Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Can you guys who have 23' with 250 hp OB's give me your fuel consumption #'s. I would like to see if mine is in the ballpark and also to see if it would be worth the $ to buy a new motor.

Thanks!!

My 250 ox66 Yamaha guzzels the fuel as well. I figure something to the tune of 13-14 gph at 4000 rpm. Are you seeing the same thing? Dink

The 225 OX66 on my father's Sceptre is burning about the same amount as Rich's 250.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

That's about what I am getting at 4400 rpm. At 34-3500 I am between 10.8 and 11.4 gph.

How do the new engines compare to these #'s?

I know there are some mechanical adjustments that can be made by a Yamaha technician. I will have a pro do a tune up in the fall and see if the numbers improve.

Paul,

do you find it somewhat funny that we are both posting about performace of our respective SC engines, at the same time?

see you in newport.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Guys,

Those numbers are nothing. I have twin 1998 Yamaha 150's carb pigs and I bet that I burn close to 20 gallons per hour at around 4,200 RPM's (31 or 32 MPH)

Im around 15-16 gph on my 1991 250vx. I'm getting a 250 4 stroke as soon as I can afford it.

My 250hp Johnson Carbed is mighty thristy also. Although I now am bracketed, according to my flowscan, I am getting approx 15.2 gph @ 4300 and 19.4 gph @ 4800. I think my "Sweet Spot" is around 4200-4400 rms
I top out at 5800-5900 trimed. I am slinging a 14 1/2 x 19 SS Viper prop.

Guys, I know we are all concerned with what we are burning
per hour. But we still own them and love them. This is our hobby our passion and thank God we can afford them. My dad
had the best saying! " If I found out that I was burning
10 gallons an hour instead of 5 gph. What are we gonna do?
Turn around and go home" See ya, Ken

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Has anyone tried or heard about any performance numbers on the new E-Tec 250's? I would think they would fall into line with the Opti-Pop 250. I am still running my old 89 Merc 200 carb on my 23 and it seems to get about 10-12gph at 4200. I was thinking that if I were to repower anytime soon I would get the 250 E-Tec. I have watched (and have) the 25 minute advertisement DVD and like what I see and hear.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

I don't know Gary, The E-TEC's appear to be a good motor.
I myself was a die hard Johnson man until 84.
Then went to Mercury, I have not even considered going back.
A good friend of mine is my marine mechanic and Johnson's
were coming into his shop blown-up on a daily basis. "Kind of scary" Maybe time will tell about the E-TEC's.
But for me. Once you black, you won't go back!!!

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

I fish with a buddy that has twin 250 etecs. Great motors. Strong, quiet, good on fuel and oil. We have around 250 hrs on them and no problems.

There is a charter boat in my area that has a 25 Make with a single 250 etec with 700 hrs and no problems. I will try to get you the fuel burn numbers.

So for what its worth they seem to be good.

I just sold a 2004 225hp DI evinrude with 84 hrs to get a pair of etecs. I have had no problems with the engine I just wanted the new technology.

Skiblet, did you find out anything from your friend on his fuel numbers, really curious as the price of gas keeps rising. We are at $2.65+ at Costco and $2.79-.89 at Chevron/Exxon, etc. I am hearing $3+ on the islands

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Not a 250,but I have a 225 Opti on my 23 . I'm getting 9.8-10 gph at 4000 rpm. I have a Mercury Mirage Plus 15 1/2 X 17 prop turning 5500,44 mph. A freind has a 225 ETEC on a HydraSport ,he's using more gas than his previous 225 Ficht.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

WOW! At those numbers, it sure would take years to break even on price, considering I am getting 10-12 GPH on my 200 HP Carbed Merc at 3800-4000 RPM. Makes me wish I had a flow guage to know for sure, I could be way off.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Gary,I've owned my boat for 20 years, I've had carbed 200's,a carbed 225,a 200 EFI, and the 225 Opti is the most economical motor of the bunch. The 200 EFI is a little better than tne carbed 200 and running at 4000 rpm it got 2 mpg. The carbed 225 couldn't get 1.5 mpg on it's best day. Your motor is 16 years old,if it runs good I'd run it until it dies. Why spend $15,000 to save on gas?

I wonder how those guys that have been putting triples on the back of their 30 something footers feel about their decisions now a days.

I read this post yesterday on the hull truth. There's a guy that has a good comparison of a 34 fountain with trip 250's and twin 275 verado's. An interesting read.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

At this point, I plane to run it til it dies. I talked w/a shop about value, owner said they would buy at fair price just to get the lower end for parts. At this point it runs great and I have a 15hp Honda for a kicker to get me back home if needed. It moves me along great at aout 5-7 MPH depending ont he tide and wind.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

I was at the harbor walking yesterday and one of our local boat builders was launching a new 26 ft aluminum hull boat for the Los Angeles Police Dept. It sure looked good with twin 200 E-Tec's on the back. I talked with the crew and they said they last time they had ran a flow scan hooked to the 200's that they were getting 14gph at @4200 rpm. I would have thought it would be a little better, but he said the boat weighed around 6400 lbs. They were really quiet and ran smooth, but he did stall one while running high rpm pulling/back off the trailer, really put out a cloud of white smoke, but remained quiet, the prop wash was louder than the motor running.

Re: Gas use 250hp on 23' SC

Data from Evinrude site, not the same size boat but close enough for comparison for our 23's/weight etc.
200hp E-Tec 3500rpm/22.6mph/9.61gph/2.4mpg
225hp E-Tec 3500rpm/22.2mph/8.69gph/2.6mpg
Looks like the 225hp is more efficent, I wonder if the 250 would be better yet at the same rpm.
