Re: Bracket Project
Chuck's been helping me make a bracket. I got into a little mess after doing some nice glass work . . . I guess I didn't properly catalyze the first layer of glass and the tub of the braket got all fk'd up when I broke open the mold. It's gonna be lots of fairing to make it pretty, but I've got two sides somewhat faired already. I'm hoping it'll be ready by turkeyday.

Re: Bracket Project
nice job guys- keeps the pix coming- are you going to add floatation to it???? How much does/will it weigh???
|
Re: Bracket Project
Bigshrimpin....that looks great. Makes more tempted to try that myself....although I want a twin bracket. My questions would be...how did you determine the dimensions???
Especially the height to mount it on the full transom and the height at the rear of the bracket??? |

http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...5238_Small.jpg The dimensions were tough to figure out. Luckily strick had worked through it before. This bracket will have a 26" setback. Supposedly you need to raise the motor one inch for every 12" of setback. So I made the bracket 23" tall which gives me a 4" gap at the bottom for the hull drain plugs. 25" + 2" (to account for the setback) => 27" = 23" (bracket height) + 4". The width is 38" b/c that was the width of the fiberglass fabric I used. 13 degrees is what I measured for the angle of the transom. When I calculated the positive floatation . . . I got somewhere around 400 lbs (depending on the final weight of the bracket. |
Re: Bracket Project
Sorry big, I'm a little thick. The engine mount is higher
than the front top of the bracket....so is the top of where the engines mount now 27" above a line from the keel back?? Or is the bracket 23" high at the front?? I have a stainless marine aluminum twin bracket, but I really like the idea of a fiberglass bracket. This bracket is also flat across the bottom and I think a V bottom bracket that matched the transom deadrise would give more flotation and look better too. I like your gallery of photos.... |
Re: Bracket Project
bayouboy - you got it. The top of the bracket (where the motor bolts on) will be 27" up if you drew a line from the keel back.

Re: Bracket Project
Big, do you want to give a laminate schedule?
|
Re: Bracket Project
Will you glass on the top/swim platform??? I couldn't tell if strick's was glassed on...

I thought we would see some more progress with the holiday weekend?

like fellowship said.. very impressed.

Re: Bracket Project
How much to get one for my 20'? :D
|
Re: Bracket Project
Hermco - I've got a new found appreciation for your work especially after screwing up the first layer of glass (not using enough catalyst). A small mistake like that set me back weeks.

Re: Bracket Project
After some motivational coaching from strick . . . I got back on the horse again this weekend. Strick helped me build up the low spots and I got the first layer of mud on the outside. Here's a few updated pics of fairing work . . . So far I'd say it weights about 60lbs . . . that's just a guess. After I finish fairing I'd say it'll weigh close to 700 lbs. :D

Looking good Big...I can't wait to get started on mine....but I have some logistics to solve first.

Re: Bracket Project
What's that I spy in the back of the pickup? A Kodiak. :D

Re: Bracket Project
Boy of Boy, Bigshrimpin got his act together. He even got a Official Bracket Building Worley Gig Bracket Stand specially made for this project. Looks like we all need to step back grab a Beer shut up and just watch the man do his thing.

Re: Bracket Project
Yeah!! Pay attention cause I'll be done in no time . . . that little $35 engine stand allows me to mud 5 of the 6 sides w/o much effort. :D
I'm sure Strick's gonna get some use out of it too after I'm done. |
Re: Bracket Project
Hopfully I'll be able to skip the mudding part but it will be great for laying up the stringers and building the swim platform. Looking good there Big.

Re: Bracket Project
Does look like a Kodiak....
And I really like that engine stand to hold the bracket... |

Re: Bracket Project
Spent today at Strick's doing arts and crafts with bondo and clay . . . The swim platform mold just needs to be waxed and it's ready to go!!

Re: Bracket Project
Bobby it's just some epoxy that he rolled on it. Two coats sanding after the first will make it smooth. More pics to come from Tim soon. We just finished laying up the cap tonight.

Re: Bracket Project
Just made it home . . . I'm still dizzy from the resin. I forgot to bring my camera today . . . so here's some of chuck's pics.

Re: Bracket Project
There is nothing that compares to the resin high! :D You gotta love it.........
I can smell it now. See ya, Ken |
Re: Bracket Project
Ken - It was BAD. I left a roll of paper towels in the back of the truck going home. There was a 60ft "quicker picker upper" tail on my truck . . . didn't even realize it until I pulled into a gas station.
The pic above is the first of 10 layers of glass. I love 18oz roving!! The two layers of mat were real tough to get on (and get the air pockets out), but after that everything got a lot easier (I'm sure the fumes helped a bit too). Somehow the pail of resin seemed to just give and give. I thought for sure we'd run out, but we started with 4 gallons and there is still 1.5 gallons or so left. The last layer went on beautifully. I'm very happy with the results of the layup . . . can't wait to break open this mold. Thanks again Chuck!! |
Re: Bracket Project
Nice job. What kind of clay did you guys use this time for the fillets?
That first pic looks like on of my daughters art projects from nursery school. :D |

Re: Bracket Project
On the transom cap I used both those shown in the pic above. Do not use the oven craft clay because it is water based. The Super Sculpey clay is nice to work with because it is kinda like wax. I've used other oil based clays and they work ok. Just dont use the water based stuff. Tim used bondo on some areas of his swim platform and he had good luck. He put down tape so he would not make a mess. You sometimes have to sand the bondo or run a light layer of clay over it to make it smooth.

Re: Bracket Project
Bobby - here's the layup that I used for the Bracket Tub.
2 layers of 1/2 oz mat 2 layers of 1708 8 layers of alternating 1/2 oz mat and 18 oz roving All corners were done with 6" wide overlapping 1708 tape. The bottom/side pieces overlap at the "keel" to there are essentially 16 layers over an inch of glass at the keel. The tub took about 6 gallons of resin. The swim platform part took about 2.5 gallons I'm gonna core the platform, so I'll probably use up another 2 gallons of resin. The widest part of the bracket was 38" (b/c I had 38" wide 1/2oz mat). The engine stand would have helped a lot during the layup. http://www.wellcraftv20.com/gallery/...010003_001.jpg |
