pants measurement, the Suzuki had a better hole shot. That blows away those two myths. Overall the Suzuki saved between 27% and 41% in total operating costs. Range on the boat improved quite a bit too. Good job Suzuki for making one hell of a motor.

I too am thinking of the Suzuki now that my old 275 Merc ate its gears last weekend. Have you bought it and what do you think? I have also been offered a sweet deal on a Verado by a local dealer although the 275 is out of the question because of the octane requirements.....

I have to admit, I'm pretty impressed with the performance of the big Suzukis. If I was repowering today, I would seriously consider one over a 2-stroke DI. The guy I bought my boat from just repowered his 23' Pacific CC with the Suzi 225 and loves it.

Well fellows, we picked up the 23 Seacraft with the new 250 four stroke Suzuki up on Friday and it was in the water by Saturday morning. Cannot get over the difference between our old 225 two stroke and this new bad boy. Here are the numbers with the 16X20 prop.

In conclusion, the new 250 four stroke is much faster and fuel efficient than the 225 two stroke. To give you an idea, top speed with the 225 two stroke was 34.7 knots compared to 40.2 knots with the 250 four stroke. Oh yeah, hole shot is ten times better. That sucker has soooo much torque to go along with the 16X20 prop. Only good things to say about this new motor.

Just put my first 25 hours on a new Suz 250 on a 23CC. Good hole shot. Top speed w/4 adults on board and 100 gal = 40 MPH per GPS. Cruise at 4400RPM at 25-28MPH and 10-11 GPH fuel burn.

Interesting point is Briguy's 23cc with twin 115 Suzis runs about identical to Trevor's 250 at all ranges and I am estimating about the same cost to rig. Tough decision.

Have any of you guys put a new suzuki on a 20' open seacraft yet, I have two I am restoring and would like some input on this motors performance the 200 that is I will probobly keep one for me, and wind up selling the other. thanks for advice

I would be very hesitant about putting any 4 stroke 200 on the back of a vintage 20 seacraft regardless of floor and transom heights. These were originally spec'd with lightweight 115 4cyl carb motors. Now, our fearless leader has rigged a 140 Suzi 4 stroke that he likes on his restored 20...

Good point, John...especially on original, unrestored older Seacrafts. In Jason's case, since he replaced just about everything on the boat and used weight saving Nida-Core for the floor, etc his boat is most likely lighter than when it rolled out of the factory. The key factor when repowering an older boat with a four stroke is not so much the weight difference.....but rather, getting the boat rebalanced so that it sits in the water properly. If the weight difference is slight....you can usually remedy the problem by relcoating batteries, etc further forward. If the weight difference is significant...you will most likely have to move the console and/or gas tank forward.

Just bought 20' 78 Sceptre from Dave (that 70's boat), and thinking about putting a Suzuki 140 on it, or a new Mercury 135HP 4 stroke (2005) on her. Dave says the transom is solid, so he did not raise it. Do you think I might have issues with it. Suzuki looks to be about 410lbs...(I am guessing Merc would be about the same) and with the Sceptre, I would think more weight would be forward. Your thoughts..?

If the 20 is up to the task you should be OK with a 140, raised transom, improved draingage, forward fuel tank, and rebalanced like Ed says above. The Merc 135 or a lighter V6 would scream nice but I wouldn't want to go higher than a 140, but I don't have a 20 and there are some that do and have 200s and 225 DFI motors too
