Suzuki 140 - Seacraft 20 - MPG @ Cruise

Guys with a 140 suzuki:
I'm trying to get a good understanding of the fuel burn for 140 @ cruise on a seacraft 20. Suzuki's website lists very different stats for very similar boats. I'm hoping that you guys set the record straight and post your stats.

At 4000rpm, I'm going 26mph and burning 5 gph in a 1971 SC20 w/full 75 gallon tank, two adults on board, t-top, and full cooler I'm falling shy of the mark these charts are getting at the top end.

The three charts listed here only vary by 4mph at the top end, which I think is actually pretty close considering they are three different hulls and fuel capacities. At 4000rpm, the variance is once again within 5mph for three different boats. If 5mph is going to make or break that engine for you, I suggest buying a bigger engine?

Mark,
Any idea what your 20 weighs now? That could be the speed difference right there.

I'd be willing to bet, that none of those boat's tested have a T-top on them.

I really haven't weighed it but if anything it weighs more now than before. Also, I have more fuel than any of the boats listed, AND, they state their tests were done with 90% full tanks, mine was topped off with 75 gallons for those figures and had several people on board, fishing gear, a cooler stuffed with ice/drinks, etc. The fact that they get another couple of miles per hour doesn't much concern me - it's a fishing boat, not a performance boat.

Unlike some of the restorations and redo's on here, none of mine was done with the various composite materials that lighten up these new boats.

If I have to evacuate for another hurricane this year....and decided to pull the boat along, I plan on stopping into a truck stop and getting it weighed just out of curiousity

Thanks Mark . . . I was just curious about the fuel burn. Top end isn't a huge concern.

looks like those three charts, in addition to my situation, are all running somewhere between 5-6.6 GPH at 4000rpm. The thing I find odd is the boat burning 6.6 GPH at 4000rmp to go 26mph when I am right at 5.0 GPH on the Flo-Scan unit for the same speed and RPM. I figured my boat was about as tail heavy and deep V'd as any 19'6" boat out there...

BigShrimpdog-

I am chiming in as I have the 20 with the 4s 140 as well but I can not help as I have never had a fuel flow meter.

I can tell you I rarely fill the tank

Hows that for useless info

Trayder's boat is so light with all that Nidacore that it probably could run indefinitely on fumes

Trayder's boat is so light that even with Capt Chuck's fat azz on board last October, we still managed to make good time over to the Elizabeths!!

Jason - I tell you what, you invite me on a couple tuna trips this season aboard Thunder Pig and I'll let you keep the tuna as fuel compensation, okay? Who knows, maybe the trip(s) will be so sucessful that we can dub it the "Tuna Pig".

Mark/Jason,

What prop are you guys using?

My little brother just had a Suzuki 140 installed on a 19' Grady White Tournament and ran 21/22 mph at 4000 w/ a 14 x17 3-blade Aluminum. He hasn't yet had a chance to run it wide open to see if he can hit the upper end of the recommended range.
