Bling on the console

OK here's the story

My top mounted helm was 15 years old and giving me some fits so I snagged an undermount model on eBay.
Jason made me buy this Gucci wheel by Gem Products. I made a teak pad to house the helm, fluid fill tube and cover the old mounting holes. I also had to get a new trottle cable so I figure I would ditch the old OMC plastic binnacle mount and match the wheel with a push/pull polished Kolbelt control. With a few ajustments and everything seems to be working perfectly

Here's some porn:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...lcontrols2.jpg

I had to construct a wedge type block to accommodate the throw of the trottle.

The power trim switch was mounted along side the trim tab rockers.

I finished flush mounting all electronics within the locking console slides

capt_chuck,

Super! Really Nice. What is the green material bordering the louvered doors, and is it the same material that is around the switches and some of the instruments?

Yeas all the same except the gauge tray is fiberglass. They were cut from PVC board and applied with 4 coats of 2-part urathane paint.

Re: Bling on the console

Chuck, that helm came out incredible - very "Palm Beach".
Don't know if you remember meeting at the 2004 rendezvous in Newport; I've got the '78 Sceptre "Water Rat". Was thinking of redoing the helm on my boat in similar fashion. Question, what type of stain and coating did you use to obtain that color and look?
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris

No stain. I used 4 coats of Signature Finish "Honey Teak" Sanded with 1200# Wet/Dry after and buffed out with 3M "Perfect it"

Here's the URL: Honey Teak

I'm confused here Warthog :D
The wedge you see is a new pad. It was constructed out of PVC board & Glass over top and painted. I was hoping it would give the appearance of a molded in piece of the console. What did you have in mind....

Re: Bling on the console

He may have been thinking wood. Hey Chuck I have to say you have the nicest looking helm on any of the 23's I've seen That boat has class written all over it. Thanks for sharing. When is the 300 zuke going on? :D

Re: Bling on the console

I bet that wedge makes the throw on the shifter more ergonomically correct too. Wouldnt want to sprain your old your wrist  :D :o

Yes, More Mahogany. :D

From the pix, I throught it was just a piece of Starboard. The addition of the wood under the helm, almost dictates that it be wood under the throttle too.
