Cabosil Suplier???
 

Any one have a good source for Cabosil (Coloidal Silica) either near my location or online? I need to buy a fair amount,(yet to be determined) and I refuse to bend over at West marine or the like.

Find out where the local fiberglass guys buy their materials - and buy it there - that's what I did. MUCH cheaper - I bought all my stuff from suppliers like that. i.e. Five gallon bucket of quality resin w/ catalyst - $75 !

I have sourced :D a supplier at $78.00 for a ten pound bag, can you beat that? I can't believe you would want to get rid of any. No more future projects? :o I doubt I will need ten pounds now but it won't go bad and I know I will use the stuff for other projects down the line.

I do not know their price but know they have it in bulk.

10lb's would be a 30lb dog food size bag. What in the world would you do with that mutch?

Certinally not for fairing.

I have just about stopped using it all together. Unstaed I use FGCI's 2 to 1 epoxy bonding putty.

I do use a little Cabisol now and then. If I'm spot welding something together. I'll add a little to some 5min epoxy to thicken it up so it doesn't run. then I'll come back and run my fillet's in the Bonding putty right over those spot's.

No I will not be using the whole10 lbs for my current project but I would like to have it around for future projects, wishful thinking. Its the whole buy in bulk theory, You know you buy 30 lbs. of Goldfish crackers at the wholesale price because it is cheaper then when you get home you realize you bought 30lbs of goldfish crackers.
I am realy not sure how much I need at this point.

Wart - What's the advantage of the bonding putty? Less mixing, or air intrusion?

Warthog, do you have a link to the manufacturer of that stuff? Or any links to it online? I am making my first "supply run" for materials this morning for my deck project and will ask if they have that stuff.

This place down by me in Fl has 10 lbs for $61 and change but not sure on shipping. For bonding and fairing I use Arjay 2001 bonding puddy and fairing compound. It is strong and very easy to work with. Warthog are you familiar with it? Here is the link http://www.fiberglassservices.com/index.htm

Alright, I got my large super bag of aoerosil yesterday. I am looking for good ideas on transfering this stuff. As you know it is very light and gets everywhere. What is the best way to go to smaller containers to work from? The bag has a pour spot which works but you still lose some.

Another question. What is the best way to mix up larger batches of Epoxy and Cabosil? My hand is getting tired, (Finster I don't want to hear it) from mixing this stuff.
I have seen people use a drill, but with what kind of attacment? And a mixing container with a hole in the top.

And now you know why I pretty much quite using it.

You must mix your epoxy first. minum of 3min of stiring. You have now induced air into the the epoxy. then you start adding the cabisol at small rates to get the consisity that you want. Another 3,4 or 5min of stirring.

At the dollar store you will find large tupperware container's to store the stuff in.

I always used a drill and a mixer like what comes with the 2 part foam kits. It seems to work great.

Thanks guys, I am very familiar with how to mix epoxy. I have my own reasons for using it on this project. Just looking to streamline the process.
I like the idea about the tuperware, I am thinking of one of those large cereal containers with the lid and spout, that should do the trick.

Ntrain2K - any pics of what you are talking about. What is it shaped like? Is it easy to clean? I was thinking about bending up some 1/4" rod and see how that works. Just need to come up with a shape.

That would be fine, but I was thinking of several container's that were 8in to 9in high X 14in or so X 24in long.

You can just pop the lid and just use a 16oz Dixie cup to scoop some out.

By the way a little goes a long way in thickening. I goes much farther than microballon's.

I just let it sit in a bucket of acetone overnite and the foam mix just peels most of the way off. They are cheap enough to toss after several uses. Here is a link to an all metal one.

When I mixed up cabosil and resin I would use a stuck and scrape of the extra that is in the mixer, then stick the mixer down in a big can and hit the trigger in the drill. The spinning takes the majority of it off. Then a good cleaning with a rad and acetone gets the rest.

For mixing large quantities of Cabosil, I went to Home Depot and purchesed 1 & 2 gallon plastic buckets with lids. I cut a small hole in the lid to accept my paint mixer. This keep the dust inside the bucket and got pretty good consistancy.

Sounds like you've received lots of advice, but I'll add my two cents. I use Cabosil grade PTG in my business and we buy through a distributor, Mozel Inc. 800-950-5670. The Aerosil product is made by Degussa Corporation and I'm sure you could find a source for it on the intenet. Good Luck.
