Pilothouse

Does anyone know of a builder of pilothouses like this one on a 20' Shamrock? Considering replacing the center console with one. I'll be inquiring to both Shamrock and Maratime Skiff to see if they will sell just the house.

Any comments on installing one on a 23'?

You could try Eastern boats or some of the other down east co.s. I seem to think I have seen this on a couple of diff. models up this way. It does look like it would be pretty slick on your boat. Scotty.

A Classic Potter SeaCraft owner without a Classic Potter Pilot House http://www.click-smilies.de/sammlung...e/MrT_anim.gif

Seamark Pilot House I'm pretty sure they make a smaller version for the 8' beam boats..

The one pictured needs something....not exactly sure what, maybe window treatment of some sort?

I bet the stereo would sound better inside one of those though

Re: Pilothouse

The 1st Shamrock I ever saw with a piolethouse like that was a 26ftr. I saw it here in Pensacola,fl. They towed it with a Big 'Ol station wagon. I was told that it was Shamrock's 1st piolethouse. This was many years ago.

The potter Pilothouse is kinda weird with the helm to port.

I know from experiance that when you squeeze the width of a pilothouse it incroches [sp?] on the size of the helm area. you have to do some real juggling in order to get all of your guages, electronic's in that small area.
Most company's will mount the helm on the vertical panel. This free's up space at the helm, but I don't like the way the steering wheel feals. I want it mounted like a sports car and this is what creates the problems, but it feels better in your hands.

Re: Pilothouse

Capt. Chuck,

I asked Don (Hermco) a couple of times if they were interested in building a pilothouse for a 23. Currently they only offer one for boats with a 10' beam. I don't care for the look of that one. Osprey has a nice one too on their 22':

Or Strick could build me one...

Re: Pilothouse

Otto - I got on a maritime skiff 23' w/ the pilot house at the Boston Boat show a little over a year ago. I really liked the functional design. It's not as confining as the shamrock or the osprey. The sides and the back are all removable canvas sections.

A pilothouse built like this one, could easily be built with Nidacore.

This one is built with Nidacore. It's a wheelhouse that goes on top of a charterboat. I watched it being built.

Re: Pilothouse

Just an observation from time that I have spent on a handful of SeaCraft 23's - if the pilothouse is ANY wider than the existing console, it will mean for a very tight squeeze when walking by it on the outside. In addition, if you keep it to the width of the typical SC23 console, there won't be very much space on the inside for more than one person.

ScottM 11-28-2004 04:47 PM

Re: Pilothouse

Otto,
I agree with Mark on the width issue. Check out Steve Sylver's pilot house (if you haven't already). This may be all you can do with a 23. Lots of Cape Cod commercial guys running SC 23's have a pilot house like this.

NoankBill is a semi-retired boat builder and has a great pilothouse/cuddy setup on his custom made seacraft. Might be worth talking to him about this project. I agree with warthog . . . nidacore would be a perfect core material for this project.

Re: Pilothouse

Otto - You're reading my mind, man!I like that pilothouse on the Maritime skiff, so much that I e-mailed them. The owner Paul, is a helluva nice guy he's been bouncing some ideas off me.The Patriot pilothouse is a pretty pricey option, as is and all finished.
If you look at the Voyager option, he's talking about selling me the rough "plug" which would be the console base forward of the door opening up to the top of the windshield rail.I would just have to fab the top, and paint it and mount the glass, fab the dash/box, etc. It's an interesting idea.I'll have to get the dimensions of the footprint though.I'm concerned about the width and the length. Make for a nice winter project, though. But, I have to get the bottom done before anything else

Here's a pic of the house and console. Excuse the grunge as these pics were taken the day the cover came off this spring.

NoankBill Do you just use that front section to hold your anchor line?

Re: Pilothouse

I think that's the head. So when you're bouncing around in a little sea you don't need to pee on your baits and "taint" them...

Nice Doghouse!

Re: Pilothouse

Bill,

Thanks for the images. I understand the size constraint issues of the 23. Although I'm still waiting for some quotes for stock and custom wheelhouses, I think I'll also price out Isenglass on 3 sides with sides capable of being used as "wings" (swing out the side curtains and attach to the inside of the gunnels to reduce spray while under way. I've seen it done with EZ2CY, a heavy, not-very-flexible, but very expensive clear plastic.

With a hardtop installed, there's this approach too:

Re: Pilothouse

Actually guys, that hatch leads to an area large enough to sleep 2 people. Yes the offshore anchor stores down below along with the engines oil tank, third battery for the winch, 6 rods, all safety gear and med kit, life jackets and fishing tackle not in imediate use. Notice the raised foredeck, that's how we made the extra room down below.

Re: Pilothouse

Hey Otto

Did you get a real quote on EZ2CY?? I did on just a front panel and YIKES !!!! I dont think I would do the whole thing that way ..... Maybe splurge for the front but go with Strataglass (even for the front panel) or even the regular vinyl for the sides and back...If you want to get a wing out of the way while out on the boat that EZ2CY will present problems for ya

We had Strata on the big boats …and it was crystal clear …however it never came down or was never rolled up …so I don’t know how that affects it
I’m pretty sure Miles is using Stratglass and likes it a lot

ScottM 12-02-2004 04:23 PM

Re: Pilothouse

A buddy of mine has the wing panels on his Silverhawk made out of vinyl and they work really well. Most of the time they are rolled up and stored under the console, but when you do put them up, they are clear enough to see through pretty well.

Re: Pilothouse

I have the exact pilot house on my 1969, 27'. The pilot house is awesome, It was definately from a Shamrock, but they no longer make it according to the Shamrock dealer. The Pilot House is Awesome, and I bought it on the side of the road for 400 bucks. It fits great on a 27, and I think it will be a little tight on the 23, but not bad. The guy I bought it from said it came off of a 20' Shamrock.

Good Luck

Kernel - welcome to the site. Do you happen to have pictures of a 1969 27? I was under the impression that the only 27-foot SC made back then was a flybridge until they introduced the 27 CC in the late 70s/early 80s.

Here's another pilot house. I'm not wild about the rear entry , but that design offers lots of protection from the elements.
