Making progress, feeling stupid...
After putting the 23CC project on the shelf for 18 months, I finally get the boat out after prodding from several members. You know who you are... We had painted the hull and wet sanded down to 800.
So I'm rubbing out the hull and it's looking sweet. I can see the second hand on my watch. As I get to mid-ships, I discover, much to my dismay, that we had wet sanded through the paint is several areas and the primer was starting to show through. Stop buffer. Drink beer. Make calls. So it turns out that the Interlux "Brightsides" one part polyurethane, that was the sweetheart of paint in many peoples minds 18 months ago, have now changed their tunes. "I could have told you that was "shi* paint and not to use it." "Dude, I asked you 18 months ago and it's what you recommended!" Whatever. Now I know. Maybe this is a good lesson. I have always trusted the repairs and gelcoat work on our big boats to Great Lakes Yacht Works in Sodus Point, New York. So, with my tail between my legs I towed her down there and pleaded my stupidity. Of course, they HAD "told me so", but I didn't want to spend the "big" money for a paint job. Bill was very understanding (he still laughed)and made me a very reasonable package deal to re-shoot the hull sides (Imron dark blue) and bottom (Interlux VC Performance white)(turning her over) and installing the new Taco rub rail. I'll let you guys determine the moral of the story, but in retrospect, I would still do the prep work. But painting (or gel coating) is what you see at the end forever and is really the part your project is judged on most. See'll be done in a couple weeks and I'm looking forward to finishing her up. Humbley submitted, |
Re: Making progress, feeling stupid...
I shoot photos of people on tropical beaches for advertising to earn a living. I took my boat project to someone that resurrects boats for a living.
You did far better that I would have with a boat project and merely sanding too far down is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things. You done good, don't get too down about it |

Re: Making progress, feeling stupid...
Otto-
Sorry to hear about your wet sanding nightmare. Don't know much about the Interlux paint but I have wet sanded many boats and I can see how it could happen although I have never done it myself...my buddy would have killed me I did. Anyway...glad to see that the restoration is back on track. I am sure you will be happy once again when you get her back from the yacht painter. Keep on chugging... Ed |

I hadn't thought about the hit to the beverage fund
Wow, now I see the whole picture. Very very sorry to hear about that Otto. Maybe we could all chip in to Otto's beer fund?? |
Re: Making progress, feeling better
I can't take credit for this Imron paintwork and Taco rubrail installation. I took Mark's advice (thanks)and did my food machinery thing while Great Lakes Yacht Works in Sodus Point, NY did their thing. Tom (Salty Dog) and I put scores of hours into the preporation, but these guys made us look good.
http://www.foodmachinery.com/Boats/DSC02372.JPG The bottom has 1-1/2 gallon of Interlux VC-17 bottom paint. http://www.foodmachinery.com/Boats/DSC02379.JPG The rubrail is from Taco and has the 1" stainless steel insert. Althought the cap doesn't sit even up near the bow, black 4200 filled the gap nicely and discretely. http://www.foodmachinery.com/Boats/DSC02381.JPG http://www.foodmachinery.com/Boats/DSC02378.JPG I'm on to the interior and console next... Happy New Year! |

She looks great. Those guys did a real nice job. I love that rubrail...thinking of putting one on my Mako in the spring. Strick- let us know if you cant find that bottom paint.I am sure one of us out here could ship it to you. Ed |

Re: Making progress, feeling better
Hey Ed, I think your in driving distance to
Barbour Plasics. They make a very nice rigid rail (1090-R) with the 1" stainless insert. Strick - Wheres the link to the new Pettit Paints??? Rodney |

Re: Making progress, feeling stupid...
Finster,
I haven't really been paying attention to the 20's nor have I seen many pictures posted lately, I'm sure there are quite a few nice ones out there |
Re: Making progress, feeling stupid...
Thanks for the comments. I went to the 2002 Atlantic City Boat show and made notes of all of the features of the new 23 Classic and was determined to do my best to duplicate it, but with my choice of power and electronics. So far so good.
I appreciate the continued support. |
Re: Making progress, feeling better
Otto ...they did do a nice job on that hull ... betcha feeling good about it now !!
Question about the VC ... Did they go with that since your keepin her on the trailer and instead of putting Imron on the bottom?? thats not a commonly used "antifouling" paint around here (I believe sailboats use it for racing bottoms).... Quote:
Hammer's ... I think made us all drool Mark's ... Just the teaser pics put some of us over the edge .... Hope to see it this spring Trayders ... I remember a "burban" full of us going to look at it as Scott(Viking marine) was riggin up the engine ... The boat wasnt even finished and there was SeaCraft envy !! George ...Paint looks real good !!…hmmm that’s four |
Re: Making progress, feeling better
Scott,
Thanks. Tom and I had originally put on the VC-17 due to it's fresh water anti-fouling ability, contains Teflon so the boat will go "really fast" and is white, which is the look I wanted. Although intended as a trailer boat, It gives me the option of leaving her in the the water for a week at a time and still have easy clean up. We'll see about that... |
Re: Making progress, feeling better
Hey Otto.. How are you going to get that nasty looking blemish out of the side? Seeing that you paid to have someone do the work, I'd stop payment till they fix it. It's a shame. .boat looks great other then that blemish...
|
Re: Making progress, feeling better
Otto ... Sounds like it will work perfect for your application . Thats probably a great choice for the rigors of on and off a trailer too ...
I bet when you do let her sit in the water for a bit any slime would wash right off since its got the Teflon in it. I see it is recommended for the lakes or areas of low fouling …again looks like a good alternative to a re-gel coat job. One of the restorers in the area did spray the bilge of a 23 with it … Don’t remember why he used that over some of the other stuff out there …. Looked real nice …got fancy and fleck coated it Is the final VC finish on your boat high gloss ?? |
Re: Color Code Please
Otto:
The paint job looks great. It looks about the shade of blue that was at one time many years ago on my 20. Would you mind giving up the paint type & code? |
Re: Making progress, feeling better
you are correct about the VC-17 on sailboats...
|
Re: Making progress, feeling better
Scott,
The final finish on the white VC-17 is more of a semi-gloss. It will finish better, but it's so hard that you'd have to work REALLY hard. |
