Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Nice work. Nine months is hauling on a job like that. Matching Seacrafts in that last pic  What brand steering wheel and how did you make the center hub?

Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Christian,
Glad to see you figured out how to share pix of the 23. It looks awesome. The chopped motor well looks sweet . Was you Dad's boat @ McDougals in the spring? If so that is a nice inboard 23' too! Cheers |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Wow.. Nice work. That one of the few 23's that was restored where the motor is still a shorty. But I think we have a new king of Gucci.. that storage box cover with the Compass Rose is the bomb.. That just smokes the Gucci wood work of Capt. Chuck.....

Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Thanks for the compliments guys.
The steering wheel was a friend of mine's. It came off an old Merritt. The center hub was cut from a piece of mahogancy then sprayed with black engine paint with a coat of varnish over that. Moving the transom splashwell back 10" is a huge difference. It allows for a lot more room to fish but keeps the original look to the boat. My dad's 23' is kept at MacDougall's in Falmouth. His boat is next to go under the knife this winter. |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Wow, Nice Job! The wood dash came out great. I have the same blue seas switch panel. My knees bump it once in a while and I wish I could find some type of guard to prevent that. Did you remove the front seat or did the boat come like that?

Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
The front seat was removed because I felt it took up to much room and was hard to open. I use a cooler for a seat and had some cushions made for the backrest. The doors are bifold and open forward.
I haven't bumped my knees yet... |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
CValle,
Great looking boat. The side shot of the boat in the water at a dock - is that Vineyard Haven Harbor in front of the Black Dog? |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Maybe I missed it. However how did you move the motor well back? Did you section it? Take 10 inches off the back? Or ??
Very nice work. |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
ScottM,
Good eyes. That's exactly where it is. Another morning run for breakfast with my daughter. |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Yup. We cut the stern well about 10" and then moved it back and reglassed it. This allowed us to maintain the original shape but gain more room in the stern for the livewell. I can e-mail pic's if you like.

Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
re, Vineyard Haven harbor - I thought so - I'm quite sure I saw that boat on a trip to the Vineyard last summer.
Nice Work !! Bill |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
Wow!
Did you rent a shop just for the project?? Cool BigMike |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
CValle,
Can you provide a few more details about the great looking wood work on the LP and the dash? Did you use solid wood, veneers or ply. If you used veneer (single or multiple sheets), what was the backing material and what adhesive did you use? |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
dcobbett,
I used solid 3/4 inch mahogany for the leaning post and the dash. For the wider dash piece on the left, I expoxied two pieces together with a scarf joint. I had to cut relief cuts in the back to get it straight. I then put a coat of epoxy and 10-12 coats of varnish over the mahogany. I have more pic's which I can post. Christian |
Re: RESTORED '79 PIC'S
CValle, what is the leaning post; was it original, pre-fab or custom? It looks great.
