SeaCraft Bowrider \"CJ\"

Introducing "CJ", a 1966 SeaCraft Bowrider, purchased last summer by Carl, named by Jeanne. It was stripped of all 41 year old rigging. In September, Carla & Skip brought her to Palm Beach for restoration. She is not finished, but coming along nicely.

Opened up forward cockpit from the underside, found water & mulch. Replaced wood, capsulated in epoxy, resealed & glassed over the cut seam.

Forward deck also had a problem to fix. Again, replaced wood capsulated in epoxy & epoxied cut seam.

Installed new fuel tank replacing 110# SS tank with 20# plastic. Special thanks to Don at HermCo for his expertise and installation. Then C & J inspecting the prime job.

Thanks for all the compliments.
Paint is Interlux Brightside, FireRed on the sides, and the deck is Hatteras off white (which looks cream).

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!

WOW!!! LOOKS AMAZING!!! just wondering how much you were impressed after using 3M 3000 extra cut??? Just wondering about how much using it really cleaned it up?? Let's say, I had a couple of spots and didn't know if it would perfect if??? Did using it really clean it up?? Oh, and did you wet sand or just use the 3M????? Hope you understand what I mean!!!! Once again LOOKS GREAT!!!!! I will definatly be using Capt. Chucks method some time in my future!!!!! Thanks!!!

Wow Carla . . .That's an amazing paint job on "CJ". Did you decide on power yet?

65Bowrider 04-09-2007 08:22 AM

Re: SeaCraft Bowrider \"CJ\"

Finestkind, we tried just the 3M Extra Cut on a small area, but did not smooth out all the orange peel, so wet sanded 1500 & 2000, then used the extra cut. Buffed out real nice. Took two 5-hour days. Local painter recommended following up with 3M Regular cut. That plus wax took only one more day... and it came out even nicer.

BigShrimpin, almost got an engine on Ebay, but lost in last 10 sec. Then got email from Ebay about the seller being banned! wow....scary. Just before the end of the 7-year warranty promotion, put a deposit down on a demo E-tec 115hp, 2007...lightweight, quiet, punch of a 2-stroke, w/ 7yr full warranty. They're holding it for us. Hope that works out ok.

Nice... very nice!! being an owner of a 1967 19 also, I can really appreciate the work that is being done to the boat. The red looks great. How did the fuel tank work out? it looked like the fill was pointing the wrong way? Hoping to redo mine one day, but for now she's still standing tall..

Re: SeaCraft Bowrider \"CJ\"

Beautiful work Carla! What an inspiration! I'm interested in how you replaced that wood under the forward cockpit area; mine needs it too. There's not too much room to work under there though. What kind of wood did you replace it with? I'm imagining using a piece of 1/2 or 3/4 plywood presealed, then wedged up under there to relaminate.

Re: SeaCraft Bowrider \"CJ\"

PipeDreams, yes, the tank fill is pointing the wrong way & we'll have to loop the hose, but that'll work.

RockDoc, you're right, not much space to work! Used drummel tool to cut the underside skin, the aft half. Used 1/2" sealed wood, liquid nails on both sides of wood, then quickly supported bottom skin with pre-made grid system & added flat weights on top of cockpit floor putting pressure on both top & bottom skins. Added fiberglass stips over cut seam. Now she's rock solid.

This week we're putting all the 'pieces' back on.
Thank you for all your words of encouragement.

Re: SeaCraft Bowrider \"CJ\"

GREAT looking paint job! May do same to my Seafari some day but too busy enjoying it right now!

I think you picked the OPTIMUM motor for that hull. I considered 115 E-tec last March, but they weren't available at that time, so went with 150 E-tec, which is way more power than needed, with top speed about 50 mph! Optimum cruise (per I-command gps spedo)is about 25 mph/2700-2800 rpm/5.1-5.2 mpg! At that mph/rpm it may be even quieter than a 4-stroke which would have to rev higher to develop enough torque. The 115 should burn even less gas! I finally concluded that weight is a big deal on 19/20' hull, because the OB's Carl probably designed them for back in the mid-60's (I-6 Merc & V-4 OMC) were about 300 lbs. If you put a 500 lb 4-stroke on the back it just won't be as well balanced as original.

By the way, I live less than a mile away, up on Robin Way, so stop by sometime and we'll take a ride in mine! Look for green truck & brick paver driveway; boat is next to house behind fence. DKB

Bushwacker... yes, we're almost neighbors! We'll definitely come by some time, would love to ride in your SeaCraft!

"CJ" is almost ready for the motor, maybe next week?...
I'll take more pictures & post soon. I'm very pleased how the 'classic' look is coming together!
