Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
What size stainless props are you guys with 250 Yami's running with on a 23 center console. I'm not turning the desired rpm's with my 19' pitch and am considering dropping down to a 17" but dont know what diameter to go with. I can get my hands on a 14.25 x 17 stiletto but am unsure if this prop would yield the desired results. Any suggestions?

As you know, my 250hp is not a Yami but I'm slinging a 14 3/4 x 17 SS Viper. WOT with 1/2 fuel 5800 rpm's trimmed ;) |

On the surface the 15.25 dia. on the prop I found seems a bit too small. Do you agree? |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
14.25 / 15.25 dia I'm lost here Rich. I don't know what your asking :D
IMO. send a PM to Father Frank, if he doesn't know he'll know who to ask :D |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami

Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Im no expert but I can tell you take Chucks advise and talk to Frank.I made the mistake of reading a post he did a few weeks ago after I bought a prop trying to get more RMPs.I to went from a 19 to a 17.I did not get very good results because my old prop was 13 3/4 diameter and new prop was 14 1/2 and the new prop was alumiuum and old SS.Franks post said I think every 1/4 inch you go up in diameter is like adding 1" pitch.the alumium made a factor not in my favor. again im no expert but I have been told to to get a matching diameter SS prop {13 3/4} by 17 pitch. I hope this helps.Keith

Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Forget the stiletto . . . "Mirage Plus" (not plain mirage) or another good stern lifting prop. Everyone told me this when I was trying out props and I went through 6 or 7 different props. I ended up with a mirage plus . . . it's a great prop for seacrafts (keeps the bow down). I ran a stiletto when I had the FICHT on the boat . . . I hated that prop b/c it shot the bow up to the moon out of the hole . . . even with a permatrim.
My old Merc v225 goes bu-bye this weekend . . . so I put up my 19 pitch Mirage Plus in the for sale section, but I think you'll probably need a 17 pitch with your setup to turn recommended RPM. |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Having tested about 5 different (brand/size) props on my OX-66 250hp Yam I can tell you that the Yamaha Saltwater Series (15.25"x17p) was the best on my 23CC.
I still have a Stiletto 19p that I keep as a spare - the Stiletto is a good prop for the money and with a light load just cruising around it's OK.. does not quite turn enough RP Ms with a heavy (fish ready) load. The large diameter 17 pitch Yam. SWS could not be beat at mid-range esp. in a heavy sea. If you get the chance pick up a Yam. SWS prop and compare it to say the stiletto prop.. the SWS are beefy and extremely well built with cup all the way around the tips of the blades. They are a bit pricey but in my opinion worth the money.. Best of luck.. |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
The Yam. 17p SS 3 blade is working for me, 5400 WOT. If you buy from a local, reputable shop they will usually have several to try.

Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Absolutely stick with the stern-lifter. I suggest the 15.5"D x 17"P Mirage Plus or the 15.25"D x 17"P SWS Yammie, or the 4-blade 15.25X17 PowerTech UN200. All have heavy blades, and near-circumferential cupping, which is good to have in rough water, or when nearly surfacing the prop. The Mirage is about $500, the Yamaha is about $25 less, and the PowerTech is about $675.
Michigan makes a SS 4 blade stern-lifter in a 14.375"D X 18"P that lists for about $300 I don't know how well it compares to the others, though. |

Fr. Frank
since I have a 15.25 x 19 Yami Saltwater series now, can I get it re- pitched to a 17?? |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Dink - Use ebay or swap with someone else on THT.
|
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
Dink - the best option would be a factory original but any "good" prop shop can usually change the pitch of a S.S. prop by one step (2") either direction (higher or lower)..
I have had pitch changes made on several props and worked find.. Good luck.. |
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
You'll probably make some money switching from that prop to a 17 mirage plus on ebay . . . Just thinking out loud.
|
Re: Prop for 250 2 stroke Yami
No. You can repitch a SS prop no more than 1/2" without seriously weakening the blades.
