Well I guess now that you’re a professional we will expect a lot more out of you. Maybe I should test you on just one nautical terms.

Why does a ship have port holes but no starboard holes??

Re: The MASTER is back!!

Simple answer .... :);

web page

"Portholes

Sometimes, novice seamen will ask, "how come holes on the starboard side are called portholes instead of starboard-holes?" Many old salts are ready with explanations, but actually the name "porthole" has nothing to do with its location. The word originated during the reign of Henry V of England [1485]. It seems the good king insisted on mounting cannon to large for his ships, and therefore the conventional methods of securing the weapons on the forecastle and aftcastle could not be used.

A French shipbuilder named James Baker was commissioned to solve the problem, and solve it he did by piercing the ship's sides so the cannon could be mounted inside the fore and aft castles.

The French word "porte", meaning door, was used to designate the revolutionary invention. "Porte" was anglicized to "port" and later corrupted to porthole. Eventually, it came to mean any opening in a ship's side whether for cannon or not."

Congrats OUZO on passing the masters exam! Did Jimmy take the upgrade with you??

I am dropping off my paperwork at Coast Guard Group Boston this week. I think getting all the paperwork together was harder than passing the exam in December.

Thank's Ed,

Congrat's to you also!!

Jimmy was not interested in the Master Upgrade. As history shows in the news recently, Greeks are not the best captains :(

We do OK when it comes to fishing though ... ;)

A. The "Ships Flower" is located on the bridge. The center of the compass card is called the "Rose" Used to take relative bearings on landmarks or Ships ;)

Hey Spidercrab,
That must be some STRONG web you have! I see some of it in the picture you posted. I never knew that "spidercrabs" spin webs, but you obviously do! Thank your mother for using the web.

Isn't it amazing what we all learn on this site? :o :o :o

OK, I have one for all you nautical wizards. Give me the defination of "poop". I think it was in deck general section of the OUPV.

This should be an easy one for Spidercrab.

Re: The MASTER is back!!

I always thought that the poop deck was the deck that the deck hands took a Poop from but I was corrected by I believe it was Don Herman of Hermco. If I can remember correctly he said it was for the Dainties (what ever that means) where is Don when you need his professional input about important stuff like this.

OK, I have a better one. How'bout "coxcomb"? I know what your thinking but it's not something Spidercrab carries around in his back pocket.

Re: The MASTER is back!!

Here is one for you. What marine history does the word [censored] have???? ------------ In the days of old, manure was transported by ship to sell as fertalizer. Ships were exploding for no apparent reason until someone figured out that the cargo was getting wet in the bilge and producing natural gas as it fermented. Loads were stamped S.H.I.T.--Ship high in transit. Hence, manure started to be called [censored].
