filling minor scratches and chips

hey Guys,
I have a few minor scratches and chips in my hull. Is there a way to fill them to match the Gel Coat?
I have a 1985 23 ft cc, white.

Is there something that will match?

thx in advance

Re: filling minor scratches and chips

I have been experimenting with a can of gelcoat white I bought from west marine. I am no expert but it matches my boat pretty good. I am filling scratches and dents as well as applying it over small repairs. So far so good but it does have its quirks. Maybe some of our experts could chimne in. The board has been slow lately, I think alot of guys are working on their boats or fishing.
Hope this helps. I have been researching applying gelcoat over epoxy with some success.

I just got this stuff;

I could not see spending all the money for the kit and have alot of stuff I will not use, It matches close for me right out of the can.

Hermco - In your experience what do you use to match new white gelcoat to a 20 year old faded white one? Brown or Yellow tint or something else. Right now I am spot patching voids and scratches. I may try spot spraying with an airbrush in the future. The stuff is Ok out of the can but the old stuff is faded. Do you think it will match better after a season or should I try to tint it now? Thanks again.

How do you guys prepare and treat minor scratches with Gelcoat?? I have a few scratches and dents that are very minor, how should I prep the area? Thanks for the help

I have been opening them up with a dremel tool and wiping down with denatured alcohol them applying with a toothpick or small brush. After it hardens block it down with 400 grit or so then buff if desired. Again I am no expert and just started playing with gelcoat. But I am happy with he results so far.

Haven't tried that stuff but I looked at it at the store and decided regular gelcoat was a better deal. The amount you get in that tube is nothing compared to the can. I wonder how that stuff matches? If you try it, let us know. I still think regulard gelcoat is the way to go.

Re: filling minor scratches and chips

Fas-Stone Epoxy filler . Manf by Fasco. Two part. dries white and sands like fiberglass.
Fasco Epoxies

Check the web site for explanation of their products. They can give you list of distributors. I use it for all my repairs, niks, scratches etc. because I paint over it. Very little porosity.

Hermco gives the best advise. Just another alternative here vs gelcoat ;)

Yeah, Anyone know what color egent to tint the white gel coat to get the faded 20yr seacraft white color? Has anyone matched it closely? I used plain white Evercoat Scratch patch but its really white. Anyone have any suggestions. Maybe after weathering a bit...

Re: filling minor scratches and chips

I start with a mustard color tint. It is not easy to match gelcoat colors. It takes me hours sometimes. You might want to find someone who does gelcoat repairs and pay them if you want a good match.
