Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
The boat got a new 25 inch transome with extra gussets for support, a new fiberglass leaning post made by me out of a formica mold custome, I raised the console to be able to mount new chartplotters, new 60 gal tank , new 15 gal freshwater wash down, the front compartment on the console (seat) was turned into a cooler with 2 inch foam sheets, new Awlgrip inside out including in the hatches, new rub rail, basicaly all new except an old 1973 Seacraft and a 2001 trailer , and if you dont know its a pain in the !!! to put pictures up on the forum. I hope my pictures and ideas will inspire someone else to restore a Seacraft. Jose

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Forgot, Im also haveing new light gray channel cushions made with a black welp around them for console backrest & seat leaning post and two seats by the engine if I ever find an engine at the right price, Thanks again for looking at my junk. Jose

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Nice, looks like quite a productive six months. With that high console you will definitely be able to dodge any spray while flying through rough seas!! What power are you planning for her?
|
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Its a split decision between merc. or yamaha 225 or 250 hp no less, not that i need to race its the fuel economy you get from big displacement outboards on little boats, I run engines about 3500 - 4000 rpms and I want a 40 mph cruise

BTW, let us know if you'd recommend your cushion fabricator(presuming they're local). The wife is threatening boycott if the comfort factor does not improve soon!
Thanks! |

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
glassman,
I have 225 EFI Merc 20" shaft on my 73 20' and it is far more than enough. In cool weather and good water im at 69 mph with 2 guys and 3/4 full fuel. Word to the wise it will start to walk on it chines, be careful. But you can win some races that is for sure!! |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
jwclbi, the chine-walking is fixable several ways, but the simplest way is to attach two 2"x6"x .5" honeycomb-brass grounding plates on either side of the keel line about 18" forward of the transom and about 9-12" apart. You'll lose only about 2 mph, but the boat becomes a LOT more stable.
I did this back in '84 to a 20' MA that had a 2.4L 240 hp Merc on the back. It dropped from a top speed of 73 to a top of 70-71, but rode rock-steady in a light wind-chop. I did the same thing that year to an early Checkmate 18' that was old-style, ie; no pad, just V hull all the way back, and it steadied it out, too. Besides, they're great for your electronics in case of a near lightning strike :D |

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
YHWH. Amen & Amen.
From Mark 12, translated from the original Aramaic: "one of the scribes ...asked him, “Which commandment (do you say) is the most important of all?” Jesus answered, “The most important commandment is this, ‘Hear, O Israel: YHWH our God, YHWH is one. And you shall love YHWH your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” " |

i agree with hermco- your personal religous beliefs should be just that- personal. You did a Heck of a nice job on your boat.

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Hey FIBERGLASSMAN i don't mind you sharing religious beliefs, keep up the good work and keep posting what u got.
|
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Gent's, I did not plan on turning this into a religios discusion, just turned out that way, but you can rest assured I wont touch that subject again, we live in a secular nation and I know there is no need for that in this forum. Once again I apoligize for any inconvinience I have coused any member. Jose

"For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. (1 Cor 1:18 NKJV)" I didn't want to hear it either, but God has ways of getting one's attention that are hard to ignore. Anyway, you were right that it is a boating forum and not a religious forum, so I will not say any more but that the boat looks great, especially the hatches. I was just pondering Gemlux vs Southco pulls/latches but now I have another option. I am almost tempted to buy one of each just to compare, but they don't give the little buggers away. Fiberglassman, did you use the 2 1/2" pulls or the 3 inch pulls and did you have to build new hatches or did you make them work with the originals (I am only a couple weeks into the work on my 20 SF). Nice color btw. Also, those indentations in the rear seat boxes... Did you build those for the motor steering system or were they original to your boat??? Do you mind if I ask what rub-rail you used? Frank, not to derail the thread, but I almost fell out of my seat. 70 MPH in a Seacraft 20 !!! I'm gonna feel like a slowpoke with my old 115. I might have to check with BigShrimpin and see if he has any mods for it. |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Fiberglass man, you are doing a nice job. Nice looking work.
Glad you found your place in life. As far as religious beliefs, This is still a free country, And the currency we all carry. Still says! "In God we Trust"! :) When that goes, I go too! I took no offense. See ya, Ken |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Nice work! What are the awlgrip colors you used.
strick |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
The colors on the boat are snow white, top and bottom, and whisper gray on the sides, with a jet black boot stripe all Awlgrip. The latches on the forward deck are 2 1/2 inch, I just reused the exsisting hatches on the forward deck , as far as the transome the only thing I did was cut the cap off, remove and replace wood re laminate and put it back together now at a 25 inch hight instead of 20 and put 4 big gussets to help strengthen transome on the inside in conclusion no other alteration was done to the back of the boat.Jose

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
The rub rail is a Taco metals rubber rub rail model V11-4014
1 5/8" tall with a 1/2" inch black rope insert.jose |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Those twist latches keep your hatches from slamming up and down in the chops, and I think they even got them with locks, so if you leave your boat in the marina then thats the ticket.
|
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Oops.. duh... I feel pretty stupid now. My boat has those indentations too. I wonder why I had not noticed?
Thanks for the info!!!! Yeah... I had noticed that the hatches need something to hold them down. My rear hatches fly open while trailering too. I haven't even had the boat in the water yet to see what they do in chop yet. I can't wait. We've been getting beat for so long I won't know what to do with myself if I don't feel like I have gone a few rounds with Rocky Balboa after a short trip across the bay. We won't be able to do fun stuff like get thrown out of the boat 10 miles out and watch the boat keep going because Dad wasn't wearing the lanyard or watch my friend fly overboard after a particularly wicked wave. Actually, that is a good thing. We're getting too old for that kind of fun. FGMan...So that is a gray on your boat? Interesting color. It almost looks like a shade of blue in that lighting. God Bless you and thanks for sharing!! |
Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
Have a cushion made for the back hatches and back rest and have a strap from the cushion fasten to the bulk head there under the hatch and that will keep that hatch from flying open. Jose

Re: My 20 SeaCraft after 6 months work
What is the black trim around the anchor locker and the rod holder cutouts? That looks great, and I would find something like that myself.
It looks great and also like it would cut down on the abuse of the glass edges in those areas. |
