Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
I finished my 1969 20 CC back in 2003 but after 2 trips to Key West and numerous trips within the Northeast the transom developed some odd cracks underneath the engine.
Turns out the genius who redid the boat (me) did not put enough glass on the top of the transom where the engine sits. I also discovered the gazillion holes in the transom from its past life were rearing their ugly head all over the transom. I removed the engine, beefed up the troubled section and put 2 layers of mat (I do not remember the weight) over the entire transom. So far after this tough summer all has held fine and no subsequent cracks/issues. pics: http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno1.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno2.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno3.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno4.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno5.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno6.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno7.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno8.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno9.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno10.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/reno/reno11.jpg |

Trayder-
Nice job on the '05 repairs. Great shots with close ups to show areas worked on. How's that motor doin? |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
TX-
That motor is nothing short of amazing for that hull I can not say enough good things about it. |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Hey Trayder, sweet setup. Btw, it looks like you made modications to the gunnels like Mark's boat. I don't recall seeing posts about it and didn't have any luck finding it with the search engine. Did you do the work yourself on the gunnels also? Thanks!!!

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Ha Lord Afro
Sorry to here you had to re do some of the boat transom but it looks great Jayson. It seems to me that all boats will always have some sort of extra project that needs to be done sooner or later. I have done several little projects on mine as well. The latest project was to make a mold then build two fiberglass rod holder boxes for either side of the CC. I then installed 3 vertical rod holders in each box. Now it looks kind a like the CC on Contenders or SeaVee’s with the rod holders on either side of the helm. Before that I had a crack in one of my T-Top vertical support arms had a pro repair that. I got my next project on the bench now but want to do some fishing instead of boat work in the near future. Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Thanks Muddywater-
I did all the work to it myself in my garage over a couple of years. I did minor mods to the gunnals but not like Mark's mine are the same width they just end at the transom much differently as I re-configured the entire stern of the boat. Here is a link to the re-do excluding the finish ( I seem to of lost some pictures of the finsh) my 20 restroation |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Hello Old Salt
Yes, I knew I had to take the engine off after one season thats what happens sometimes but it is better now and I fixed other bugs while at that one. I like the console side rod-holders as well I would love to see a pic of yours great to hear from you jason |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Jason, Nice job!
Your "A" frame caught my eye. Looks like a 10 ton hoist. I plan to build one when the garage and house are done. They are real handy for boat work. See ya, Ken |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
I can understand loving that engine, but licking it? Come on dude.

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
I was thinking the same, but that's more than licking, that's.....well you know.....
That just better be a girl motor, that's all I have to say.... |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
So when are you going to update your project site? You stoped about the time the floor went in.

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Accually now that I look again, it looks more like a "cat bath".

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Warthog- As I replied to Muddywater the finished shots have gone with Jimmy Hoffa somewhere ..... I am still looking but after 2 years its not looking good.
No Bones- That is my good friends shop "viking marine" in RI I think it is an 8 ton hoist but not too sure. He just picked up a new forklift and that has been awesome. |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
That's a shame. Sorry you lost them.

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
"Lord Afro"? "Genius"?
Nice job on the quick fix...it happens. don't sweat it, at least you have the ability to slap it up right again..... Also, I Must Admit, back in the day I remember shaking my head when we walked around the project and we talked about "Suzy"....2 years later you were right, of course. seems that down here the 250suzies are the best alternative.... nice work! |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Trayder,
It's a shame you lost the progress pics, but any chance you could post some current shots showing what the back end of your 20 looks like from the inside? I'm interested in how you did the side rails, modified the corner access hatch "boxes" and finished the inside of the hull. Last night, I bought a 1976 20 that I will be picking up later this month, and I've always thought that a solution/mod like the one you are showing (partially, anyway) would be a good setup in that hull. |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Other Tom-
Great to hear from you, you just wait untill you see your title....I never knew you were shaking your head at the Suzuki decision. hmmmmmm would you like any stock tips? Twin 250 Suzuki 4s on your Whitewater may be the ticket. Here is a picture of a splashed 23 SeaCraft that was streched, pulled, bracketed and powered with twin 250 Suzuki's it floats real nice: http://www.classicseacraft.com/tht/seacraftclone.jpg dcobbett- here are some recent pic of the transom from the inside i will do my best to find the rest of the sets but as I have promised Warthog for over a year its not looking good. http://www.classicseacraft.com/tht/fishkw3.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/tht/kw2.jpg http://www.classicseacraft.com/tht/sccutty2.jpg |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Ha Jason
Do you know how much they stretched that boat? It looks like it is sitting in the water pretty evenly. FellowShip |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
I do not know excact numbers but I think Joey and Reel Smoker do, the boat is at the Hurricane Hole in KW.
Off the top of my feeble mind I recal 2-3 feet fore/aft and 1 foot on the beam? I also remember the boat came from South America and there is/was a mold of it in Key West? |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Trayder,
Thanks for those pictures. Hope you find the rest of them. I'd like to see more. When you did the new transom, I assume you went to 25" height, correct? Did you raise the height of the new deck as well? The reason I'm asking is because I'm impressed with teh Suzuki 140 and I've been on 2 SeaCrafts this season with original decks and heavy motors (Honda 130 4S and a 150 Optimax-both weigh the same or more than the 140 Suzuki) and they didn't seem to have wet decks (both hulls had the ping pong ball type scuppers). Regarding the top rail, looks like you essentially cut off the bottom portion of the inner liner (leaving a 2"-3" downturned flange), tied that structure into the new configuration at the transom, and added padded bolsters, correct? Do you think you lost any degree of stiffness in the hull's topsides or overall structure? |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Yes, I raised the Transom to 25" and I raised the deck 3"
As for the innerliner yes, I took a skill saw and ripped it out 4" below the top deck all the way around. I had to add to where the original rod lockers were and I built in 2 thwartship bulkeads that run through the entire middle of the boat and come up to the deck cap on each side. (see midships where the inspection plates are, just aft of the hawse pipes?) I also have other bulkeads under the deck that can bee seen in the series where the original boat only had 4 stringers and then relied on the deck/innerliner to tie it together. No, I did not lose any stiffness. |
Trayder -
I'm lovin the pix of the stern interior -
CSN and I have a seperate discussion ongoing about mods to the rear end of the 20' seafari - I would love to see more detailed pix of the inside stern of yours - looks like you had the same outboard notch size as mine, and your design could be directly applicable to mine. thanks Bill |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Bill-
yes, the sterns of the 20's are the same, I thinkk 90% sure, so my mod would work fine on your boat. Check out the post of the restore in the photos section that was just added by riffraff. He did another nice mod. |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Trayder,
Very nice work on the boat. Can you give some detail on cruising speed, wide open speed and fuel burn at those speeds. I'm thinking of getting the same motor for my project when complete. From the little that I have researched, that motor seems to be very affordable for a good 4 stroker. Thanks -will |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Speaking of stretched, and widened Seacrafts....what ever happened to that guy in Connecticut that split a 23 down the middle and was widenening it to 8'6" and stretching it to 25'???? Last I recall, it was a 5 year project....but have not heard anything in the last couple of years.

Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Will-
In MPH the boat cruises in the high twenties to low thirties and I have hit 45 messing about with light load short chop. There are a ton of 20's that have been repowered with the Suzuki 140 4stroke and everyone I have talked with that has done this re-power is thrilled. My boat is a bit of an oddball on weight, since I replaced everything with Nida-Core the hull is increadibly light. I have been able to put it up on (2) Saw Horses without the engine... Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
Ed- good question
there is a member here "noankbill" who has a similar boat but i do not think it the the infamous 5 year project stretched 23? |
Re: Quick fixes for the the 2005 season
That would be quite a project to extend the length of a Seacraft from 23’3” to 26’. That would make one COOL Seacraft. To do that from scratch would be testing my abilities beyond the max. Maybe I could borrow Capt Chuck’s boat for a few weeks and if someone would lend me their chain saw WELL MAYBE?????? What do you guys think.

I never saw Noank Bill's boat or that other double secret project Seacraft. Maybe they are on in the same??
