Seacraft Hull Design

I was on my kayak the other day and drifted past a 26' sailfish CC, I always pass the boat but going buy slow I noticed that legendary Variable Deadrise Hull. Hmmm......on a sailfish? what? Sailfish is not a crappy boat, but it's not Seacraft quality ANYDAY. They are nice n' all but what the heck? WHY ! Im sure someone noticed this WAYY before me, but I never have. Whats the story behind all of this? :D

It has been know for a while that Sailfish uses the sc variable dearise hull design, but what I wanna know is why don't other manufacturers use it also?

Back through the history of this site there have been posts on a number of boats that have derived their design from that variable deadrise hull. I can't recall all the brands off the top of my head but a little searching through here will bring up at least a dozen in addition to Sailfish.

All the sailfish guys want to say its just like a SeaCraft, but upon further review since I saw a pic of both side by side at the bow the Sailfish does not have the strakes in the bow section at all like a SeaCraft. Thats why you never get pounded, Carl designed the strakes with an angle to them, as the water comes off on entry it traps air which cushions the impact, damn cleaver guy that Carl. Can't remember where I saw that pic, it was recent and would like to copy it, might have been THT.

Thanks Capt Chuck, thats why you are the Classic SeaCraft Guru of Florida. There is a big difference in the bow area, its just not having a variable deadrise. I will copy both this time by the way that avatar drives me crazy, I have what it a couple times :D

One of my best friends was looking for a center console fishing boat last year- we sea trialed a 26 Sailfish-boat looks great- pounded like crazy, and fit and finish were sub-standard we thought.Just felt cheap- we then sea trialed a re-done 1978 potter 23 center console- he ended up buying the Potter built Sea craft for about half of what he was going to spend. If you look at the price tag on other center consoles in that size, you will find that the Sailfish boats are relativley cheap. You pretty much get what you pay for. They can try to imitate the Potter hull but are hard to duplicate!!!

Re: Seacraft Hull Design

Personally I think the Owner of Sailfish Boat Co. is a little strange regarding his logic about boats. Let me try to explain, approx 3 years ago I was at the Palm Beach boat show and the Sailfish display was in the convention center. SOOOOO “ah what the heck” I will check out their line and went over the 23 and 26 footers. There were a few things that I really did not like but the Variable dead rise and the Longitudinal steps I paid a lot of attention to. Their boat is a little wider than the 23 SeaCraft. Anyway as I was snooping abound the boat this nice man comes up and says Hi and questions I could help you with. So I say Ya, the hull design sure looks like the SeaCraft’s not knowing at this time who I am talking to. Immediately he starts slamming Seacraft’s saying that their hull design is No Good and when “HE” did the Sailfish hull it is way better. So I’m thing What??? Then he tells me that the SeaCrafts are really really wet boats where theirs are not and the reason is because they have a better sheer angle flair at and around the bow cap and they have wider chime and that’s why their boats are SOOOO much better. You would think if you take some ones hull design you would want to give that Co Credit for it not slam them for what you took. Anyway as the conversation kind a went down hill from their he asked me did I have a boat? And you can guess how the conversation went after that.

It looks to me like the Palm Beach 235 is a carbon copy of the 23 hull.

Almost. Not as strong in the stringer dept. Not hand-laid woven roving either.
