Long Island Sound Gathering?

Last year I tried to get a CT gathering going and there was some interest but it didn't pan out. I'm just throwing this out to see who is interested but we should start talking about an LIS gathering. It seems there are plenty of new guys from the area so what do you think?

Last year we were going to meet at Duck Island, which is fairly central to the eastern side, and do a small fluke tournament. Lets plan something that will get the most boats and people. Here is some inspiration for that....

This is not meant to take away from the Newport gathering, when is that going to be this year? I have missed it twice now, maybe I can get there this year, hopefully.

Here are the old posts.

That sounds good too, lets plan a few events. I still would like to get some of the guys up from the Wester side of the sound. Open to all suggestions.

I'd be in if it were not too far. I've got a trailer, but would rather cruise.I'm coming from Mt. Sinai (Port. Jeff area) in NY.
Incidentally, the fluking has been beyond red hot during the end of june the last few years right outside our harbors. I won't say it lasted a whole long time, but it was as good as it gets when it was on.

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

I hear ya on the June bite. Last year we called it "Flukin in June" but it never happened.

I am sure that some of us Jersey guys could come over and put on a fishing clinic for you.

Do I here a challenge........ :D
LIS vs. Jersey Shore....biggest slab wins!!!!

PipeDreamsMarine 03-17-2006 11:45 AM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Can I bring my own slab.. I have a great hole which gives up a few 30"+ mats every year... lol sounds like fun just got to see how the summer plays out.

Bryan A. 03-17-2006 12:02 PM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Don't you love those holes :D
They seem to produce year after year. Up here there are some that get passed down generation to generation. Now that the Fluke are on the comeback those old spots are even better.

peterb 03-17-2006 01:15 PM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Sounds like we need to have a neutral spot around the sound (as though there is such a place).

All kidding aside, if I can swing it I would love to do it.

Bryan A. 03-17-2006 09:41 PM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Aside from Oldfielder, its seems we have more NJ and RI guys stepping up to the challenge than LIS. Where is everybody............... :D Bottom bumping for Fluke must not be glamourous enough. :D

All in good fun and fishing. Is winter over yet? So close but yet so far......

peterb 03-18-2006 03:36 PM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Finster, we could do a home and home series. First trip up north and then we could do a summer LBI/Little Egg Harbor rematch.

Yes, it is in fun.

On a related matter we are already getting consistant reports of striped bass being caught on both worms and clams at Union Beach, NJ. This is in the western portion of Raritan Bay, NJ. It is a shallow sod back area, and is usually the first place in central NJ to start producing.

I plan on putting on rig in the water on April 1, and going winter flounder & bass fishing. We will see.

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

I'm up for what ever you guys want to put together. My only problem is I'm joined at the hip with a towboat once it goes in the water (which my be tomorrow).
But I'm sure I can pull off a quick trip here and there.

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

I'm in of course. The boat is going to stay on the trailer up in New Haven through the spring, so I just have to haul it up happy I 95!

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Jim - I was hoping you would pop your head in sooner or later.

Guys - Lets come up with a date. Any suggestions.

Finster - we'll call for a tow from Mystic to Cape May  on the day we decide to fish. :D BTW I worked for Tow Boat US part time for a summer a few years back.

It was cool, but at the time I was working another job and starting a family so the COOL tow boat job had to go on hold for a while, maybe in the future. Need any help?

I'd be interested. Sorry for the late reply, I never check the gathering section. It always seems to be about Fla.

any progress on a date or location?

Bryan A. 04-17-2006 09:12 PM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

I have been waiting for other guys to chime in thinking more people would be able to make it if they chose the date. Last year things fell apart at the last minute. What are the dates for Newport and Chatam? I'd like to start planning something too. Suggest a date and we'll go from there.
Now I really need to get my boat back together. :o

Trayder 04-18-2006 09:34 AM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Chatham July 15 or 16
Newport (same as Jazz Fest) weekend of August 12th.

I am not a Fluke fisherman but though late May early June is a good time? How about a weekend after your classes are finished?

Bryan A. 04-18-2006 11:23 AM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

That would be the 24, 25 of June. Which is the Montauk Marine Basin Shark Tourny for us. Then we are into July 1,2 which is going to be the 4th of July wekkend this year, Then we are close to Chatam time. Maybe end of July? Not the best Fluke time but it fits the Schedual (Now we need a secretary for this site to handle the event timing) :D :D

Or the weekend between the Fourth and Chatam (8th & 9th)????

Trayder 04-20-2006 10:14 AM

Re: Long Island Sound Gathering?

Not looking good for me in late June July.
