Transom Dust....
I finally got time to work on the vette today, and as it turns out, this is one of the easiest transoms I've done! I just fell out. The accual wood had turned to potting soil so it made the job quite easy.

Wow .... Its no wonder that big old Black Max bounced around back there. I don't think the now infamous security chain would have done much in keeping the motor attached to the boat. I can see now that I took my life in my own hands when cruising on that craft ... And you call yourself Captain !!!!

anyway it's amazing how strong fiberglass is...it can keep everything together enough to go boating even when the transome is dust [img]/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] strick |

Does the Seavette have a livewell under the motor well?
If not, how did they reinforce the transom from inside? I am interested as I just removed the livewell in the process of replacing the transom. I would be interested to know how Seacraft stiffened the transom without the livewell. In the process of removing the transom livewell (challenging!)it occured to me that they used the livewell to stiffen the transom. I have some very custom welded 1/4" aluminum reinforcing that lined the livewell and stiffened up the transom due to rotted wood. A pic of the inside of the seavette transom would be interesting Thanks |
Finster - any more progress - pix ?
I'm curious, as I just started this project on my 20' seafari - but no potting soil, just a wet transom.
My biggest hurdle at the moment is digging the wood out of the trough at the bottom of the transom - any suggestions ? thanks Bill |

Ya ever see so many hole's in a transom? I got her all cleaned out and justa'bout ready for new.
Stony, I'll get a pic of the inside in a little bit. Oldbluesplayer, try using two claw hammers. Hit the claw in and try prying up. It worked pretty well for me. I cut and cleaned this whole transom in about 5 hrs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...l/DSCN1964.jpg |

went with the drill, and hammer and chisel route, took me a couple hours to clean out the bottom pocket.
You got a ton o' holes there - was there a plate bolted on? Are you going to add a layer of glass to the inner transom, before or during the transom replace ? Looks like you left the original drain tube in place - planning on leaving that in thru the transom replace, or just haven't pulled it out yet ? If leaving it in, did you leave any wood around it ? Mine looks just about like yours at this stage. Bill |

No all the threw hulls are out. And yes I'll put a few layers of glass on the inside and layer up 3/8 ply with a couple layers of matt in between each sheet.

Looking close at that pic, I'm surprised how flat the inner transom is, given the wood condition -
my soggy transom resulted in some serious glass deformation at the lower engine bolt hole - they must have re-tightened the engine mount bolts every year, and put a squish into it. The upper holes aren't bad, but they were reinforced by the added thickness of the splashwell. Looks like I'm gong to have to reinforce the lower bolt hole area, and then level the inner transom, before I can go into new transom layup. speaking of layups - you mentioned 3/8" ply ? What's your layup schedule going to be? cruising thru past threads, I've seen 1/4 luan, 3x 1/2 and 2x 3/4 ply - how much cured thickness do you get out of the glass layer your putting in there ? thanks Bill |

You can really put in any conbination you want. The fact is, if you take mesurements around the cut, you'll find that it flucuates +- 3/16".

I did mine from the inside. I had over 50 holes in the transonm. The boat was originally dual outbourds. I had to do the deck cap also.

Looking at your pictures it appears your gas fill was on the starboard side. That's the first one I have seen [img]/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] What year is your hull? |

The boat is registered as a 1971. The nameplate is embossed aluminum piece on the glovebox lid that is illegible.
Someone did some very poor quality repairs, and one of them was to move the gas fill to the starbord side. They repaired the fiberglass hole in the deck cap and other broken spots on the deck cap with automobile body putty and window screening. I did replace the deck fill with a GEM product, which I believe you recommended and I am pleased thanks. |

The splashwell is put together the same as mine which would make it a '72. This is also suppose to be the first year production of the 23' CC.
