Your Opinions Please...

Am going to be repowering my 20ft cc in the next month or so, but have no idea what brand of outboard I should buy? Also what are people feelings on 2 vs 4 stroke motors on that size boat? I would like to buy a 150hp engine.

Thanks for your input...Abe's Rocket

This is the Pandora's Box thread.

Here's my $.02:

A great article in the current Powerboat Reports compared Yamaha 150 4 stroke to the new Honda 150 4 stroke. The edge went to Honda. Assumes the same price, better cruising MPG, slightly lower noise, but weighed 10 lb. more. A toss-up depending on your preference and dealer relationship. Can't lose either way.

Other choices include Suzuki 140 4 stroke, which can be purchased with Johnson armor, Yamaha HPDI or Evinrude Ficht 150 Direct injection 2 stoke. Naturally, Mercury has both a 2 stroke and 4 stroke (Yamaha) offering.

The choices are exciting. Personally? For me, in the Upstate/Western New York area, it's Honda or Evinrude. Unfortunately, Evinrude hasn't announced when they'll offer a 150 E-tec. Down south, probably Yamaha. I have a Merc 115 4 stroke that I love, but it's a Yamaha in black clothes.

Confused yet?

Judging by your handle you probably like to go fast so you may want to go with a 150-175 2 stroke on that 20 footer. If thats the case get then an Evinrude e-tech when they come out this Summer. The 2 stroke will weigh less then a comparable 4 stroke. However if it were me I'd go with the Suzuki 140 4 stroke as I hear they are a very well thought out engine. But then again speed is not a major concern for me.

haha...actually Abe is my dog. The "rocket" part is based on the fact that he likes to extend his love missle at the most inappropriate times.

but i still like to go fast. What type of performance do you get from the 140 suzuki 4-stroke? thanks.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

I'm sure Abe has quite the missle You will have to ask someone else about the 140... I dont have one however there are several on this board and a few on THT. Here is a recent link. http://thehulltruth.net/forums/threa...=28225&posts=7

I dearly love my Honda 130 on my 1999 20 FT. CC Classic, however, the Honda's weigh a ton and you wouldn't want to put an ounce more on the transom for fear of unbalancing the boat and not having it able to drain properly. She rides great in the Long Island Sound chop with the Honda "anvil", as she is stern heavy.
The 130 powers onto plane nicely, gets excellent fuel mileage, runs cleaner than the 2-strokes, but doesn't have the top end. I currently cruise at 25-28 MPH trimmed out and can push it up to 33-35 mph if it is glassy, but don't like to run it flat out for prolonged engine life and fuel consumption. ($2.95/gal. makes 26 mph a very livable speed...)

Rick,
I have the same motor, a 2002. Are you sure it's propped right? I get 42 MPH at 5800 RPM with a 15" pitch SS prop. Also, FWIW, you don't have to worry about pushing the motor since those 4 strokes actually only redline something like 12000 or 14000 RPMs (I forgot which, just knew that it was very high). The rev limiter is set at about 6500. Basically, you can't run it much past half of its capacity. That's the benefit of that heavy motor.

Most mechanics will tell you they are "unfamiliar" with the Yamaha engines, that tells me they don't need repairs as often, I have a 20cc with a 150 Mariner with over 1200 hours which will get replaced with a Yamaha 150 HDPI or a 4 stroke, if it ever goes south!

Re: Your Opinions Please...

I'll contnue where Otto left off.
Motor Weights
Honda BF 150 = 485lbs
Yamaha F 150 = 475lbs
Suzuki DF 140 = 421lbs
and it has a timming chain unstead of a timming belt.
I have 2 Suzy's waiting.

Mercury 250 offshore efi, 472 pounds....
On a 20', woooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh......
Probably a little too much, but the weight of these newer 4 strokes is mindboogling. Better have a really solid transom.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

what about the yamaha 130 2-stroke? It's only 367 pounds and it's fuel efficent for a 2 stroke. I don't think it's available anymore in 2004, but I've seen leftover models advertised for around $5500 - $6000. Probably won't have the resale value of the 140 suzuki or honda . . . but who cares if you are planning on keeping the boat for 10 more years.

Maybe Hammer or someone else can post some stats. Just looking at the 130's performance bullitens on yamaha's site for similar size/weight boats . . . . seems like it might be a decent pick.

my 20'CC had the Yami 130 on it before the refit and that engine could really push that boat right along

I'll endorse the Evinrude Ficht. I have a 2003 225hp with 325 hrs and I am very happy.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

I just placed a Yamaha 150 4 stoke on my old 76 20' CC Seacraft. It's heavier than the a typical 2 stoke, but the boat can handle it. I get great performance from the Yamaha. Fully loaded for fishing with 3 adults on board, I can top out at 38 mph, at cruising speed (25 mph) it burns 3 1/2 gals per hour. The 4 stoke Yamaha is the best engine I have ever had on this boat. Regards, Mike E

thank'n you

Abe's rocket...

ps...does anyone have $10,000 i can borrow?????

Bigshrimpin 07-05-2004 02:11 PM

are you sure about those numbers?

Mike E,
How are you measuring your burn . . . flow scan/navman?

25 / 3.5 = 7.14 miles per gallon @ cruise (3500 - 4000rpm) are you sure?

cSickNick 07-07-2004 11:39 AM

Re: are you sure about those numbers?

Yeah, if those Yami's are that good, i would trade my DF140 in.

Mine is in the ballpark of 5GPH @23mpg at 4K. - Nick

Re: Your Opinions Please...

Can't speak of the new motors but Back in '87 I put a 175 Yammy on my 1970 20' CC. It can top out at 52 MPH if and that's a big if the water is calm enough. At 50+mph it gets very light when the Long Island Sound isn't dead calm.

The Yammy has been trouble free in salt water since '87.
The 175 seems to dig much better then the 150's , I don't know why the extra horses make such a difference but they do. I am big on water skiing and the 175 will rip your arms out of their sockets if you jump on it.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

I repowerd my 20' Grady CC with an '02 2-stroke carbed Merc. 150 two seasons ago. This motor is phenomenal. While it certainly doesn't get the fuel economy of the 4-strokes, it's not inefficient by any means. Fully loaded, I'm pushing nearly 4000 lbs. through the water. WOT gives me almost 40 mph at 5400, but I try to cruise at 4000. This gets me about 28 mph and I'm burning 8 gal/hr per my Navman.

Like I said, it's not as efficient as a four stroke...but I paid less than $6500 for it. That included a new binnacle control, wiring harness and throttle and shift cables.

Just another option.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

hello
if you have the money to invest then go with a four stroke w/o a doubt! if not then go with a 2 stroke. rumor has it that 2 stroke have more torque?? maybe someone would like to add in one this one!

I have a Merc 225 Optimax 25" shaft and transom on a 71 20' custom built boat. I like the extra power to carry extra weight if you need to and you can cruise at lower RPM's to obtain good cruising speeds, also its fun to hall arse on a flat calm Biscayne Bay early in the morning.

Re: Your Opinions Please...

'72 Seafari. Currently running a '92 Merc 150 reman'd to roughly 200 hp. Fuel economy is not that good - nearly 9 gph at cruise, and over 14 at WOT. Normal top speed is about 48-49 Statute mph, but running downwind light on fuel in a moderate chop I once got up over 50....Woooohaaaa! Suck a 43 gal tank dry in no time!
If you're getting fuel economy of under 6 gph at cruise, Praise God!
I gotta wait a couple more years before I replace my hybrid 150/200 Merc. (Mostly '92 Xr4 150 - Intake, carbs and electricals from '02 200 carb motor)
