Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Here are some pics of the hull of my 79 inboard w/ decks and transom removed. I intended to get started 2 years ago, but contrary to my previous posts, I decided to wait until I had the funds to do it all at one time. A professional will be doing the transom/deck replacement, painting, and repower. I got it to where it is now and will be doing the console, some other fiberglass modifications, wiring, and rigging.
http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Stern_2.JPG http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Bow1.JPG I will post pics as progress is made. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Sick!
If you get a chance, give some more details. What are your plans for power? |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
The power is a 240 4 cyl Yanmar diesel. As for other details its the usual list plus a few other things I wanted to do. The deck will be raised with oversize scuppers, paint entire boat, new tanks, modifications to the console, livewell in transom, new T-top, etc. I'm actually moving the engine and console forward a little over foot to make more room in the aft cockpit area.
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Your off to a great start.. who's doing the repower work? Down Jersey? Holtz's I can't wait to see the numbers with the Yanmar..
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Moving the console forward! Modi and I have looked into that a bit. An extra foot at the stern would be awesome. I'm very interested to see this. Any ball park numbers for the yanmar? cruise, peak, GPH?
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
awesome!!! what tranny are you using? how far are you from NYC? i would love to come and check it out since i am doing something similar. just cruious but what does a 240 yanmar cost these days?
how rotted was the deck when u pulled it? are you going to recore the transom with wood or something else? |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Don, are you in the office? I'd like to talk to you about an idea for the T-Top and console. I actually called a couple of times but got your machine. Didn't leave a message, I figured you may be on vacation.

Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Ralph...Give me a buzz some time Sunday at the shop.

The estimated numbers are 30 mph @ 2,850 cruise burning 9 gph and 36 mph top end. Don't know what prop size yet. My old carburated Crusader 454 cruised around 27 mph at 3,100 burning about 24 gph turning a 17x17 prop. The top end was about the same. We'll see but at worst it will increase my range by more than 2 1/2 times. |

The decks were soft. I don't know how rotted as I just cut through and removed them in sections. If they were anything like my hatches, they were rotted. The transom was wet but not pulp. The inner layer came out easy, the outer layer I scored with a circular saw then it was hammer, chisel, and beer time. Marine plywood and epoxy will be used for the decks and transom. I live just southeast of Philadelphia around exit 3 of the NJTP. Not much to see now. The boat is going to the boat yard on Feb 1. If you want any specific pictures while I have it apart let me know. Go EAGLES !!!!!!!!! |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
It's been an interesting 9 months. Without getting into details, KATE is in the good hands of Young's Fiberglass in Marmora, NJ finally getting the attention she deserves. The Yanmar is at Holtz's waiting for the body work to be done.
Anyway,I wanted to post some progress pics of how things are going. Test fit of engine (not going to move it forward, won't work, but it sounded good at the time) http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...e_mockup_3.JPG Bottom has been soda blasted, patched, faired, and barrier coated http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...rrier_Coat.JPG New transom and stringer risers in place with test deck removed http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...ew_Transom.JPG Test fitting of deck and transom cap. The rear liner is not going back and the ice/bait wells are being removed and covered. The deck will go to the transom on the sides (you can see the skin applied directly to the transom). The scuppers will go directly through the transon eliminating the need for tubes to the liner. The middle area will have a cover to hide the rudder, tank fills, and other stuff mounted to the transom. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...it_Transom.JPG Console modifications - extended visor around the dash area (hard to see) and I conerted the flip up storage box to a drawer. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...nsole_Mods.JPG That's it for now but work is moving fast. Will try to update at least weekly. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
nice job, looks like you are doing her up right !!!! keep the pictures and reports coming, im verrrrry jealous of the Yanmar!!!!
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Ralph-Great progress pics and comments. Was the forward 1 foot idea not feasable? Very nice ;)
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Nice looking boat Ralph. Can you post a picture taken from the bow overlooking the engine compartment, trans, shaft and the rudder as well as the steering ram area? Also can you get a close up top view of the rudder campartment and steering ram compartment if it's seperate? Thanks for your help. Aloha, Greg from Hawaii
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Thanks for the comments guys
Snookered, moving the engine forward would be nice but it just got too risky since I'm not doing all the work myself and I couldn't get everybody on the same page. The Yanmar fits the old mount footprint exactly and it's just too costly to reinvent it. I still think it's a good idea but Mr. Potter put it where it was for a reason so i'll stick with that. 26, I will post whatever pictures I have of the area but the rudder support is not rebuilt yet. Let me know what you want to see as it moves along. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Ralph-Makes sense with the same footprint. Your documentation on the project is the one of the most detailed of the 23 diesel inboards on CSC to date. Thank you.

Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Looks good Ralph.. I was wondering how it was going. She's gonna be a pretty rig when its done.
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Looks good, the Young's did my boat in and out several years ago and we still talk once in a while. Dan actually called me yesterday and mentioned he was working on a 23' IB. They are great guys who do qaulity work. Don did my handrail which came out great. I considered the Yanmar initially but ran out of 'double secret slush fund cash' at the time.:..(although my divorce has now cost more than the Yanmar...so what was the point of that little bit of useless self control : )....but I'm not bitter...
You are in good hands.Keep us posted. Good idea to drop moving the console back...thats a major CF. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Here's some update photos of the progress. Both shots are of the bilge. The outward compartments are foamed and a PVC raceway is installed on both sides. The bilge is coated with an imrom industrial coating.
First shot aft showing the tanks installed. A sacrificial piece of plywood is laminated and glassed over on the transom so I don't have to put screws directly into the new core when mounting hardware. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...102507_004.jpg Second shot forward showing the engine compartment and raceways. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...102507_005.jpg Deck should be going in next week. Jeff, Dan showed me some pictures of your rig. Very nice. I'm very sorry to hear about your self control...no secret slush fund here...everything is full disclosure ;) |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Update pics your amusement. Gettin there.

Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
I made up the dash for the console. It will attach inside the visor area and will actually be cut into two pieces divided at the center post and attached with cap screws so each side can flip out for wiring access. It really sucks trying to get up in there from the front or underneath the console with the engine in the way (like working under the dash of a car or getting a root canal).
I wish I had time to do more of the project myself but at least I can use a little of what I have learned on this site. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...110807_006.JPG Mold http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Dash_001.jpg Layup http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Dash_008.jpg Dash piece http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Dash_010.jpg |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Here's the latest. Will be less than 2 weeks now. The remaining prep will be done today and painting will start next week.
Overview. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/IMGP2725.JPG This is a shot showing the deck extended to the transom on both sides. I wasn't sure how it was going to work out but it looks like it will solve two things I didn't like. The scuppers are now direct through the transom, there are no tubes or fittings and they are bigger and alomost 2" higher. Equally important, it provides much needed toe space at the transom corners. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/IMGP2727.JPG I took the console home to my shop to complete. Next steps, T-Top then power and rigging. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
I like those corners.....
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Paint!! Unbelievable, it's a new freakin boat.
The cap and rub rail will be installed next week. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/IMGP2736.JPG http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/IMGP2735.JPG Cockpit with non-skid areas taped out for application today. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/IMGP2737.JPG |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
By the way, thanks for the comment bayouboy. I really wanted to try something not done before. Hopefully this has some real benefit.
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Looks awesome Ralph!! i really like the color too.
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Lookin Good!!!!
The corners look good to. FWIW Parker does there drains the same way and it works good. The only difference is it drops down off the deck about an inch into a little depression before it goes out the transom. Color looks awesome. Nice Job can't wait to see it finished. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
That boat looks great. Those scuppers give you four less connections to go bad.
Are you going to put any non-skid on the cap-if I didn't have it up there I probably would have taken a few dives by now. It looks might shiny and slick. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Thanks for the encouragement guys.
I hear ya with the non-skid. I'm not a big fan looks wise, but for safety I planned on putting it in two locations on each side - between the rod holders near the transom for boarding/unboarding and along side the console/T-top as I stand there for acces to the top and outriggers. I'm leaving it off the bow for now. What do you guys think about color for the console dash? The rubrail will be black w/ SS insert and black for the boot and graphics. I was thinking the dash might look good in light blue to match the hull (guages are black). Also looked nice in the Duratec gray (in picture above) or maybe flat black. Or should I just stick with white to match the console? Need some opinions |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
oops, I never posted a picture of the primed dash panel. You got to use your imagination on the white console part for now.

Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Ralph,
Your boat looks great! Nice job. For the dash, you could get a unique appearance with a carbon or silver carbon type of woven fabric. something like this: Fabric or this: L-SIM I just did this last weekend on one of my dash (glove box) panels for my Tsunami. I still have a little more work left on it, but it looks fine. I think I will coat it with the signature finish to give it some UV protection. Jim |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Jim, I like the black fiberglass. Which did you use? Did you lay it in the mold to start or apply it on the surface afterward with epoxy?
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Ralph,
I had some scrap pre-preg (epoxy already applied) woven carbon graphite (black) around, and I was just experimenting with it. The stuff I used requires an oven at 240 degrees and under vacuum. I don’t have an oven for that stuff, so I just spread out some epoxy over it and sucked it down with the vacuum (not required, but it helps). That stuff from the Netherlands looks pretty neat, but I don’t know if they distribute in the US or if you could buy just a small amount. The cloth could be used just as you would any other fiberglass. Coat your board and then lay the carbon or whatever on top and saturate that with poly or epoxy. Use an auto body spreader to remove any excess. I’m not sure about what would be best for a top coat. I think the epoxy needs some type of UV protection for durability (?) |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Done at Young's Fiberglass except for boot stripe after she's splashed and painting console (if I'm ever done with it), great guys and a great job.

Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Frank:
She looks totally mint and the Youngs did a great job. Love the 'Ice Blue'. Keep us posted on the Repower job...you've got me thinking about that again...I will be very interested to find out your numbers and prop spec's. I assume you stay with 1.1/4" shaft??The Yanmar rep at the NY boat show wasn't 100% sure on that when I asked, but I assume he was figuring on the bigger 6 inline. ? |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Quote:
The shaft is going up to at least 1 3/8". I'm going with 1 1/2" if it will work. My strut is fabfricated stainless steel so I'm having a machine shop remove the existing barrel and weld on a new one. From everybody I talked to, 1 1/4" isn't enough. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
The last time I looked at this it was the 240 hp 4 cyclinder Yanmar, several sources 'thought' the 1.25" would work and not have to re-shaft but was only a first look then....are you going with the newer in-line 6? How much hp?
Keep me posted! When will Holtz finish??? I may wonder south for the AC Boat Show. |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
It's been awhile but here's pretty much the end of the story. Still some stuff to do, but after two years, that's it until winter.
For those interested I ended up with a 4-blade 17x19 lightly cupped nibral prop from Atlantis Propeller. WOT is around 3,470 rpms (OK per Mac Boring). I could be slightly underpropped but I want to wait until she gets loaded up. I'm getting 30 mph at 2,950, 31.5 mph at 3,100 and 35+ at WOT. We checked the instrument tac from Yanmar and it's off by 200 rpm's high over 3,000 rpms. It' about exactly what I was told in the beginning. Here's some pics. I'm going fishing. http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/At_Dock_1.JPG http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/At_Dock_2.JPG Inside Console http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/dat...nst_Wiring.JPG http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Engine.JPG Console and Overhead http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Console.JPG The overhead and the T-Top would look better if somebody didn't plaster those Pipe Dreams Marine stickers all over the place. ;) http://www.myfishpix.com/gallery/data/538/Elec_Box.JPG |
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
That is very, very nice!
|
Re: Finally Started on 23 Inboard
Boy those antenna's sure are straight.... She sure is pretty.. Hey guy's.. I've seen this boat though the whole process and the work is top notch and very well thought out. Hats off to you Ralph..
