Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
Ok so the used Seacraft search is not going well at all. Most of the ones I find need transom floors etc etc and the cost is 9-13 grand plus work needed. Has anyone had any experiences with Key Largos? I just looked at the 236 and can aquire a brand new 2006 236 for $14,900. I compare this to the seacrafts I have been looking at used and similar hull design etc etc brand new boat for 14,9 using my new zuki 225. Have new rig for short money. Looking for opinions.

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
My dive buddy has a 21 Key Largo CC with a Merc 150 on it, the boat is OK the lines do remind me of the Sea Craft, very utilitarian finish inside no frills, seems to be holding up for him. If your going to keep it for many years and it is what you like have at it. However if you are thinking you will use it for a couple years and sell I would worry about resale.

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
Is it true they are using the old seacraft molds? As I was told by local dealer?
|
Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
They probably don't have Seacraft's actual molds but a lot of builders will use a good condition hull to make a new mold...
I've heard OK things about them but that even though they have the same hull layout, they are significantly lighter that they don't ride as well as a SC 23. So while the running surfaces are the same the 400 plus pounds makes a difference. This is from talking to people familiar with both but I have not personaly ridden in one... |
Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
So what John is saying is that if you take him and me with you, It'll ride just like a Seacraft.

Is that both on the bow like auto trim tabs or does one stand on the port side and the other to starboard

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
My girlfriends father has one and to be honest I was very suprised by the ride of the boat. I am not impressed with the finish of the boat but you get what you pay for. He has a 200 carb merc and it will clock up to 42-43 knots. I have to say we made the mad dash to nantucket a few times in 3-5 footers and boat did beautifully. If I was in my privateer I would have had to go at 12 knots and kidneys would have been in my shoes. I love the privateer it is a tank and a great platform to fish off of but a bit hard on the kidneys and knees on the way in or out. But for 17 with t-top gps and roller trailer it is hard toi beat I think. Still looking for the seacraft but the new boat does have its benefits.

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
It's the same with the Palm Beach. Spitting image of a SC hull, though the fit and finish is rough on both, more so on the Keywest.
I remember last years AC boat show, I was leaning over checking out the Keywest's hull when the salesman starts on me, "thats a Seacraft hull that is! Best riding boat known to man!" When I stood up and turned round he got one look at my CSC teeshirt and booked. Didn't say another word.... |
Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
Yeah I had a similar situation at the NY boat show after looking at all of the other boats they wandering to the Key Largo booth. The fit and finish was a real turn off. However I pound the hell out of things and the boat does have a utilitarian concept to it that I do like. I understand it is lighter than the potter hulls my only issue is that in my recent search for a hull. I am finding mid 70's vintage boats needing complete overhauls for 9 grand after dropping another 6-8 in glass work into the boats and outfitting with t-top for 2 electronics for 3 and trailer for 3 into the boat for 25+ before I put my motor onto it. i could in theory save 10 g and but the new Key largo/Palm Beach. I am having a hard time though because those old seacrafts are such beautys and you rarely see of the older ones on the water of which I am a huge fan.

If the money is close you will end up liking your Key Largo or loving your SeaCraft.

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
If pride and personal satisfaction of a job well done are of paramount importance to you then choose the SeaCraft. There is no other option. Men that look at the lines of a 30 year old Formula 23, Bertram 31 or a rare Blackfin 33 and just simply LUST after those boats are a different breed than 99.5% of all the me too boat owners out there.
You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself. AM I A SEACRAFT MAN? ....or a key whatever man. For me, ever since my dad took me to the NY boat show when I was 8 or 9 years old I knew I was a SeaCraft MAN! 30 years later I still am. |

shoctor - After rigging, new power, and the bells and whistles you'll be over 35k easy on a Key Largo 236.
I love the 23, but if you're hesitant about a restore and considering dropping 35K into a new key largo . . . I'd expand my search and look at some other boats. For the same $$$ you could buy a 21 Contender or repower an older Wellcraft Scarab Sport 302. Just something to think about before you drop down that kind of cash. http://images.traderonline.com/img/6...81376882_1.jpg http://images.traderonline.com/img/6...81167280_1.jpg http://adcache.boattraderonline.com/6/8/0/81167280.htm |
Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
The Key largo was 17K including t-top gps/fishfinder (Garmin 188C ) Seastar hyd steering and Venture Roller trailer with Suzuki pre - rig. I already have the motor to drop onto it. I was going to add radar and rocket launchers few lights etc etc about another 2500 I figured keeping it under the $20K number. I would love a contender but more of a fan of the regulator and have seen some for relatively short money (low 20's) and did some thinking. I just love the old seacrafts but the no hassle of a new boat can be nice.

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
That seems like a good deal for a new boat.
If you really want a seacraft . . . this one might be a good match for your motor. http://www.yachtworld.com/core/listi...95&slim=quick& |
Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
Bad A** pic!! I'd love to have have blown up poster of that. It appears that going airborne is a trait of red SeaCrafts. It also seems that NoBones rents out the cat suit. Or does he pass along like the Gucci?

Re: Not a seacraft but what are the opinions.....
Must be the red seacrafts.
