1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

Well My baby is going up for sale to make room for the next project. I am going to miss this one and hope that someone is looking for a new boat.

1970 Potter Built 20' Openfisherman
1985 150hp merc with low hours
galvanized roller trailer in great shape

Here is what was done over this past winter:
Awlgrip fighting lady yellow hull and snow white cockpit. Transom skinned, new plywood, and glassed with epoxy. New style self bailing decks with TH Marine ping pong ball scuppers. All new teak hatches and combings. ($1000 in wood!)New teleflex no feedback helm and cable. All new deck hardware in stainless. new running lights. boat totally rewired from scratch. new binnacle control box. New shift and throttle cables. New guages. New 1000ca battery in new battery tray. New custom leaning post with flip up seat, folding footrest, rocket launchers, backrest, and pleated white cushions. New fuel lines and filter. New taco rub rail with black insert. pop up cleat with rub strakes. TH marine cable cover for that clean look to the outboard. new water pump in the outboard. New bilge pump. I know I am missing a ton of stuff, but You will see everything in the pictures when I get them on here.

The boat does 42 on GPS with just me in the boat and 39 and change with four people. This is a real attention getter and I can't tell you how many times I have been asked who did all the work. The best part is.....My father and I did this together. I have all the pictures of the whole project if you would like to see the boat at any stage.

Our asking price is $12,000 for boat motor and trailer. the boat is located on Long Island on the south shore. I have not posted it on Ebay yet, but I will in 2 or 3 days.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter

I tried to get to see the boat today. I must have driven by your block a dozen times between 2 and 6 this afternoon. When i finally had time to check the boat out the sun was going down and I needed to get home and feed the family. I'll try to see the boat this weekend if possible. Luckily the bass are best at night and i cant sleep more than 3-4 hours a night.

here is one picture of the boat. It is a crappy picture because we haven't had a sunny day in a while. It really doesn't do the boat any justice. I figured it was better than nothing!

Tom,
I'll be around most of the weekend if you want to stop by. Just give my cell a call so I can make sure I am around. I will probably be working on my 23 in the shop. I'll be over at the beach on saturday afternoon from about 3pm on.

Andrew,
Just my opinion, but you're asking a decent amount of money for a boat that has a 20 year old motor and no electronics (at least you don't have any listed). Granted, you've done plenty of restoration, but the buyer is essentially getting a hull and trailer for their money.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter

I know I am asking a lot of money for this boat, but it is really worth the extra couple of dollars. What do you guys think it is worth? I will put some pics on tonight.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter

I wanted to clear up one point I made in my ad. When I mentioned my father and I redoing this boat together this winter, I forgot to add that I was a professional boatbuilder for 10 years before becoming a teacher. Actually, my family has been involved in boat restorations for 3 generations including me. This boat was done right and was not a "backyard special". Hope that helps!

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter

Alright guys....Someone make me an offer......as long as it is reasonable we can work from there. I would like to sell this thing so I can dump the money into my 23' project. Someone is going to end up with a great boat here.

Here are some pictures of the boat out of the water in the driveway. I'm hoping to get some pics of her in the water one day this week. Finally, somewhat of a sunny day to take some pics. The paint looks a lot better when it has sun reflecting off the water. Hopefully, I'll get to take some pictures to show you guys.

Did you replace the gas tank? If so - what size? Did you replace the whole deck? Did you raise the transome any? Any idea about how many hours are on the motor? Had an engine survey? What are the compression numbers? Do you think the trailer could make a long trip? Can't quite tell from the pictures - is the bottom painted w/bottom paint or black awlgrip?

How did you get the teak to look so nice???

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

The engine is very strong. All of the cylinders were within a couple of pounds of the target number, but I forget what number that is. I believe it was 125psi, but I'll check the book tomorrow. We have owned the engine the whole time and have had zero problems with it for ten+ years. I replaced the return lines and rebuilt the carbs this season. I also replaced the water pump, housing, and seals about a week ago. The trailer made it from my house to Norfolk, Va without a problem at all. It has new bearing buddies and new light kit. The brake lines need to be replaced and then the brakes would work. I have never had any luck with brakes on my trailers. The gas tank is under the console and is 26 or 28 gallons I believe. The boat had the same tank in it when we bought it so we just upgraded to a poly tank as opposed to the metal one that it came with. I ran the boat today to the inlet to do some bass fishing and I only burned about 1/3 of a tank. I forgot the gps on the charger or else I would have a distance for you. The inlet is about a 20 minute ride from where I put the boat in. The bottom paint is black antifouling paint.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

I forgot to add that the trailer has almost no rust and all the rollers are in great shape. It was actually for my 23', but I bout a new aluminum trailer for that. The trailer is actually overkill if that is possible.

The transom was raised before I did the restoration and I just redid their sloppy work. The plywood comes all the way to the top now and is all tied in as one solid piece as opposed to adding onto the top of an existing transom.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

The teak was all new and I hand picked all the pieces. I used teak oil on them, but did 2 coats or so. I apply it, wipe it with a rag, and then apply again. It really brings it out.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

Don't see any place on boat to tie docking lines? Did you replace the whole deck? Since you raised the transome - required shaft length for motor? Hull solid or did you have to fix that anywhere (other than transome)? What brought you down to Orf - I am in Newport News?

flash14 07-21-2005 11:07 AM

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

I did not replace the decks. The top cap was solid and the cockpit is solid as well. I installed a flush mount pop up cleat with rub strakes in the bow and I use the stern rings to clip a stern line on to. I saw no need for stern cleats. I do not keep the boat in the water so I did not put in cleats any where I did not need to.

I drove down there to buy my 23' from a guy back in October or November. We are down there a couple of times a year. We have friends that live in Smithsfield that we visit.

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

I forgot to add that I have a compass and a bottom machine (transom mount transducer) for the boat that were not installed yet. I just can't bring myself to cut anymore holes in my paint job! I have tons of parts that came off the boat including a windshield that also go with the boat. I have another lower unit and trim assembly, bow rails, steering wheel, etc...

Re: 1970 20' for sale......total refit this winter!!!!

I appreciate the positive comments guys. The new price for the whole package is $10,000. If I go any lower, the boat isn't worth selling. I figured out all of the costs and it came out very close to that without even factoring in our time. I just rebuilt the carbs and this things runs like a clock. I am going to check WOT speed again because I may have picked up some.

Someone give this man a truck to borrow! Just kidding....I'm in no rush to sell it. There is still a lot of great fishing to be done this season and I don't have my 23' ready for the water yet. I have been getting offers so I know the boat is going to sell sooner or later.

Used the boat this morning. SW @ 20kts with steep breaking chop and I didn't get a drop on me! I wish I could keep this thing. The feeling of how well this boat goes in those conditions is something you don't feel on any other boat its size. It feels great when you hit it and the boat just takes off and blasts through that stuff. I wish I were a trust fund baby.........
