21' 1962 restoration
This is the boat that i got from botapeje (nestor) that he got from cliff. yesterday and today i started ripping it apart and now i have about an acres worth of mulch if anyone is interested. but seriously, the stuff that was built right was a bitch to get out, but the rest just fell out. the center stringer seems fine since it was done right, but the other 4 need rehab.
Mark - id like to talk to you about how widened the gunnels on your boat. im going to do the same and have some ideas but just wanna get other opinions trayder - im sure this project will generate allot of interest, maybe you want to make it sticky and ill update it once a week? |

Re: 21' 1962 restoration
yea i figured id get allot of the "keep it origional" comments, but TOO LATE! today i cut of the gunnels where i comes up all the way around for the center console transformation, and im using a teak consol pod out of a merrit so it should be something else when its done

Re: 21' 1962 restoration
As a racer in the photos it has a center console, so it shouldn't that bad. But don't forget the racing graphics!

Re: 21' 1962 restoration
It makes no differance what I or anyone else thinks about the changes you do to that boat, it's your boat. I can tell however, that modifying a one of a kind boat like that one just devalued it out of the realm of classic or antique. And is there for just another boat.

Re: 21' 1962 restoration
allright, so shes pretty much gutted! now for the questions
1. since i need to replace all the stringers, should i do them one at a time (take one out and replace it) or rip em all out and do em all. trayder id like you to respond to this one cause i believe you took yours out completly. 2. i plan on raising the deck 2-3 inches, thus making the stringers 2-3 inches taller, the outer most ones will not be a problem because the glass is still intact so i can copy the shape and add the inces to the top. however, the inner ones are way to far gone and they will have to be made from scracth, so what is the trick to insuring they will sit properly and the deck will be level. 3. can you guys measure your consoles for me, LxWxH, and lemme know what looks good, and yes i am a fan of bigger consoles 4. fuel tanks - i looked at some today at a savalge place and can get them for 3 dollars a gallon, they had an 80, 100, and 134 gallon, the 100 and 134 would be really tricky to fit in, so will 80 gallons be enough? (i would love to get away with only $240 on a fuel tank Thats all for now! Ben |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
Ben,You hack away and build you a little "MERRITT"! As you can tell if you saw my skiff pics that Mark posted I am a big fan of teak helm pods and toe rails. In my opinion there should be a little Roy Merritt in every boat!

Re: 21' 1962 restoration
Hello Ben-
I ripped all of mine out at the same time and I would suggest you do the same. The one thing that is imperative is that you block the boat and make sure she is straight and stays straight while you replace the stringers. I also laid in some more glass in areas while the stringers were out, not having the stringers in place helped out in laying new glass To make the outer stringers m,ake a template and do your best, bonding putty may become your best friend. I have the Marine Conection center console in my 20 I only have a 45 gal tank but with the 140 4stroke I have never needed anything larger. |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
joey - i second that, this consol belongs in a museum, i scored it for $250 but a friend who makes them for a living said it has over $500 worth of teak alone... ill get a pic up soon
trayder - so doing it on the trailer is a no-no? ive blocked a boat before but it would be soo much easier as it sits and my feeling is that any shape it would have lost is gone by now since the stringers are [censored] anyways, any truth behind this theory? |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
As long as the triailer provides good and even support it should be fine. Just do not move the boat around after you take the stringers out.
As for the boat being messed up because the stringers are already shot.....hmmm possibly but as you said before the inner 2 are OK so I think you should be fine, how does it look to the eye? |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
I would recommend that you do them one at a time to try and keep some shape in it. I think I understood you to say you have cut the cap already? I haven't seen any pix's yet.
This thing could become a real wet noodle. |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
Ben, I just went through this also. Keeping the boat on the trailer is not the best way to do this. When the boat is in the water it settles different than when on the trailer. The trailer will have different pressure points than blocking it.
Trayder is on the money with making sure the boat is straight. Mine had an inch and a half corkscrew in it when I started. I put a 75 gallon tank in my 20' with a 200 and I have plenty of gas for the day. |
Re: 21' 1962 restoration
Ben,
Congratulations on the score of the 21'. I would still be willing to lend a hand on the retrofit. Got a family so maybe one evening a week? let me know. I know a little of eletrical and electronics. Terry |
