20' SF mods
Well im about neck deep in the restore and will be posting many pics in the future but im currently trying to decide what to do in the aft of my boat. I cut out the splashwell b/c the transom is enlosed with a bracket. I was thinking about building a box level with transom in between the two jumper seats. I was also considering cutting out the jumper seats and building a box, much like the back of the 23', all the way across the boat level with the transom. If I take this route it will only come out roughly 16" or so. Just putting it out there to see what you guys think. This boat with be a project boat for the seadek website and possibly being going to a few boat shows in the future so I'm have some pretty cool ideas and mods planned.

Re: 20' SF mods
Outstanding, can't wait to watch the progression.

Re: 20' SF mods
hey ive seen that red tacoma and that forklift before...

Re: 20' SF mods
How did she ride with the bracket on the back? Alot of people do not recommend that because it will dramatically affect the ride.
Can't wait to see the progress. I am restoring mine as well. |
Re: 20' SF mods
She rode well, the bracket is only 18" so it is fairly small. I like having an enclosed transom though. To compensate for the bracket and larger engine I will be moving the batteries, fuel tank, and center console forward in the boat.

Re: 20' SF mods
Well I made a little more progress on the boat. I took out the front fishbox and anchor locker so not I can get in a prep sand the inside of the hull and give her a good cleaning. I also cut open the top of one of the stringers to take out all of the old foam. I will be doing the same to the other stringer in the next day or so. When I cut the stringer I left a little lip all the way around so I can set some coosa on it and glass it back to the sides of the stringers. Just wondering if anyone can see any problems with doing it this way. I will keep updating as I go and any tips or ideas are appreciated. Thanks a lot.

Re: 20' SF mods
Maybe a horizontal "gusset" to prevent the sides from falling...just an observation from past posts. Some support to replicate the cap.

Re: 20' SF mods
Oh I have braces along the whole hull I just take them off while I'm in there working because they get in the way.

Re: 20' SF mods
Well its been a while but work is coming along slowly but surely.
It was slow at first b/c I didn't have a nice dry place to work but now I have that taken care of things are starting to move along. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/IMG_0249.jpg This is just the two part foam I poured in. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/IMG_0240.jpg After I got it all poured, I sanded it down even and then mixed some resin and filler to fill any voids. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/IMG_0250.jpg This is the first layer of 1708 going on the stringers. I now have them both glassed with 1 layer of 1708 and will post some pictures soon. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/IMG_0258.jpg Here is a picture of the cap. I cut the sides off so I widen and make bolsters with rod holders under them. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r...m/IMG_0245.jpg Thats all the pics for now, but I have a few questions. When I glassed the first layer of 1708 down with vinylester there are places when it didnt bond good. I was planning on drilling a small hole through the glass and with a squeeze bottle fill the voids with some thicked resin. Also I was planning on laying down 2 layers of 1708 the way that the picture shows above. Should I lay the cloth down different on the second layer so I dont create some sort of break point or will I be fine. Thanks for the help everyone and I will post some more updates soon. I'm sure many will chime in, so before its brought up I will be raising the stringers. Thanks again. |
Re: 20' SF mods
hobson,
You could alternate layers of 1708 and 1808 to get a 45^ change in thread orientation between layers. |
Re: 20' SF mods
Hobson-
Looks good. I don't see any need for 2 layers of 1708. All you did was cut the top off the stringers. Then you put the top back on and extended the glass down the sides of the stringers which will make the stringers stronger then they were originally. Why waste money and add unnecessary weight if you don't need to? If you are worried about the tops of the stringers being too thin then just add another layer to cover just the tops of the stringers. Keep the pics coming strick |
Re: 20' SF mods
Hobson,
Things are looking good. I have a quick unrelated question. When you cut the fish box out, did it have any foam insulation sprayed onto the bottom and sides of it. Also what year is your boat. Thanks -will |
Re: 20' SF mods
The boat is a 74 and yes it did have some minor insulation around it. I will be appling new insulation foam around the fish box and then coating it with a spray material similar to line-x in order to seal the foam and better insulate it.
