SeaCraft Emblem
I found a SeaCraft emblem, in new condition, not weathered or corroded.
Now, I'd like to make duplicates, I need 4. Anyone have ideas on how to make a mold? Someone suggested molding silicone....has anyone worked with silicone before? Any info will be greatly appreciated! http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...r/DSC00876.jpg http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...r/DSC00877.jpg |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
If you know someone in the Dental Lab field they could do it.

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Sand casting maybe?

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
If you get them made- I'd like to get 2 or 4 !! :D
Look in Heming's Motor News, - there are a bunch of casting co's listed in there. |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
I could use two or four also. Maybe we need to see who has the best looking 19 so we can all have comlete new emblems.

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
bump that....I'd take a few as well.

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Thanks for your info.
Research so far: Silicone mold (unfortunately don't know a dentist, but will check with local friends). I understand that silicone would then be filled with an 'epoxy' resin, and then emblem would be spray painted to desired color. This could be done by a neighbor who's very artistic & into things like that. Advantage, it would probably be the least expensive way for just a few pieces. Sand Casting, my research so far indicates that would make a textured mold...don't think we want that. Daytonamold: sent them an email with pictures & dimensions this morning. Waiting to see what they have to say about processing & cost. Daytona is only a couple hours drive away. Would love to find a 'local' place close to N. Palm Beach, Fla, as I would prefer not to trust the mail delivery system. If I can find a good process at a reasonable cost, then I'll be glad to share with anyone interested. Any feedback on the 'epoxy & paint' process or should it definitely be a metal casting? I definitely need all the help I can get as I would like to do it the 'right' way and have everyone benefit that is interested. Please keep the info coming! Thanks, Carla |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Speaking of emblems- any news on these? Thanks -Doug :)

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Different topic....but in the thought of molds...
if anybody does a transom job or gets a boat that had one and the HIN is gone or mangled....you can order a rubber stamp for about $10 with the HIN and use it as a mold to put in the glass.... |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Epoxy would be Very Brittle & the thickness would take forEver to Cure. If You do decide to go this way apply chrome film behind clear epoxy & thats what you see. But Believe me it'll be to brittle. Try A plastic injection system but your looking at a #'s game $$ & a lot of em!
It would have to be metal to last being so thin.Aluminum would be my way to go. Melt it into a mold & Polish. There are some Chromers still around.Motorcycle / machine shops can point you the way in your area. Brad |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
I have been working on it, and making little progress.
The contact at Deltona Mold did turn out to be too costly to make an injection mold ($15,000), so I've been experimenting with different products from the 'hobby' stores to make the mold. From the responses on this post, I'm estimating about 20 emblems, so trying to stay away from the expensive mold prep. If epoxy would be too brittle, is there an additive that would make it stonger? How would you apply a chrome film to the inside of a mold prior to pouring the apoxy? |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Its reversed! The bottom of the Mold is actually the top of the emblem.Couple of ways its testing & Timing(Cruicial).
Leave the mold inverted & apply the film on top when its almost cured & still tacky,2 Lay the film on a hard surface & invert the mold with resin on top of it,Press on the mold to seat the film. How bout a 3rd-Just mix a Fine Chrome metallic flake to the mixture the pour? It'll be shiny-Bet a Coon would play with it!First way is the best... But from eXperiance Unless Your gonna Monunt them on something & hang-em' on the wall They'll snap. They(original) look like the typical "POT METAL" emblems. Tug  Too bad Ya don't have another one??? I'd try a couple of things but don't want to jepordiZe the Original! |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
If you know a potter, I think you might be able to press it
into some clay and then fire it. Then use the ceramic "mold" and fire it again with it full of bronze or brass shavings. My babe does pottery and has a kiln. |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Capt. Brad,
I wish I did have another emblem as I would be glad to send it to you for experimentation. Your concept sounds interesting, could you PM or email me with a little more info? 1bayouboy, I used to do some clay work & actually have some clay. I'll try working with it today & see how well it picks up the detail. I really do appreciate all your ideas and input. Thanks. |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
You'd need to start with fairly soft clay, and maybe wet the emblem to make it release better......but my lady says it should work and the ceramic mold could be used with any softer metal......lead, brass,,,,

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Hey there, there's a fella on classicmako called Scott C who runs a plastics CNC shop. He makes swtich panels, place cards etc for mako guys, so I'm sure he can make something like that for you. Here check out a link to some of his work. Classicmako Hull Place Cards Classicmako Switch Panels/Builders Plauques |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
You need to contact a casting company that performs spin casting or lost wax investment casting. Those are the processes used in jewelry, art and other industries. They are suited to low cost reproduction of non ferrous metal parts.

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Carla, please count me in if you figure this out and do a run of these emblems. Thanks!

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
Steve,
I'll definitely count you in. I'm checking on all the suggestions here, plus more...lots of research!!! As I come close to a viable solution, I'll let everyone know. Thanks for your interest. Carla |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
NOT TO ADD MORE THOUGHT TO IT BUT WHAT ABOUT CNC ALUMINUM AND POLISH THE FACE. WITH THE EMBLEM YOU HAVE IN HAND IT SHOULDN'T BE HARD TO CNC A REPLICA AND POLISHING THE LETTERS SHOULD BE EASY. IT WONT BE CHEAP FOR THE FIRST ONE BUT AFTER THE FIRST ONE BUT THERE AFTER SHOULD BE MUCH LESS ?

Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Thank you for all the input given, resulting in lots of resarch.
Results - Plastic ones can be made for about $50/pair, $5 extra for color other than black, plus shipping. No minimum order. Stainless Steel ones can be made, 304 mirror SS, 1/8" thick, laser cut, for $55 per emblem or $110/pair, (incl $1 for CSC), plus shipping. Minimum order of 50 (or 25 boats). The emblem would change slightly due to the characteristics of laser cutting thru SS, no relief capabilities. The "SeaCraft" script would be the same, and two waterlines boxed in, dropping the 'Miami Fla'. This is a local shop, giving me a major discount to help make it happen. It would take approx 4 weeks from start to finish. Disadvantage, it would be one production run with the exact quantity ordered. Are there 25 boats that would order these? The SS would be more expensive, but then beautiful. I would be 'fronting' the money, so please respond only if your are serious. Thank you, Carla |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
You could count me in for a pair........

Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Hello 65, put me in for 1 of the ss emblems, I am partial to leaving the Miami, Fla letters but will take one with or without. If the concensus is to go with plastic, I;ll take two so I can have a spare. Great find!

Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Hey 65,
I would buy two of the stainless steel. |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
I might be interested in a pair of SS ones. Could we get an example of what they might look like. Maybe the CAD file from the laser cutter?
|
Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Thanks carla for your time. I'll take a pair of SS please http://images.zeroforum.com/smile/emthup.gif

Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Carla what are the dimensions of the plates? I am sure that I will want a set of the SS as well. Thanks for your efforts, Danny J

Re: SeaCraft Emblem-Update
Hi,
The size is approx 9-1/2 x 2-1/2 The CNC drawing will come when I give the guy the 'go ahead' and he begins the setup...after I pay him the set up fee. Looking at the emblem (1st page), there is a full waterline or waves if you will, that runs left-right under SeaCraft, and then a second one that is interupted by the "Miami, Fla". The second waterline (wave) will be extended all the way across, just under the first one. I've xeroxed the emblem, and are currently making the changes on the paper copy. Hopefully tomorrow I will have something to show. Timing? After there is a commitment of 50 emblems, then I will have the guy do the CNC drawing. When that's complete, I can show everyone the final drawing, and see if anyone else wants to add their name to the order. We've got a couple interested and I'm good for two sets, getting there! I appreciate hearing your thoughts, comments and questions. Thanks, Carla |

I would take a pair as well.

Re: SeaCraft Emblem
I am not being critical, I think this is a great project and thank you for putting in your time.
But a few more questions. When you say boxed in, will the water line be a negative space i.e. cut through so you can see what is behind? How is the laser cutter going to deal with the raised part, the bottoms of the letters? Will the boxed in portion drop below the bottom of the f? Will the finished product be polished? And I assume the mounting holes will be in approximatly the same location but through the letters somewhere. Thanks again for doing this for us SeaCraft lovers. Maybe we can get a Moesly to sign off on these as a limited edition OEM part. :D :D :D http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j1...r/DSC00876.jpg |
Re: SeaCraft Emblem
I have done a drawing of the emblem using Msft Word.
How can I get the word document to show here? I've tried copy/paste and also photobucket. No luck. Can anyone help me? |
