18 repowering ideas
I am looking at a suzuki 140 but might consider a suzuki 115. Does anybody have the preformance numbers on this boat with the 140 or 115. What shaft motor does that hull call for and am I gona have problems with the weight.

Re: 18 repowering ideas

Re: 18 repowering ideas
If this helps- I have a SC 18 -78. Motor history-78-90- 115 Evinrude. 91-present-115 mariner. Both pushed the boat well. For me weight is a factor as I use the live well and this makes it stern heavy to say the least. Also the current price of fuel makes the 4 strokes attractive, but again its weight factor again.. I think the 4 strike Suzuki and the Yam 115s are worth looking at... you do lose speed performance, but I am mostly nearshore fishing and speed is not the main factor for me. Good luck-JS

Re: 18 repowering ideas
yamaha 4strk 115 hands down best choice!! 2nd choice is a
bombardier e-tech 115 either choice 4strk wont be as fast as far as fuel goes they're gonna be very close. maintenance factor e-tech none for 3 yrs. i would go with either of those 2 |
Re: 18 repowering ideas
I had a 1985 140 suzuki (2 stroke) when I bought in 96. It ran right at 38-40, top end. Repowered with a 130 Johnson V4, top end right at 43, cruise @ 30 mph/4200 rpm. I agree weight is a huge factor especially if you use the livewell in the floor. My 130 weights about 380 lbs. it is not to heavy. I sealed my well off in the floor and use it as positive flotation and added a transom mounted livewell on the back, works great! Several guys on the site have those 4 stroke 140's and they appear to not be tail heavy. If you need any pic's, email me.

Re: 18 repowering ideas
Hey Ark, just droped my 18SC off and the shop to have the DF140 installed. I'll let you know some numbers when i get it back prob in a cpl of weeks. Im not really worried about the top end, i was more concerned about the motor haveing enough ass to get it out of the hole. From what ive read and heard i think it should be just fine, not including the gas milage i will get going from a 1992 evinrude 175hp carbed. As far as the weight my 175 i think weighs close to 400lbs, witch i get my feet wet with a cpl of guys in the back of the boat. The df140 is at 419lbs hopefuly it shouldnt make to much diffrence.

Re: 18 repowering ideas
The DF140 (410#s) is actually lighter weight than the DF115 (416#s).
Weight IS a factor with the SC18 and SC20, both are tail heavy boats and I've owned one of each. One member on here from the Virgin Islands has a 140 on his 18' and speaks very highly of the setup, it was one factor that helped me decide to put the 140 on my 20' (which isn't that much different than the 18' in either length or weight). let us know what you decide. |
Re: 18 repowering ideas
Can someone confirm that there is going to be a DF 175 coming out soon?
|
Re: 18 repowering ideas
abe - This was announced at the miami boat show.
There will be a 150 and 175 coming out this fall. |
Re: 18 repowering ideas
The DF 150 & 175 are supposed to be in the 515 - 540 lb range depebding on shaft length, according to an exec at Pro Line in Homosassa, FL. Pro Line is considering adding Suzuki to their available pre-rigs. Mercury is objecting. Pro Line currently pre-rigs Merc & Yam. They will also rig Evinrude on a special order if YOU supply all the necessaries.

Re: 18 repowering ideas
Frank - I've heard from a suzuki dealer that the engines will be around 450lbs. There big inline 4 cylinder engines . . . similar to the yamaha 150 (only more cubic inches).
----------------------------------------------------------- This was posted on the florida sportmans site. the suzuki 150/175 will be a 2.9L inline 4 wieght 450-475 swinging a 16" prop. (lower unit is for there big brother V6's) will be out in October. |

Re: 18 repowering ideas
I have a 1985 seacraft SF18 with a 87 115 merc and a 25" orig tansom. Turning a 17 inch pitch prop, top speed is around 38. cruise is around 27/28 mph. the motor wgt. is 316 lbs. The 115 is in excellant cond. but I want to repower to gain some mph. I've looked at the four strokers also and found them to be alot heavier and slower than the 2 strokers. I think a 140 sukie is in the 500 lb.which could be a bit on the heavy side for an 18 which was rated for a 150 before 4 strokers were around, but as someone said you can plug your drains and be ok. I'm presently looking at a 150 merc 2 stroke which weighs in at 415 lbs. Turning a 19 inch pitch prop the speed should be near 48 or 49 mph I think. Anybody running a 150 merc on an 18SF with some numbers? and can you raise the motor some on the transom? Butch

Re: 18 repowering ideas
Butch- A 130 Yam 2 stroke is a great little motor
for that boat. Only 360lbs and plenty of power. Plenty of deals on them if you look around. Rodney |
Re: 18 repowering ideas
So does a 1985 18 have a 20 or a 25 original transom. I have read that it has both, or does different years have different transom heights.

Re: 18 repowering ideas
My 18 has a 25 inch transom (orig,) which I thought they all were but I was wrong. Not any other 18 's around here that I know of. Only two 23 ft. cuddy's and one 20 ft. cuddy. Don't know if they were one size one year and then changed for a different model year or mixed during any model year. Good question. Butch

Re: 18 repowering ideas
Hey Ark, just got mine back from having the 140 installed and ran it this weekend. As far as the weight i couldnt tell the diffrence between the zuki and the old 175hp evinrude. They put a 14x18 SS prop on. It gets out of the hole just fine, the cruise speed is about 28mph at about 4300rpm burning about 6gph. Not sure what the top end is yet, waiting to break it in a little more to open it up and find out if the correct prop is on it. So far im very pleased with it. Its super quiet and sips gas espicialy at trolling speeds.
