whats your Top End on 23s
I have a 23' Sceptre with a 200 Mariner 2.5 carbed...no bracket or hard top(pretty much factory weight) I don't think I have alot of pitch on the aluminum prop as it gets out of the hole very well.
My GPS says I am going all out 36-37 mph close to 6000 revs. I am curious what other people are running and topping out at in any 23' configuration (sf,mf,cc...bracket or not. I am thinking of a bracket and an E-tec 250 or Suzuki 300fs but this motor is a great runner! Please add any info...thanks, joe |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
Twin 200 Yamaha 0X66's, running at around 55 MPH @ WOT

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
Your boat looks awesome...I am thinking of the same color scheme with Awlgrip. What do you have on for props.
What would you estimate a 250 E-tec will doe on a Sceptre with a bracket? |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
I would guess that you could get somewhere between 46 and 48 mph with an ETC 250.
I am using Yamaha SWS props (21" pitch and 14 & 7/8 diameter). Also, I just moved the engines up 2 brackets. |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
I'm low 40's w/250 2s Yam., bracket, (probably mounted too low) w/17 Yam. ss prop., 1/2 tank, calm, best conditions, etc. I will have more HP at re-power, for what that's worth.... :D

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
'05 23' Seacraft twin 150 yamaha HPDI's, props spun in, 14 1/4" x 21 Rapture props, manual 6" setback jackplates, group 27 AGM batteries, water bladder, oil tanks moved forward of console and below deck level, full fuel (146 gallons), 53 mph at 5300-5400rpm/ 28.5 gallons/hr total. 40mph at 4000 rpm/16 gallon/hr; 45mph at 4500rpm/19.5 gallons/hr; Before moving weight forward and lower and jack plates had the boat at 56mph when light on fuel, squirrely ride/not smooth in rough seas/had to be going >30mph to get or stay on plane
|
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
did you try spinning your props out prior to current setup?i first setup my sceptre to turn in, but would only run about 56 got alot of transom lift but would bury the bow.got 6 mph and made it maneuver real easy could not make it
go anywere in close quarters on one |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
when i first bought the boat, it had batteries (group 24) an oil tanks inside the console, and yamaha sws 19 pitch props turned to the outside, the 19 pitch 15 1/4 dia. sws manhandled the boat; if i trimmed out even slightly after getting on plane i had to use a lot of tab to keep the boat from porposing, this was also with no jackplates. the jackplates were bought primarily for the setback; 2 reasons: 1. engines would hit inside splashwell if trimmed and turned/more splashwell room 2. wanted the engines in cleaner water; thats a lot of power doodlebug; what props are you swinging? i plan on posting pictures for the website soon

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
Chris-
Are you having problems with the Suzuki? Hopefully, it is not something serious. If you need help...call Scott at Viking Marine (Jason's buddy). He has been maintaining my Suzuki for the last 3-4 years and it runs fantastic (knock on wood). Good luck. Ed |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
i'm running a set of 24 pitch 4 blades i got off ebay
made by stern driver but i have no holeshot also have a set of 19 pitch 4 blade powertechs comes out good with those but loose about 4 mph on top end and about 6mph at cruse. |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
i borrowed a set of old mirage 14 3/4 x 21's and ran them, i love them, they make the boat ride better, better hole shot, but seem like a little too much prop when fully loaded, only getting about 5200; they have surface rust and sand marks where someone tried to clean them up with it looks like 80 grit sandpaper, i'm going to wetsand/polish them and try again; i was wondering if anyone knew the difference between the mirage and mirage plus? is it only the vent hole or are there other differences?

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
My old '74 Tsunami with '88 225 Johnson and 100 gal of gas topped out at 36-37 mph at 5400 rpm with an OMC 14.5x17P stainless.
Previous owner had it rigged with twin Mercury 140 inline 6 O/B's with Mercury Trophy props, size unknown. He said he got 42 mph for WOT trimmed out and light on fuel. Sounds about right. |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
Mine now is running 47mph (DGPS) with just me and a 1/4 tank of fuel. Loaded fish ready with 4 guys I am running on average WOT 44mph. Currently swinging a 17p Yam SWS prop. on my OX66 250hp.
When my 250 Yam was brand new (just after break-in ;) with no t-top and about 5gal of fuel) I hit 53mph (GPS) swinging a 19p stiletto. I had the tabs full up and was running in a river trimmed to the max and the ole SeaCraft felt like she was chine walking... The 19p was pretty good with a light load but I could not get up into the recommended RPM range with a load swinging that prop. FWIW - According to my floscan at WOT I am burning between 27 and 29gph.. so I do this VERY infrequently now days.. |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
Is that transom mount or bracket??

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
My 20' has the 150 merc, and runs about 38 tops. I thought this was a little sluggish. No?
I was thinking of changing the carbs out and making it 200 hp. But then I would burn gas even more! |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
If you have a 150, and are running 38 mph, you're doin' okay. The 150 and the 200 are different blocks in most years. You can upgrade a 150 to 175 by changing a few parts and making a few adjustments, but you can't just change the carbs and get 200 hp. I have a 150 xR4 motor that was remanufactured with a variety of parts to make it better, and I was thrilled to get 190 hp. My Seafari 20' will top out at in the high 40's even loaded for fishing.
I have decided my next motor (2 years to go and counting) will require a transom modification like a flotation bracket, and will be a 4-stroke 250 hp Suzuki. I have put my bartered deposit down on a left-over 2006 from a local boat mfg., and will be paying it off over the next 2 years. It will cost me $8100 including controls. |
Re: whats your Top End on 23s
, expensive! But worth it~
Ok, so lets say 175. Would that take a beatign on my gas tank...or just really improve my performance...or neither? Ive topped 35-36 knots. Thats actually 40-42 mph! My bad on the 38. I guess Im happy with the speed but I like to have plenty of power..... |

Re: whats your Top End on 23s
1989 23WA w/89 Merc 200, low 40's. Test sheet when I bought it said 44 MPH running 14 1/2X 17 Alum prop. I am running 14 1/2 X 17 stainless Merc/w slight cup and am getting about the same results. Don't run WOT @ current gas prices. Cruise @ 4200 rpm @ 32 mph on rippled water.
