1984 23 floor project

Bought this 23 at the beginning of summer. The transom is closed in and the floor was redone. Kept noticing some cracks appearing in the flor in various places so we decided to check out the floor, expecting to find rotten wood. Found the actual plywood in floor was in great shape. The floor was not secured to the stringer system at all. This was causing flex and cracks. The floor we removed was on top of a lip left from the original floor. We plan to install the next floor on top of the last one for future 4 stoke engine. Will be getting some advice from knowledgeable boat repairmen on what to do next. I'm assuming these are the original fiberglass stringers. I've included some pics. Any suggestions are welcome as we plan to take the winter to complete. Our thinking is to glass strips of marine plywood on top of the stringers level with the bottom of the plywood we plan to install for the floor. Pic of last king fishing trip. 9 kings biggest 35 lbs.

Re: 1984 23 floor project

It looks like who ever replaced the original floor filled the boat with foam. You technically do not have a bilge in that boat. In my opinion this is too much foam. Water will eventually find it's way into the foam and stay trapped in there and then you will have a water logged boat much like the old whalers. They even filled the raceways (seen in the second pic). Dig out some of that foam so you at least have a bilge and then replace the floor like you have described by building up the stringers and you will be fine.

Re: 1984 23 floor project

Thanks. That's what we were thinking. We are in the process of removing as much as we can. Have already seen some wet foam in the back area. Will keep some pics posted. The job they did on the transom is perfect. The work was done from a guy that works for Jupiter Boats. Will be covering over the baitwell and installing a good quality hatch to reuse.

Re: 1984 23 floor project

The past couple of days I have cleaned up all the foam so I could see what I was dealing with. Had a buddy come by to help point me in the right direction. I believe I am going to cut out what seems to be the rolls of glass, seen in pic, and put in some ribs, from the hull to the stringer and eventually to the new floor. Putting in some 45 in the corners for water drainage. Then, thinking of putting some glassed in 2x4's cross ways, every 2 feet, to tie the new floor to. Fill in holes with new foam where I dug it out. Plan on keeping the baitwell setup and putting smaller lid on and filling in holes. Put some news rigging tubes in and start sanding this thing top to bottom, bottom paint also. Any suggestions or comments are appreciated... Maybe by April it will be done....

Re: 1984 23 floor project

The past month I have had the bottom sode blasted and put in all the ribs and screwed the floor down. Fixed the holes in the baitwell in the floor. Patched the holes where the thru-holes were. Filled in the holes where a metal strip ran around the liner. Fixed the fishbox drain. Replaced gas lines. Cut out part of the liner at the transom to make it more flush and clean looking. It was where the original boxes met the new transom enclosure.Had the floor glassed in today by a buddy of mine. Should get it back Monday to start sanding and fairing the whole boat.

The floor has been glassed in... Any one have recommendations about tying in the console... It does not have a lip or anything... I had to cut it out because it was glassed in previously...

Wow, that's just downright amazing.
I admire not only your workmanship, but your patience as well.
My wife would kill me if I started a project on our boat like that.
Kudos to you!

Thanks El Capitan.... This is the first time tackling something like this.... Plenty of stuff to do... Going to set it on some blocks and stands tomorrow... SANDING....

These are the new hatches across the transom and cut out the hole for the livewell.. Sanded the bottom and faired it out.. Ended up not being that bad.

Your working conditions look similar to mine before I had the shop built. It's tough working in the dirt. Looks like it's coming along nicely. Did you build the hatches? keep the pics coming.

Re: 1984 23 floor project

Thanks. Yeah even a cement pad would be good, but its getting the job done. Tha hatches came from a local marine surplus store. They usually have what no one else does. Paid less then it would have cost to build them, plus the time. Hopefully another two weeks of sanding then to primer.

Re: 1984 23 floor project

The bottom and sides are all sanded and faired out ready for primer. By Saturday will have the rest of the inside sanded and faired. Pics of new scuppers.

Finally got some primer on the inside.. Been out of town lately and just have not had time to work on it much.. I have some more primer coming to do the rest of the floor and where the jack stands were. Going to roll the boxes with some kind of paint a friend of mine recommened, can not remember the brand. My plastic blew up in the back of the boat this weekend and dropping from my oak tree staind the transom and the hatches. A little sanding and they will be good. Now I just need to sand the guide coat off the inside. I believe I am going to run my switches up to my electronics box. Alot of wiring through the top but I think it will be worth it. Gets them out off the way. A Northstar and a Furuno and Clarion head unit will flush mount on the console.

This winter, my son and I are going to tackle the same project on our '77 Sceptre. She could use some love right now, but since we just got her, we're going to fish her hard and then restore her!!

Send me a PM, I am from NC and am going to be back in NC during July on vacation. I am from Morehead City and would like to check our your boats. I am finishing a 23 Sceptre top off refurbishment. Looks like the guys in SC won the Big Rock again. I am going to have to get a fishing team together to stop this.

Well, you probably know my boat then, if you're in Morehead...that's where we got her from...Carteret Comm. College Foundation. The day we bought her a guy offered them $500.00 more than we paid and we were already doing the paperwork :D (man told them that an older 23 SeaCraft was the best fishing boat he'd ever fished on) Anyway, she's not pretty (right now) but I hope that with some guidance and luck she'll be beautiful again!

Sure thing man.. Thanks again for printing the name.. It fits really well with the boat..
Took the boat out Sunday afternoon.. So far so good.. Hit 48mph with a 225hp.. Not bad.. Of course she is light right now.. 1 week and two days after I got it from the paint guy, she is rigged and ready to go.. I didn't want to put it in the water bad did I.....

Re: 1984 23 floor project

Here are some pics after I put the outriggers on and all the gadgets.. Had a buddy cut me out some names for my switches.. Having the switches in the electronics box worked out better than I thought.. A little long to hook up but worth it.. They are out of the way.. We stayed at Cape Lookout for the Fouth weekend.. Got a little nasty on us Saturday night. Look at the tent where we had to tie it down to rebar.. Wind blow a good 25 to 30 constant with I bet some mid 30s gust.. A little scary.. Hoping the tent did not blow away and my boat did not suffer damage.. With both anchors out it was taking them side to and the waves would hit the side of the boat and spray would go well over the T-top. 5 hours later and at 5am finally got some sleep..
