A New Boat to Check Out
I've been learning from everyone here on CSC.com for about six months now. I thought some might like to see the boat I (meaning me and F&B Boatworks in Savannah, Ga) have been working on. The hull is 1974. I knew the transom was bad and the floor had some soft spots.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc2.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc3.jpg Probably no surprise to anyone, but the wood that came out of the transom looked more like mulch. The floor was worse than I thought and the whole thing was removed. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc7.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc5.jpg Stringer Shock! There were many places where the junction between the wall and the top of several stringers was fractured. We decided to cut out the top of the stringers and remove the water saturated foam that weighed a ton. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc10.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc11.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc9.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...pines/csc8.jpg The stringers were repaired and new foam poured. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc12.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc13.jpg I'll try and post more pictures in the next few days as I've finally gotten the hang of photobucket. |

Here are some pictures of the transom re-build to this point.

I just picked up the motor bracket day before yesterday (thanks to Don at HermCo and Capt. Chuck for the advice!) More to come. |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Looking good. Good luck, I'll be starting the same project very soon on my 23'.
|
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Are you going with a single engine bracket or twin engine bracket? What kind of boat is that to the right of yours?
strick |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Strick,
I'm going with a single bracket. The boat next to mine is a 1978 Blackfin. |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
What is the pink stuff on the outside of the transom? Looking good. :D

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Looks like high build 545 Awlgrip primer to me.
See ya, Ken |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
You are right NoBones, It is AwlFair epoxy fairing compound.
Here are some more progress pictures, this time of the transom cap that has been pre-fabricated. Still trying to catch up to "present day" progress. The baitwell was constructed as an oval and then sectioned so that the rear matches the transom angle. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc29.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc30.jpg The cap was layed up in a jig, and the baitwell mounted along with storage boxes on either side. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc31.jpg After assembly, the storage boxes were insulated with foam. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc39.jpg Baitwell and boxes being faired so that they can be primed and painted. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc32.jpg That's all I've got for today. I'm knocking off early to fish. |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Right on. How were you planning to do the hatches for the storage boxes and the bait well. I routed out the openings for the hatches on my 23cc. I then made some small molds for the actual hatches. I wished I had planned ahead and molded in the openings for the hatches instead of routing. It would have saved me tons of time routing, sanding and fairing.

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
I have a 1979 23 outboard with soft floors and all the usual aging problems. Can you recommend a good restorer in Florida?

Re: A New Boat to Check Out

Re: A New Boat to Check Out

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
boat8, I haven't been on csc long enough to know anyone in that part of FL. Hopefully someone will check out this thread who does.
strick, I plan to cut the hatch and baitwell covers directly from the top of the transom cap. The baitwell and storage boxes are glassed to the bottom, with no opening through the cap yet. This way, they will be a perfect match. Here are some more pictures to show what I'm doing before the floor goes back in. The original console was the large one with a door up front and a box in the floor for an optional head. I'm probably going to build a completely new console since it's in pretty rough shape. I've also removed the large box in the floor under the console in order to get a larger fuel tank and a battery box under part of the new console. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc33.jpg The new laminated platform for the fuel tank is being glassed to place. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc22.jpg The beginnings of the battery box. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc24.jpg Once the battery box was initially laid up, we decided the extra room could be used to add a small (7 Gal.) wash down tank. On top of the fresh water tank is a macerator pump that wiil be used to de-spooge the in-floor box which is just in front of the console (it has obviously been removed in these pictures). http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc25.jpg Here is another picture after priming. The macerator pump has been removed.http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc34.jpg Pictures of the fuel tank in my next post. |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
I decided to powder coat the fuel tank for extra protection... plus it looks way cool. The welded tabs on the sides are to bolt it to mounting blocks that will be glassed onto the adjacent stringers.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc23.jpg Rubber strips were applied the full length of the bottom using 5200. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc36.jpg Fuel tank and transom cap are trial fit into place. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc40.jpg |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
hey bonefish- looks really good- just one thing- there might be someone on the board that might like to have that console or any other original parts so dont immediatley just trash them if you are not going to use them!!! put em up for auction on the for sale board !!!- again - pretty work- craig

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Nice work. I like your scupper tubes.

http://www.casdvm.com/photos/Consel%20Refurb/index.htm I contemplated getting a totally different consel as well but I changed my mind and just re-did the original one the way I wanted and now I'm happy that I did. They are very stable and functional. It also keeps the boat looking like a Classic SeaCraft. :) strick |

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Here are some pictures of the scupper set up. It's designed to minimize the number of holes through the hull. The actual scupper tubes were molded and epoxied into place. A drain pipe for the baitwell is seen.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc41.jpg The transom was ground from the outside, so that the tube could be glassed back over and cut out, basically making it an integral part of the transom. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc42.jpg PVC drain lines were molded with a heat gun and epoxied into the scupper tubes. Both the tubes and drain lines are angled so that nothing flows into the boat. Seen here are drains for the baitwell, the port side bilge pump, the forward in-floor fishbox, and the port side insulated storage box in the transom cap. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc46.jpg Here are both sides with the drains epoxied into the scupper tubes. Note that the entire cap has been removed in this picture. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc47.jpg A view from the outside of the port side scupper. The transom has been glassed and initially faired, and the drain lines are visible as they enter into the scupper tube. Fairing still needs to be done where each drain line joins the tube. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc48.jpg |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Very nice work looks like you've done this before.
|
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
I wish I could take the credit, but it goes to my friends at F&B Boatworks here in Savannah. They really know how to get it right through experience, and are pretty cool about letting me think that I'm making the decisions.

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
My wife, does the same thing to me.

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Bob-
You are hard to get in touch with. Call me at home or work I have some questions about the boat, it looks great I was over there a couple of weeks ago. Bill Bowers |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
We are creeping up on finishing the transom. Here is the inner wall being trial fit.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc53.jpg A view of the back side of the inner transom wall. The flanges have been installed on the lower hatches. PVC rod holder tubes are also epoxied in place. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc54.jpg The wall assembly glassed in place. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc56.jpg |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Bonefish i hope you wont be offendid if i copy some of the idea's on your transom well and boxs's ! I have looked at alot of enclosed transom's and i like your's alot. I will probably put multiple tuna tubes in the transom as well maybe 2-3 on each side.
|
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Very nice work! looks like the ultimate 23' is taking shape.
|
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Bonefish....very nice work there....I'll be stealing some ideas for my Sceptre. I like the scuppers.... I'll have to wait to inspect my boat to see what has to be done. I guess there are no issues with the epoxy bonding to the PVC?? That's surprising...
What did you use to mold the scupper tubes??? Again....great work.... |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Foam was shaped to make the mold for the scupper tubes.
|
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
More progress pics. The cap was removed to reveal a balsa core that was mush. It was ground out and replaced with foam.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc49.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc50.jpg Space in the foam core to fit a new anchor pulpit. Pipes were also added as wire chases. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc51.jpg Larger side supports were fabricated. The starbord side houses the fresh water fill. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc28.jpg New forward bulkhead. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc55.jpg The entire underside of the cap was painted prior to trial fitting. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc52.jpg The cap will be permanently replaced after the floor goes in. |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Very nice job on this boat. I see a potter bracket in that second pic :D I'm going to copy your pvc wire tubes. Is the gunnel support made from foam as well? I've been contemplating on making two of those for each side on my 20 project.

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
strick
The pictures from the cap of your 20 prompted my last post. The gunnel supports did come from a foam mold. The enlarged size provides a lot more room on the starbord side for the fresh water fill, and on the port side for the fuel hose. It is a Potter bracket...hopefully we'll bolt the rascal on before too long. |

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Bonefish: That is a great looking transom...what size Seacraft is it? Are you installing a bracket + outboard engine? What size? -- Thanks for info, aaf

Re: A New Boat to Check Out
I'm real pleased with how the transom has come out. The boat is 23'. We plan to install the bracket soon, although I still haven't decided on the motor.
Here's the bracket ready to go. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc35.jpg |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
The bracket is finally in place. One of the many things to wrap up before the floor goes back in.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc64.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc65.jpg Baitwell plumbing finished. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc72.jpg Bilge pump "cartridges" were fabricated so that the pumps can be changed out very easily. They are attached to the back side of the inner transom wall. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc68.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc69.jpg Battery boxes are finished. Macerator pump for forward fish box in place on top of fresh water holding tank. Fresh water fill and vent hoses are attached. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc70.jpg http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc71.jpg The cap is finished up and ready to go back on. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc66.jpg The cap is completely glassed in place. Much more stiff. http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ines/csc73.jpg |
Re: A New Boat to Check Out
Hey Bonefish...that boat is looking amazing. How big is that fuel tank and where did you get it??? (PM me) Those foward battery boxes are very nice too. The more you post the more I think I'll be modifying my Tsunami....
