Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Hey guys- computer has been hosed for a while but I am back. Looking at getting rid of my swing back seat because my back is getting beyond repair. (Cant sit while running the boat, either at cruise etc.) Anyways not real sure what I want yet- I would like to still have storage (I keep life jackets in the seat now- but I definitely think I am going to make the switch. The only time I really like the seat is when we anchor up and chum but I figure I can work around that somehow. Also I think the lean post will buy me some more room !!! All suggestions appreciated - thanx- Craig

Craig
My cousin has one of these on his 24' Silverhawk! It's one of the best made Marine finish work I've seen. Very impressive http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung.../Fool/appl.gif--------> Birdsall |
Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Craig,
Check with Don Battin (aka Pipe Dreams). He built a post for my Grady and it's da' bomb. It was affordable too! |
Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Craig,
If you're looking to maintain storage, then I'd definitely go with something like the Birdsall that Chuck posted. My Seabird has a pedestal-mounted leaning post which I like a lot, but there's no storage underneath. Plus the pedestals don't allow for easy cooler storage either. One of these days I'll swap it out for a unit like the Birdsall. |
Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
I also had a post built by Don at pipedreamsmarine.com. It turned out great. I'll take some pictures and post them later tonight.

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Craig ....Had a post all written out about the fiberglass post Chuck posted ....That it would be tight with the "splash well" then it dawned on me you dont have that bath tub !!! That is an awesome leaning post !!!
Anyhow Bluewater makes a nice post (Contender) I think Seafari's is pretty awesome (think Ashley Welding (Regulator) built it) Here's a Tower Power post on a Silverhawk (very comfortable and is well built) Toms River NJ http://www.patmedia.net/scottfish21/towerpower.jpg Here's a Birdsall Post ..JeffH's.... I think it is also the "mini" like Pair of Jacks mentioned above http://www.patmedia.net/scottfish21/birdsall.jpg http://www.patmedia.net/scottfish21/birdsall2.jpg Sure Jeff has better pictures!! Rich ... Cant wait to see pictures of Don's post !!! |
Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Quality Marine Fabricators.com. I bought a leaning post from them last year, very nice, similar to the Birdsall for less dough.

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
I have the birdsall lean post with removeable back rest
folding foot rest.Best move youll ever make. birdsall also installed t top with mini tower on my 79 23 cc and converted it to a full transom w/ armstrong bracket. so one thing leads to the next. your l post will change your craft! , |
Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Thanx for the comments guys- I really like Jeffs, is that the standard/ original post?? Also curious about the width- guess I need to go check on my boat anyways (high-ass tide from Alex). Thinking 38" x 10 with lots of extra's. (mama gave me the ok . Still going to look around some more- sec , i couldnt find quality marine fabricators- need to do a google search - thanx again guys, i'm gettin friggin sick of hurricanes, I know my friends in hatteras are- they took a butt whippin again . Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
It always seemed dumb to me with those backrests that take uo 2 of your rod holders. Where would you store it on the boat if you needed to use the rodholders for rods?

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Nearly all makers use aluminum pipe and white vinyl but cleanliness of design varies widely. Hard to fault Birdsall.

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
The backrest is good when you have kids on board otherwise it's in the way and better left off the boat. Nice custom leaning post pics there.

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Hey Rich.. looks like you got everything you need to build a boat in there Thanks for posting the pictures

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Thanx for the pictures Rich, very nice ! ( if I might ask a question, looks like a couple extra inches of diamond plate between the back of the cushion and the rod holders- any special purpose for that??? Just curious- Also was thinking about a back rest- Ive had 3 surgeries so I need some support later on in the afternoon sometimes where I could maybe hop up, lean back and run the boat- I know it is a leaning post but do any of y'all actually run your boats "sitting" on the cushion ??? Sorry for all the questions but hey, inquiring minds want to know!!!

Re: Recommendations for a new leaning post ???
Most leaning posts if they have a flip top have a small tray. If you want a 8" tray you need to get a custom cushion made, $$$ so In trying to keep the prices down I use the standard cuchion with the 8" tray. The extra plate you see serve two functions.. 1 to make up the extra space that is not covered by the cushion. 2 adds some strenght to the cushion.. and a little blingbling factor too... you can sit on my leaning posts and run the boat with the back rest in. GW204 has the same post Rich does with the removable back rest. .and his wife sits there all the time...Brian.. pictures please....
