post your livewell setup!

Would like to see what you all are using for a livewell setup. Factory? Custom? Above deck? Anyone using an above deck oval livewell as a leaning post (i.e. hammerhead)? Thoughts on this setup on a SF20? Would love to hear about rigging, pumps, overflows, and photos of course!

Thanks,
Evan

Hey EBM,
Are you local? if so pop over to take a look.
I cut my in deck livewell out. Everything became clear. All my thru hulls are out and drying. A little slime and a tad damp , but the wood is solid. I `m putting a 40 gal oval under a shortie leaning post, and putting my seats on top. You want the plumbing in FRONT of the well to avoid problems. Think Yellowstone. I`m gonna run an 800gph rule w 1 " hose and 1 1/2 drain. The drain is a 90 * so may need 2 thru the top of the coffin and out the existing transom thru hull.

Should I fill the other 2 thru hulls or re-install bronze thru hulls w/ rubber plugs for emergencies?

Please tell me you are local and can help me post my porn.
I got a card reader and still need help.

Re: post your livewell setup!

I have a 76 23 footer with the motor on the transom. When I re did my boat I removed the old live well that was mounted on the transom. Then I build a 38 gal oval type one just behind my seat below deck like you see on the new 23 Seacrafts. I use a scoop to pick up water with a cut off valve and 500 gal. pump to put water into the tank. I have a over flow hose mounted approx 4-5” from the top of the tank which is the bottom of my deck to drain over flow water out. I also have another hose and cut off valve to drain water out of the tank at the end of the day. The scoop is located in my bilge area and the two drains are going through my transom very close to my bilge drain plug hole. It works well for me and on small boats if you can put some things under the deck all the better. I really don’t know if this would work on the 20’ because it seems that most guys that re do a 20 raise the floors because of the weight of the newer motors causing water to come into the boats through the scuppers. On my 23’ “if” I ever converted it to a 2 engine boat (adding that additional weight) I would probably have to change my live well into a fish box instead. Then close off the transom put in a flotation bracket make a new live well above deck putting the tank against the transom or going with those new live well seats.

There are some great older posts on this topic.

I need to do something on my 23'. I have been thinking of buying one of those kodiak oval shaped livewells and putting it under the leaning post.

I have one unused seasock on the bottom of the boat (under neath the hatch directly behind the leaning post)and am wondering if I can hook a pump up to it and then tap into my bilge pump setup to discharge the water.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Peter,
On my 20 I installed a clamshell pickup facing forward mounted 9 " port of the keel to help protect it. Ball valve on top. Rule 800 gph on top. Also has a feed for washdown.I wouldn`t compromise the bilge pump. Use the in deck livewell transom thru hull for the drain

Re: post your livewell setup!

My first SeaCraft had a livewell in the floor and so I knew when having SeaCraft #2 redone that I definitely did NOT want that hassle again. I didn't want to have to pump water out. As such, the two compartments in the aft corners were raised to gunnel height and one is the livewell, the bottom of which is at floor level. After fishing, I pull the plug and the water from the livewell runs right out the scuppers. No pumps to go down, etc. Here's a few photos:

Post deleted by SpidercrabHeez r pics of da hole rig, i puts all gether and runin. My peepaw help me wit the dezine. gits som of dem 55 Gal drums, a tiny swim pool pump, i then maks a fhilter sistem wit bait. drum "1" is for da bait then drum "2" is fer water fer da bait. bait water sits in da drum "2" so that da cloridine fumes leave outs in da air and then da timpirture iz da same as drum "1". now da the baits wont git shock and looz da scales. Drum "1" has da buckit over it and drum "2" iz da other.
meema makes da filtir she use ole gatorade botle full of holes. I put da holes in dar wit da head of a hot roofin nail. The botle leake lik hell and da water squrt out on the da bait lik an ol sow pig pisin on da flat roc. The 3 gal buckit is ful of da rivir rock. the botom of da buckit has 1/4" holes (i think 6) in it so da water dont fil ups and over flow it. meemaw sez put ole hose to it and hang it ovir da moter lik peepaw takin a leek
i hopes dis helps

I'm not quite there with mine, but I'm getting close. 800gph rule w/1" feeder, 1.5" overflow, and drain out below the waterline.

Disconnected the old livewell drain...rerouted it to the new kodiak well. Going to seal off the old in deck well...considering it is a serious hazard...and when the new well drains it fills the old livewell...will drill giant hole in old well(strait to bilge) so that is avioded if water does get in.

New kodiak is a Pro-flo 17 gal. works like a charm. But water will syphon out when you turn the pump off(Just close the check valve)and that is solved.

Any questions just ask, seems as though this is what you are referring to exactly.

Re: post your livewell setup!

Where is the original intake for the livewell? And is the general consensus to run a clamshell strainer style thru-hull---->sea-cock---->livewell pump? Threaded to each other, or plumbed with hose?

Ikan,

Any idea the size of your baitwell and what size pump are you using?

Re: post your livewell setup!

I put in a clamshell 5" behind the tank and 6" port of the keel to hide it a tad. Cut down the threads to 1 " , ball valve on top, and cut down Rule 800 livewell/washdown on top. You want it low to keep the pump happy. The clamshell will "ram" water through the well while runnin w/. out the pump. Those pump shafts will break so the valve is NOT an option, and fast access is a must.
