Phase one of my could be major overhaul

I said back in the spring that i would post some before and after pix of my refit so here are my phase one motor restoration before and afters- right much other work to be done on the boat both cosmetic and mechanical- I rewired the boat completely two years ago so that is done. Hopefully I will get another 10 years or so out of the 350 PCM/Mercruiser Hybrid:D The compression on all the cylinders was fine , total cost for me so far is ~3500$. I paid a friend to do my motor work for me this time around cause I really just didnt feel up to it. 3 back surgeries and a host of other medical problems and mama said go ahead and let someone else take care of my motor so I jumped on that. Not an easy decision for me though as I dont like anyone tinkering, messing with my boat/ motor, anything- but me- But Danny is the man though and I do trust ed him to do my work and you can tell the kind of work he did. the pix dont do it justice either. The remainder of the work I will probably do on my own. Recoring two hatches and some awlgrip, we will see. . first the way my boat looked right before I pulled her out of the creek-old pix , the bilge and out of sight hoses that could have caused big problems- remember this motor was running sweet when I removed her. There is another thread talking about Holly carbs pros/cons etc. The flat top marine holly on this motor took about 7 years to dial in. I refuse to touch it at this time so it was not pulled/reworked etc. anyways- next i will be doing some deck work/ maybe new fuel tanks depending on how the current ones look, they are around 10 years old, and putting her all back together so I can at least get some meat time this year- pretty self explanatory- PS- my boat looks discusting minus everything and all tore up . So much so it is a little embarressing, so the end product will be much better- (slimed and bloodied up).

Prior to hauling my ride....

My muffler had some cracking in the pieces shown so some glass repair was done. After wrapping with glass cloth and resin the sheetmetal was waxed and staystrapped around the partially set up resin- when the resin repair cured the metal piece peeled right off and left a nice flange for the exhaust to clamp to.

All sanded down , parts being reinstalled including the tranny- tranny got new rear seal, flushed etc. borg warner - velvet drive 1.52-1

Heads sanded and painted BEFORE exhaust manifolds installed- its pretty tough to paint them after. the exhaust /mating surfaces were all milled for a perfect fit as were all the new parts- water pumps risers etc.

That pretty new powerplant cant go back in the boat without cleaning and repainting the bilge- 2 part epoxy paint I have always thought my stainless keel under my running gear was aftermarket stuff bought by the police (former police boat in its early life). However if you look closely you can see where the keel is bolted through and it appears that pads were made in the hull for this purpose and maybe it was a seacraft factory option.

Dropping her back in the boat, it was getting dark so the pic is not great

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006060.jpg

And here are a couple of shots with her set in, lined up and bolted back in place. The motor mounts use stainless lag bolts that screw directly into the huge seacraft- foam filled stringers- They are epoxied in so as they will need to be heated in order to remove them.

Ha Miles;

I have always kind of liked the idea of a straight inboard 23’ but after seeing all you had to go through to replace and repair the power plant. I am convinced outboard power
“for me” is the way to go. You did a great job and I know the ride must be fantastic But 4 bolts and redoing the transom every once in a while sounds more like my bag. I wouldn’t know where to start on your inboard project.

hey guyz thanx a bunch- other than the motor though my boat really looks like sheet. Thanx Chance-Nick I use that tinfoil treat right often- nice hot sandwitch on a cold day is always nice !!! Chuck- no green gucci for me ! Lotsa bloody decks and blood pumping out the bilge is my kinda gucci!!! (that and teak, lol). Hey Don, that aft deck is coming up and the remainder of the bilge will be painted also, including that coupling. Since I have worked for the navy for 30 plus years now , i generally like to paint anything that doesnt move! I do have a question for you though, after I remove the hatch and do tank inspection if they look bad then I will probably replace them. Do you make them??? Ill get back with you via phone or b-mail if you do. Fellowship- the motor itself is easy to work on and so are the different systems associated with an inboard. my biggest pia was dissasembly of all the electronics, t-top , wiring , console etc. Took me a couple days to do that. Ill update theis post with pix as i go along. wont be fast though- craig

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

Hey all- well its on to phases 2 and 3 now- since the summer is screaming by and the friggen billfish bite is insane i thought i might just pull and paint the rear hatch, inspect the fuel tanks and take care of the normal bottom/hull haulout stuff-zincs/paint-etc. anyways after getting that big -heavy ass rear hatch removed i inspected the bottom of it expecting just laminated plywood on the backside like I have seen on some other "well known" boats. Much to my pleasant surprise there is laminated plywood ,along with laminated ribs spaced every 20 inches or so. no water intrusion whatsoever-(see pics). So looking at my tanks and bilge they didnt "appear" to be too awful bad so I poked and prodded the "dreaded foam" around 2 sides of the tanks and it seemed dry. (seemed is the key word here). I was doing some repairs on the deck piece and pondering paint and such when curiosity got the better of me. There was an area with a slight amount of corrosion on the filler tube of the starboard tank that just on a whim I sprayed with wd-40 and an area immediately turned black. Damn I didnt like the llooks of that so i said the hell with this , i am going to prod this foam a little more and then started seeing some moisture. Now flashback to february when striper season was winding down- one day i noticed my stbd fuel gage on "E". didnt think much of it but thought i had fuel in it so maybe the sending unit wqent bad which seems to happen occasionally. Well to make a long story short and two days of diggen out nasty water soaked foam, I found a hole about 3/8" wide by 1/2" long in the forward end of the tank. I guess Im lucky me and my buds werent the next shuttle test pilots. Never smelled any fumes at all though so go figure. Now its replacing both tanks , hoses etc and then Ill worry about the decks and cosmetic stuff, lol. Heres some boat porn for you guys that like it. More to come- craig

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

Hey Craig, how are ya? Man, now you've got my curiosity. I've always had a strong odor in my garage where my 20 is stored. But this year I've noticed a stronger odor coming through the rigging opening in the floor. I'm not sure that my tank has not been replaced before because the 90* fill on top is ever so slightly taller than what would have ever been factory. Even a very small 6" square access plate over top, yet it is not even close to the thickness of the original hatch. Pretty bad when my battery switch is about 6' above the rigging hole! Take care. Mike.

Miles Offshore 07-24-2006 09:18 PM

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

hey Mike - if you smell a strong odor then you had better figure out what it isand where it is coming from quickly- i would also suggest disconnecting your batteries until you figure it out!!!! Those tanks in mine believe it or not are not the original tanks either- they were replaced when the diesal was replaced with a gas engine in 1987. (date on top of tank). No sheeter though Mike- if your tanks are original then you probably need to get them out and replace . let us know the verdict!!!!!

You might want to take that boat out of your garage until you get her fixed.
Gas fumes + spark = one unhappy wife and one replacement house.

Craig-

Sorry to hear you are missing all that good billfish fishing but I dont feel too sorry for you because we dont have any billfish fishing over here we have to go and catch those nasty bat rays if we want to have any fun!
On a more serious note...it's good to see you found a potential disaster and are fixing it. I'd do away with the foam during this re-model let your bilge breath better. Thanks for keeping us posted. I see you have included the famous toe shot in one of your pics.
PS I like your new fiberglass spa cover. :D

Hmmmm, they are some pretty toes huh, strick! glad to hear you are watching my rebuild attempt. I can handle a lot of the mechanical stuff but my glass work leaves much to be desired, so i am studing you guys works of art and will give them my best shot....but i can only hold out so long before i must fish!!!! . I pulled the foam out of the port side tank today and it is completely dry. go figure. I got my rudder stuffing box broke loose today also finally which ive been dickin around with a while. Im thinkin instead of awlgrip on the deck I might just use interdeck epoxy cause it really aint going to do nothing but get beat up again???? (gaff hooks, bats, nets, rod butts etc :D). Im just not sure its worth the extra cost for the deck. Cap will be a different story. Mama is being unbelievably non-combatent too, i wonder whats up wit dat??? :D :D- Im going to use 1/2" solid silicone rubber strips to lay in the hull lengthwise under the tanks and use gary hills method of 3 or 4 coats of epoxy primer on the tanks and use just a minimum amount of foam to keep the tanks from shifting. Ill shoot some pix and keep posting them as i put her back together.-

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

After slow progress since my last update and looks like I am getting a "free trip" via Unckle to Seattle for a few weeks my progress will continue to be slow so I thought I would update my progress . I did remove the old tanks and had new ones fabricated. While I was waiting for the tanks to be madeI took care of some other stuff since I had the hatch removed. I replaced my 4" exhaust hose, Ran new bilge hose, and also removed and replaced all of the fuel lines. One of the things I found when replacing the vent lines on my starboard tank was a nice hole in it that from the looks and location appears to have come from a screw being turned into the hose when the cap was screwed into place via the rubrail. That was a good find. The limber holes that drain from outside the outboard stringer into the bilge were also clogged up and I cleared them up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010015-1.jpg Makes good sense to replace all fuel fittings and hoses when replacing tanks. For whatever reason I have had problems finding my new fill hose so Im still waiting on that and also new sending units for my tanks which I will replace after the new hatch is back in place.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/S4010065.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/S4010066.jpg

I zinc cromated them and then painted them with rustolium before reinstalling into the boat.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...6/S4010070.jpg

It was a good time to repack the stuffing box on my rudder which was a major pain in the ass because of the very limited amount of room in the hole.I had made some feeble attempts at breaking the packing gland in the past but since it was not leaking never got it done. I ended up having to heat it up with a torch to finally get the nut to break loose. There was quite a bit of shaft play before I repacked it and afterwards it is now gone. Im real happy to have gotten this fixed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010014-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010017-1.jpg
While the other work was going on inside the boat I finished painting my main deck hatch and think it came out really nice. Heavy on the nonskid with 3 additional coats of easypoxy on top of that.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010012-1.jpg

The bilge area is ready for my new gas tanks- I placed 1/8" silicone rubber strips in various locations underneath the tanks to set on. I staggered them as well to allow some air flow and drainage if needed(i dont expect water to get up this high but you never know). I also have routed my new remote bilge pump hose, rerouted my hydraulic steering lines and transducer cable along the inside.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010007-1.jpg

Heres a before pic of the inside of the transom before I got the wiring cleaned up along with the new fuel lines installed. Note the two thin lines where I figured out my trim tab pump is leaking a minute amount of hydraulic oil. Gonna have to figure out why but right now Im not too concerned- hopefully only a gasket/seal or something. (Just something else, lol)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...S4010013-1.jpg

That is as far as this post goes- I have more work done that I will add on after a while showing my new tanks installed. Craig :)

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

Why are you using automotive style crimp connector's in a boat?

Unstead of using crimp shrink connector's. Even then in a wet bildge they should have shrink tubing with the glue covering them.

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

Those particular crimps I did not replace- I dont know if they are original or replaced by the city when they repowered from diesal to gas in 85. Good pick -up WH and I appreciate that-I do not use anything automotive in my boats- only anchor tinned stuff and crimps. i will change them-After I inspected them they looked fine- those in particular are the ground from the stuffing box/rudder to the strut to the motor. Thanx again for the observation and comment- they are always welcome- craig

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

well since its raining its ass off here are a few more-

first here is a pic of those screws that punched the hole in the fuel cell vent line- i have rerouted the hose so it doesnt come in contact with them but I need to put some chafe protection for the screws before I resecure the wires.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006224.jpg

Im getting ready to foam (uhhhggg) in the tanks in a few spots and am putting some wood wedges back in to keep the tanks/cells from shifting when the foam expands. The tanks are the same shape as the bottom so it is important that they stay in the right spot- this is the way they were originally installed- i could also strap the tanks down but havnt decided if its even worthwhile-

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006221.jpg

Here is the new fuel line and vent line from the tanks forward

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006222.jpg

Next is the inside of the transom cleaned up- the hose is for the remote bilge pump yet to be installed- it sux that there is no room for a standard pump but thats just the way it is- I am going to rig a "Y" valve into my seawater intake so I can use the motor to pump out large quantities of water if needed (hopefuully never) That aft pump is really not much good. water never gets back that far of any appreciable quantity- great design feature

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006220.jpg

Just a couple more pix before I foam them in and replace that deck- hopefully before that next tropical event (shhhh) maybe it wont come- knock on wood

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

I would atleast clamp the tank's in temporary.

Use some C-clamp's and 2X4's. Shim under the 2X4's to touch the tank top's. Install the clamp's on that shelf in front of the rudder post and foward of that too.

No need in taking a chance of them being shoved up. Then you will have a mess. :(

Re: Phase one of my could be major overhaul

update time- i foamed the tanks back in- rear hatch back in, fuel system hooked up and tied back in throuth the flowmeter. Throttle/tranny linkage all rerouted and installed- the tranny linkage took me about 2 hours to get it right. One thing I did learn reluctantly is not to tighten down on the linkage connections all the way. They need play in the connections or they will not work. Using nylock nuts tightening down and then backing off a couple of turns did the trick. Hydraulic steering is hook back into the console but not yet operational, i still have to add fluid and bleed ,lol. I have most of the wiring hooked back up now- i have had a brain fart rewiring my float switch into my forward bilge pump for whatever reason- brain overload I guess, I have done it 20 times in the last 3 decades, i will get it. Oh also put the leaning post back aboard (getting stuff off of the deck in the yard= happy wife, lol. Still have some repairs I want to do to the base of the console and want to finish painting the rest of the deck- making progress but the days are getting shorter!!!

fuel system being tied into the fuel pump- i installed a piece of 5/8" chafing to the 3/8" fuel line where it came close to contacting the deck- in the small area this is necessary to maintain the 90° vert on the gas flowmeter.I still need to put a stay tie around the chafing to secure it to the fuel line- one of those "loose ends" ,
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006226.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v4...ild2006227.jpg

I havnt yet had time to vac out the dirt and leaves trying to accumulate on me. Heres an image of the tranny linkage that was tough to get right- (the fuel side/throttle was easy, lol.

thanx guys- strick- i wish that was my "mansion" but its not- but there is a 74- 23 i/o sitting on a lift right beside my boat, lol. his "little" sister he calls it.
Chuck- the lines are indeed as clean as they come, one thing i really love about this boat is that with the console placed somewhat aft of center, I can fish around bridges etc in all kinds of running tides, running and holding the boat in place, bopping along from piling to piling while holding the rod and fishing at the same time- not an easy thing to do in other boats and pretty much impossible in any cuddy boat.Pretty nice when the fishing season is pretty much year around here and some of the best fishing is just starting, lol.
Chance- Yes , I have some water intrusion in the transom but it doesnt sound as severe as what you describe. As long as your transom can handle the hydraulic ram and trim tabs, i dont think it is a big deal at all. see y'all and thanx again for the nice comments, craig

Otto- your welcome, now get on it!!!P F Flyer- funny you should ask- it is Petit 1793 transducer paint (comes in a 16 oz spray can) I have always used that black transducer paint that aint woth a sheet on my ducer before. A friend of mine bought a whole can for his ducer and gave me the rest- like 16 bucks a can or something- he used about 2 seconds worth. Anyways after doing my transducer i noticed the can also said for underwater metals. So I gave it a shot, a couple of coats on all my underwater metals, lol. Very thin goes on easy and dries quick. Time will tell how well it works, i really dont know. Figured it cant hurt to try it though. Something else I am trying is putting woody wax on my shaft- 1 coat of insulator wax followed by a thick coat of fleet wax. thought being as hard as that stuff is to get off after it dries good masybe it will keep some life from growing on it. who knows- give er a shot. I'll let everyone know if either one work. I hate redoing the bottom every season, major pain in the as$, but it still beats trailering in my book. just hop on and go. craig :)
