Black Drum
Just came in a bit ago with this behemoth black drum. We were bass fishing when I hooked up with it. I won't have an official weight until tomorrow, but I am guessing somewhere around 100lbs.

Re: Black Drum
Thats a big one. They have been pretty thick down here lately there are a couple of tournaments down here for black drum this time of year but they are catch and release only for the big ones can't remember the max reg. but it's not to big I think 28 or so inches.

Re: Black Drum
The 2006 All-Tackle record is 113 lbs, 1 oz so I suggest you have it weighed on an IGFA certified scale ASAP just in case!

Re: Black Drum
Man I thought for sure I had some sort of local record beat. I would have sworn it felt more than 105lbs last night. I had it weighed this morning and it was 69.4, they usually loose 5% sitting overnight so it was around 75lbs.
I have my doubts about the edibility of it, the meat was dark and red. I have some neighbors that are going to try it. :D http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...l/DSCN2243.jpg |

I find the "Green Gucci" to be a very multifunctional asset to any fisherman/boater. After a light spay with the garden hose, bamb! right back on the vette. :D And I think the half dollar scales that are stuck to it only adds to it ambiance. :D |
Re: Black Drum
on the eastern shore of Va. , they eat it religiously- say it taste like poke chops- there are a lot of worms close to the tail in most of em that size- here on the southside of the chesbay most people dont eat em. Although Al-B (member of CSC) loves em, or so Im told, lol. Nice blackie.

I've heard the called that around here also Never heard of anyone eating the big ones but a buddies dad loves the 15-20 inchers, think I'll stick with the reds. |
Re: Black Drum
Eat'n wise. If you talk to 20 different people you get 20 different answers....But after talking with some of the old local's, they used to be so thick in here they would coral'em and throw in a stick of dynamite just to get rid of'em.
From a sporting point of view, on 20lb. test it was a blast. Next one I'm throwing a sadel on and going for a ride. Just got in a bit ago with some nice bass action and too many blues. |
Re: Black Drum
Eat'n wise you right and all 20 have a different way to cook them. The small or medium are always so so if your not lookin for them but the larger ones frequent or bay system every year at this time. Personally between little league baseball, work, and yardwork 2 acres I can't get anytime to fish, all this talk about fishing is making me jealous.

The neighbors gave the drum the thumbs down, but their not giving up yet, they have another recipe to try. I'm not too optimistic. |
Re: Black Drum
I hear ya, normally I'm fishing 2-3 times a month 10 months a year this last year I think I made it out 7 times. Like most all here I have so much time and MONEY invested in fishing/boating and I so rarely get to go, it makes me sick, like a junky with no fix.

Re: Black Drum
Boy are you guys right on.
When I was young and did not have a lot of money, I fished 4 to 5 times a week. Now older and not so much smarter with a little more money :D. I might fish 4 to 5 times a year :(. Whats wrong with this picture? Just gotta go do it........ See ya, Ken |
