Looks good youngone. Are you re-using the old outer transom skin or building new?

30+ year old transoms provide fantastic mulch don't they? :D

Re: transom rebuild

I don't mean to rain on your parade but you are going to have a hell of a time glassing the seam on that transom. I would have left about 3" of existing transom from the edges to give yourself something to feather grind and glass to.

Re: transom rebuild

Hermco - When you leave the 3" border of old transom . . . do you dig out the old wood around the edges or just leave it be?

Seems like if the perimeter wood is dry and in marginal shape it'd be "ok" to leave it be . . . correct? or should you just dig out everything and fit a bunch of pieces in like a jig saw puzzle?

Re: transom rebuild

For best results I would get it all out and if you cut the top cap you can slide the new core in as one piece and not have to "jigsaw" puzzle it it.

Removing the core from the outside saves you from cutting the cap or liner. :D

Hermco - are you saying that pros leave the old wood in there?

Re: transom rebuild

I don't know how the pros do it. I cut the outside skin approx 3" from edge, remove old bad core, dig out any wet, rotted, loose core from edge, add 2 1708 biaxial to inner skin, backfill edges with putty, glue on new core with a 1.5 oz mat,add outside laminates and finish.I do not reuse the old skin. :D

Re: transom rebuild

If you leave three inches around perimeter...how do you get it in? (curious...planning a rebuild this off season).
I am a carpenter with a little glass expirience, I want to put on a bracket and fill in the transom. I am only apprehensive about doing the detail work like the baitwell and the edges and hatches. I will research this site further when the time comes...seems there is alot of good info on here.
But when it comes time to finisg the glass work...do you sand down and skim with filler to make it smooth?? (whats a quick discription of a good method)
thnx joe

For the answer to your first question read the post above you again but this time more carefully. The answer to your second question is yes. The quick description would be "Lots of sanding and fairing." :)

CHAINSAW  Yup note the cheap chainsaw, puzzle pieces of marine ply, lots and lots of epoxy putty, and oh yea duct tape :D

A while back Hermco posted a job on a Grady(?) he did for a friend. I copied that method. So far I am pleased.

Joe - when building a baitwell . . . build a mold out of MDF and you don't have to deal with all the finish work. When you design the part make sure that your seams are on flat surfaces (b/c it's much easier to fair and finish flat areas.

Nah, I caught it from your Sears catalog. When I was down at your place you slipped it in your bathroom magazine rack and I mistakenly picked it up. Man was that thing worn out...and sticky.

I did this with the online help from Jimmy Anderson of Jimmy's Marine Service.
