In-Hull Transducers
 

I am wondering if anyone has used these on a 23? How have your results been? I have a traditional transom mounted ducer and cannot get readings at anything over about 10 kts. I hope that by going to an in-hull type I will get better results.

I appreciate any opinions!

I have a thru hull on my 23 Tsunami- Love it- I really beleive you get better readings with a thru-hull- just my 2cents

I put my transom mount transducer in the bilge and it reads fine at all speeds (no hole through the boat).

Between the motor splashback, trim tabs and vertical risers, it can be tough to find nice clean water on the transom. A transducer left loose in my bilge worked very well (unless it tipped sideways). I needed to have temp too and wanted something a bit more professional and ended up with the tilted element through hull. It's alsmost flush with the hull bottom and reads at all speeds.

We glassed a tube inside the hull and installed the transducer in it so that the transducer was always in liquid. It worked fine. I've read that you can glue the face of transducer directly to inside of hull and it will work fine.

I believe only time you cannot shoot through hull is with a balsa or other cored hull.

Well, after giving it plenty of thought over this winter, I made my decision this spring. I will admit this setup "may" be a little overkill, but after much thought and a few too many shot's of OUZO, I decide that I wanted 2 isolated screens with the most redundancy in radar/chartplotter/fishfinder. Since I had already have a Furuno 7" NavNet, below is the main stuff in what I did;

- Sold my 1850WF on Ebay, turned the $$ in for a new 7" VX2 NavNet
- Installed an Airmar m260 1KW transducer in-hull
- Installed 2 BBWGPS antenna's for each NavNet on the hardtop
- Installed 2 BBFF1 sounders one set at 1KW for the m260, one set at 600W for the P66 transom mount
- Purchased a fiberglass shallow angled E-box from FASTECH
- Made a new dash panel out of starboard
- Installed an Icom 402 and Polyplanar MRD-60 with MA905 speakers in E-box
- Installed Icom command mic and Polyplanar remote to dash
- Made a new glove box cover out of Starboard with flush latch
- Installed BlueSeas #8261 fuse/switch panel
- Installed 2 Blue Seas 6 circuit ST blade fuse blocks #5025
- rewire, rewire ….. Rewire …

I have low hours running this setup over the last 2 weekends, and so far I really like what seems to be endless flexibility of the displays. I was aware that there could or would be interferences with running both sounders at the same time. They do interfere, at times, but I wired them to the switch panel so it can shut one off. The m260 seems to perform well(as it should for the $) it can hold bottom at WOT. I also stuffed the wiring to one side the inside cabin helm box on purpose, in case an AP pump decides to find a home in there also.

Sounds like what I have planned for myself this winter Nick, I am going to rip out the wooden box insert in the console to do a flush mount with CPG or Starboard. I am also looking to get a Navnet unit, thus the idea of an in hull ducer. Maybe I will look at the one you have.

WORK FINE. JUST MAKE SURE TO USE HIGH SPEED FAIRING BLOCKS FROM AIRMAR.

These are not thru hull transducer's. They are in hull. No fairing block needed.

Well, I grabbed a Furuno 582L online and I am considering the Airmar M260 Shoot thru, can anyone tell me how much this puppy is going to cost me? Is it a good 'ducer????

I have the 582 and a B-260. It works very well, but my complaint is the narrow beam angle. I run mine in 50hz all the time to get a wider beam angle than 200hz.

Airmar is aware of this and there is a new X-ducer being tested now. God knows when it will hit the market.

It is the exact same X-ducer as the B-260/M-260 except it is 24deg beam on both 50hz & 200hz.

I can't even find the imfo on Airmars site. I found it on THT.
