18 SF Repower
After years of faithful service, my engine has given it up. Wondering what people are running on their 18's? Current setup is a 100 HP Mariner, would like to move it up to at least a 115, maybe a 150? All input appreciated.

Re: 18 SF Repower
I'm running a 130 Yamaha 2 stroke, 358 lbs. and it seems well suited. My Dad has been running a 150 2 stroke with over 400 lbs. seems good too, but it is stern heavy-he is looking for a smaller motor since his ocean runner died. Another good used 2 stroke under 400 lbs.would be my recommendation due to ideal weight set-up

Re: 18 SF Repower
Part I's 1987 18 SF originally powered by a Johnson 112. Slightly underpowered. Repowered around 2002 with a freshly rebuilt 1995 Johnson 150 (not sure of the weight). Beautiful power match, however he recently added the "ball" scuppers, and is very satisfied. Hope this helps.
What is the weight of the 140 hp Suzuki 4S? That'd be my first question. I only own OMC 2S's and a Yamaha 4S. Don't think I could go back to the 2S but we all know the transom problems of these beauties. Part II. |
Re: 18 SF Repower
The 150 Johnson v-6 makes the 18SF fly. If you have good scuppers, the speed is noticably better than my 130 Yamaha . The 140 Zuke would be a great match too if you have the extra $$.

Re: 18 SF Repower
Yes Snookered, you are correct. With single operators and light fuel loads my brother and I run very competitively. But being the smaller, older brother, after many ass kickings, the 20 MA will run him down. The 175 2S OMC matches quite nicely, as well.
Hey, do you know Briguy from your area? A frequenter of Beer Can along with a friend of mine from the Whaler site. Plan to make a rendevous, hopefully this spring with the 15. I spent many months there on Manatee Ave. opening the original Manhattan Bagel. Peace. Mike. |
Re: 18 SF Repower
Mike-hooked up with Briguy a few times over the last few years. saw him at the yacht club New Years Eve afternoon when I was out fishing with the kids. I met your bud from the Whaler site once @ beer can when he and Brian were there in his Whaler. count me in on a get together. My mortgage bussiness is on Manatee Ave since 1999.

Re: 18 SF Repower
Your talking about "Bigshot" right?
|
Re: 18 SF Repower
If you can find a deal on a good second-hand 130 Yamaha 2-stroke like Snookerd spoke of, that would be nearly perfect. That was the last engine I had on my 18' and it seemed built for that boat.

Re: 18 SF Repower
Weight is still an issue so I would stick with 2s. Mine had a 115 inline Merc and was pretty good but could have used a tad more. A 115 ETEC seems like it should be a great fit, those V6's are going to be real heavy 2s or 4s.

Re: 18 SF Repower
Yes, Snookered. BigShot, now username is The Judge, after purchasing a late model Pontiac Grand Am, is Nick. I e-mailed, actually forwarded him something sent from my best friend in Jersey, and Nick saw the initials of the sender. Asked if it was a guy he went to private school with in Jersey and he had it right. I have yet to meet him. He is an officanado over on the Whaler site. Hope to use my aunt's place in Long Boat for the Beer Can gig. Mike.

I have a '78 SF18 and it's got a '98 Ocean Pro (evinrude) 150 on it. It's a very sweet combination. The great aspect of the 150 and 175 V6's were that they were the Eagle Series motors. They were 60* V instead of 90*, and were listed at about 360# dry weight, some 75# less than the 90* V, 200 and 225 HP motors. They were designed to be considerably lighter than the regular V6's. The 60 degree block is smaller and more compact which yields the bulk of the weight savings, but even the bottom pan of the cover is composite as opposed to cast aluminum. If you can find one at a good price, it'd be a great way to go. Darlene |
Re: 18 SF Repower
bigshrimpin-Used the 1991 130 Yamaha today on the 18SF. It will not die. The 1996 motor you found has the stainless parts that mine does not have (shifter shaft is the big one). Electronics and compression are flawless after 15 years. That 1996 motor is a very good deal.

Re: 18 SF Repower
It's very tempting, but I just bought 2.5 more Merc outboards this week.

Re: 18 SF Repower
I think we need a thread on how many engines each of us own..........

Re: 18 SF Repower
Mike,
My office is on St. Armand's circle. Look me up and we can grab lunch or a beer after work. 388-1009w or cell 544-7400. I'll tell Nick you said hi. Also he has a Pontiac GTO not a Grand AM. |
Re: 18 SF Repower
I bit the bullet and put a 115 etec on my 18 and its just the ticket. I don't run folks off the river, but its great on fuel and low noise. Weight issue not a problem. Trolls well. So far so good. Now lets wait a few years......

Re: 18 SF Repower
Sounds great for weight -375lbs or so. Thats a good fit with the ETEC. Bet your @ 125 -130hp at the prop. Any idea on your top end? Good luck......

Re: 18 SF Repower
I am helping my Dad put another motor on his 18SF. We have found twin 03 135 Ficht's (same as Generaider's) that may be sold, but the owner is willing to split up motors if not sold by Friday. They offer a great option for price, BRP quality, fuel burn, ect. Weight is the 427 V6 block - a little high, but great power. There has been lots of speculation that the ETEC 135 will be out, but when????

Looks like you already did the homework and the 03's will be good ones. Hope the repower works out smoothly for you. Darlene |
Re: 18 SF Repower
Darlene- Thank you. Now I have to talk my Dad into getting it. That is the hardest part. The engine is here in Bradenton, so I could pick it up here and drive it across the state to Jupiter (FL).
