Need new non skid deck

Any thoughts on the best product to use in refinishing my deck? It's like a skating rink right now.

Thanks..

Re: Need new non skid deck

I'm also wondering what i'm going to use, although thats a while away,as i'm still ripping the rotted wood out of the transom.
My buddy just did the deck of his lobster boat with gel coat thickened with Cabosil. It came out looking great, almost factory like and is a pretty good non slip surface.
He rolled it on,and as it was applied, the action of the roller left little peaks that settled just a bit, leaving a nice rough finish.
I also was thinking of using either Durabak,or Sani-Tred.I got some samples of each, and the finish on them is super.
They are both urethane coatings, similar to the spray on bed liners, although they have a much better non slip,as you mix granulated rubber particles in with the coating.
They each come in several colors. The Sanitred seems to be much heavier, and is a softer coating. It is also pretty expensive, and has a catalyst and activator that has to be added.
Looks like three steps with at least two or three seperate coatings and cost maybe around $300.00 or more, for a 23 footer.
The durabak is cheaper and is a single part product, with the rubber granules already in it.Cost is about $80.00 per gallon. It would probably cost about $150.00 for a 23 footer.
Maybe someone who has used one of these can give us more information either good or bad about these products.

Bobby Wartman (warthog5) has used the durabak with mixed results I'm curious myself to know the final verdict on that stuff. I think they were mixing paint with it also.

I've heard there was some issues with the Durabak, but those have since been solved. Bobby's boat came out really nice and I ordered some Durabak to sample it, but it did not have the finish I was looking for so I opted for Awlgrip and Griptex for more of an OEM finish. The sand mix also seems to take a better hold for footing without bothering bare feet.

I used Interlux Intergrip 2398C in combination with Petit Easypoxy 3108 off- white. Rolled it on-The easypoxy matches the seacraft off-white very closely. The intergrip is awesome and i have been putting it to the test in the last month with everything from eel and fish slime to crab guts menhaden oil and blood and guts.Your ass wont slip, believe me. A little tough to clean but really no big deal. (I just need a stiffer brush).

Have had very good luck with Interdeck from Interlux (one part poly). I plan on using it on the 20' topsides after the hull/cap joint work is all done. I used Duraback on a workboat 3-4 years ago. It is a thick coating of ruberized non-skid if thats what you want. I will not be using it again but I bet its still on that old Novi :)

Has anyone looked at Sea-Dek, great stuff, soft, non skid and apparently a very easy clean, install is not hard either seen multiple DIY jobs.

Tape was pulled up before full cure of the paint, otherwise it will entrap the tape and cause it to tear. The base is Awlgrip 545 with a layer of color, followed with "salt shaking" the Griptex, followed with 4 layers of Awlgrip over it to provide enough material so that it would provide a good wear resistance.

It is apparent that I got a bad batch of Durabak. Durabak has replaced the product, but no other labor and material's. :(

the surface has stayed tacky if you leave someing like a wrench lay on it for a few day's. It stick's slightly.

It's a pain to clean and doesn't look like you would want it to.

I did topcoat the Durabak in the cockpit with Awlgrip and it's holding up fine.

It's a ton of work to redo. It will not get redone for a few year's.
It does have gook traction to it.

Outstanding! I am looking at re-doing the nonskid on the 18SF. What prep schedule would you advise?

I also used the non skid grit particles not sure if it was awl grip or another brand but I used a mixture of fine grit and course grit. I used double the recommended amount and I mixed it with the two part epoxy paint and then rolled it on. Did a great job but if you do it this way you need to stur the paint a lot or the grit will drift down to the bottom and each roller will have less grit than the when you started the paint job.

Here is the way I did my decks.

- Sand with 180, wipe with prep-sol and applied AwlGrip 545 to everything.
- Sanded the entire deck and bulkhead area with 320 and applied AwlGrip Insignia white after wiping with prep-sol. Oyster white is a closer match to the Mako gelcoat, but it looks to offwhite for me.
- I then reverse masked the parts I wanted to keep white with plastic and paper and came within 3/16" to where I wanted the non-skid to start. I then used fineline tape to give me the nice clean lines where I wanted the nonskid to white interface. It is important to use tape specfically for this type of taping.
- I then sanded the entire area to be non-skidded with 220 grit and then wiped everything with prep-sol.
- This is where the process of putting the nonskid starts. Spray one light-medium coat of Awlgrip and use a can to sprinkle the Griptex. I used fine (middle of the road) and it has a nice grip to it without being obnoxious on bare feet.
- Sprinkle the desired amount and let it set into the Awlgrip. I then sprayed another coat over that about 5 minutes later.
- Followed with another layer of Awlgrip 30 minutes later.
- Followed with another layer of Awlgrip 30 minutes later.
- Removed the finline tape about 40 minutes after the last layer of Awlgrip. The was getting pretty dry at this point and I wanted the tape removed while the paint was in it's "plastic" state so it would come off easily and non tend to pull more paint off at the interface.

It came out to my liking, but I did experiement and sprayed a couple test panels until I perfected the approach I used. I would suggest you try the same so you are comfortable doing the entire deck.

I do not want to totally highjack this thread. If you want you can check out the project

Did you use anything to even an even sprinkle of the griptex...??

I used the peanut can with holes punched in the bottom and it worked great. Since I did some test panels (before the boat) it was very easy to sprinkle an even amount on the decks. This was the first deck I had ever done and it came out better than I had expected. If I had done this without first doing some test panels I'm sure it would be a mess.

The can was held about 24" above the deck and moved back and forth in strokes of about 12".
