Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Oh wise ones
New to the seacraft world and would appreciate any advice you could give me concerning the purchase of a 87 23' cc no motors. Trailer is included. The boat was left unattended bilge pumps failed (dead batteries) and she eventually rolled over.Owner says its been rewired but thats it. Had twin 200hp's. Asking price 7500.00. What do you think? Probably have it surveyed |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Sounds like a project!!!
Where is the boat located? How do the deck & transom look and feel? Does it need to be painted? |

Going to look at it this afternoon . I briefly scoped it out this past spring in a downpour when he was asking 11,000 for it , looked solid and paint wasn't bad. Boat is located in southern Maine, don't see many around here. |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Maineman,
Compare it against this boat web page The hermco bracket alone is worth several thousand. Good luck. Is the transom on the boat that you are looking at open or closed? |

The transom is open with what looks like apiece of solid aluminum on both sides . Just got back with some pics will post when I figure out how. Hull is in real good shape just a little faded. |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Maineman,
If you post the pictures up (here is one web site where you can post pictures for free) web page there are some excellent people on the CSC web site who can give you excellent feedback. |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
More often than not, you don't have to put alum. on a good transom ? and being in the salvage bussines if the boat rolled or sank you might be looking at weld probs in the fuel cell, corrosion on the welds and so forth if its a alum. tank . so if you want a project go a head if you get the boat for a deal. you might want to think about getting a moisture test on the boat to know about the transom and stringers. good luck

Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Moisture test will be done when the boat is surveyed this week .Thanks for your help.Price now at 7000.00 could go lower depending on survey results.

Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Maine,
I have an 87' 23 that had been sunk by previous owner when dead batteries led to bilge pump failure. The boat was and still is totally sound, and was aquired for 4000 Dollars 5 years ago. Don't really know how our prices here in Va. stack up with yours, but hopefully it'll give you a direct comparision to go by. |

Thanks for the info hopefully I can get the owner to come down to that price range after the survey is completed. Would love to see some pictures of your boat. This model has alot of teak ( hatches & trim) Thanks |

I bought a sunk '85 last year that was in questionable shape. Cracks in the deck along the gunnels. Soft deck in spots. Wiring that was in bad shape, wet stringers, etc. etc. I wound up replacing every removable part from the stringers up. I bought the hull for 5 K and spent twice that in all the new material. I now have a boat that I'm very happy with. My advise is to assume the worst, all work will take twice as long as you may estimate and then you will not be disapointed. Good luck. Dink |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Maine,
let us know how the survey turns out, I'm interested in hearing the results to such a similar case as mine. My boat has a good amount of teak as well, the rod holders under the gunnels, the trim around the instruments and the around the console door, and the splashwell door. I replaced the trim around the two back hatches w/ carbon covered with white gelcoat to better withstand the weathering with less maintanence. |

I'll give a complete rundown Friday in regards to the survey. Sounds like you have the identical trim package. |

The survey was completed this AM and went as follows. The exterior finish is faded but the hull is sound and according to the moisture test it's dry as a bone. The transom had some moisture but was told it was within acceptable limits. Advised me to take some core samples to determine the extent of the moisture. The deck form front of the T top back is shot , high moisture content and sounded very dull when tapped with the mallet. One stringer was high in moisture and had some delamination. Hydrolics for the trim tabs didn't work.Intake line for fuel was bad and needs replacing.Steering needs work . T top cover has holes and needs replaceing. Compass is hardly visible . The owner told me the boat was covered for the past two years the guy who owns the place where he is storing it says it was never covered even in winter. Some of the so called new wireing especially aroud the bilge pump is sub standard and corroded.I'm sure there are things i'm forgetting but will be recieveing a detailed report on the condition and a value estimate for comparably equiped boat in good condition to see if the cost of repairs falls within those limits. Also giving me a CD of all the pictures he took during the survey. The condition of the gas tank could not be determined but advised me to have it examined if I do the deck repair. Gas cap on the boat was left open. My first thought was that anybody who would treat a boat with such disregaurd dosen't deserve to own one.I think my offer price will be around 3000.00. If I don't get the boat and anyone else is interested I'll be glad to pass on the contact number and location ( Freeport Maine home of Larry Larry Bean) |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Sounds like a BIG project. Sorry to hear so much water damage was present.

My simple advise would be to "Forget about this one Maineman" I think you should buy Finster's 23' with the Potter Bracket ready to go; click here--------> Finster's 23' |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
I have the same exact opinion as Capt. Chuck. Having purchased an older SeaCraft that needs work, Finster's solid deck and transom (plus the $3k hermco bracket), sounds like a very good deal.

Thanks guys for plugging my boat, but if it doesn't sell I'm not going to loose sleep. It will mean however that I will have to finish it it someday.... |
Re: Advice : 1987 23' seacraft CC
Thanks to all for your imput I will pass on the 87 Seacraft to much work and to many unknowns for a rookie like me.
Hey finster what would your boat need to make it complete. I assume the trailer does not come with it. Thanks |
