72 20ft started part II
here is the beginning of the 2nd post/thread. I think iam slowly figuring the pics out and posting protocol.I ripped up the "modified" deck around the fuel tank and think I found the missing lid/cover for the missing fish box (fore) here are the pics. Keep the comments coming.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
there was obviously some modification done to this boat before I bought it. Can anyone tell me the original height of the stringers?
|
Re: 72 20ft started part II
got alittle done today, needed a break. Going to start cleaning up hull in a minute. Sanded the gunnels and top cap yesterday.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
are you going to rebuild the fordeck back to its original? Looks like someone cut out the fish box from up there??
|
Re: 72 20ft started part II
kind of. I have a plan, but not sure if it will work. I want to put a fishbox in the middle, a small icechest on one side and small baitwell on other, with an aerator. Might take care of the "bucket", don't know if I'll be able to pull it off though. But yeah, the fish box was cut off.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
my brother asked me why I was pulling out all the foam. I said because there is water in here, where he replied, right here on top I said. Finally I had to say because the other guys did it. Don't know if I had too or not it seemed pretty dry down through it, but what the hell
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console027.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console028.jpg and one for the road http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console029.jpg adios for now |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
Good work getting rid of that old foam. Here's the bottom of my boat. Anyone notice a correlation between where most of the blisters are located (ground out now) and the location of the foam filled box stringer.
http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...s/DSC01385.jpg http://i91.photobucket.com/albums/k3...s/DSC01378.jpg As to weather or not to put the foam back in - thats very debatable in my book. |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
I am NOT replacing the foam that I removed!
|
Re: 72 20ft started part II
TO FOAM OR NOT TO FOAM? What is the general consensus? It seems, according to most pics that the foam is left out. For those of you completed with your projects and back in the water has it changed the ride or noise?
As one of the F.N.G.'s on this board, I was just wondering. My wife is getting really tired of this web-site. When asked why I am spending so much time here I just tell her " I MIS-REMEBERED" |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
center stringer waterlogged. Kept having water show up at transom and couldn't find out from where. Cleaned most or all of foam out, ground and brushed stringers...nothing. Drilled a few pilot holes in center stringer and water was weeping out around drill bit.
Do I need to plan on replacing it or will it dry out? http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console030.jpg another pic http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console031.jpg Oh, what would we do without projects? need some help here. thanks |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
I dont think that in the center is a stringer??? Mine has what looks to be the same as yours and it is a half peice of pvc glassed over for drainage purposes! I may be wrong??
|
Re: 72 20ft started part II
well your right, my terminology is a little off. This appears to be more like a 2x4 that has been glassed over, or used as a mold. There is no curvature to it. It is definetly draining h2o though, I wonder how hard it would be to replace? It is not hollow though, it is either wood of foam that came out on my drill bit.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
???My boat is a 79 im sure it wold be very easy to replace. It may be a structural component on your boat i couldnt tell you i know mine is pvc?
|
Re: 72 20ft started part II
My boat is a 1975 sf. I have the glassed over 2x4 as a center stringer. I was suprised to find that it was dry at the transom. I didn't cut up the floor or fuel tank bottom so I'm not sure about the rest of it. I'm really not sure about replacing it if its wet. I would think that even if it is a little wet, you would still have the glass for strength. On the other hand, you have the whole thing exposed, so it would not be that difficult to replace.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
so much for saving the transom. Glad I did this now.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console035.jpg port side http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console034.jpg another close up http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console032.jpg Looks like it is coming apart for me, hopefully will be able to save it and use as a template. I had to stop and pick up the Kid-o so it looks pretty sloppy right now, should be able to get it out, cleanup and straighten some cuts today. |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
anyone else seen something like this. I guess it was a patch, atleast I think I finally found my leak.

Re: 72 20ft started part II
thanks for the reply, that makes sense, I think. My transom is soaked and it hasnt seen water in 3 months. I was hoping to baby it out to use as a template, but am about to give up on this. Not a very good pic but the entire port side is mush.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console041.jpg Hard to get much done with only an hour or two a day. I think I am about to "call in dead", and get some work done. |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
finally removed first sheet of plywood, I guess it needed to come out!!!!?????
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console049.jpg heres some scrap should go good in the flowerbed http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console048.jpg shot of transom now. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console047.jpg |
Re: 72 20ft started part II
So, what now. the wood seems as if it is molded into the glass and won't come out quietly or peacefully. Would it just be easier and save time by cutting the entire outer skin and starting over.
I could use some help from the Gods here, if any want to weigh in. |
What I did to remove.
My second piece of wood was a bear to remove. What I did was make vertical and horizontal cuts with a circular saw down to the skin.(try 12*12 size first, and adjust from there) Then I used a wood chisel and pry bar and it came out a lot easier. It seems that a big piece has more leverage, so its harder to budge.
Unless the guys that have gone here before say different: I would not cut the outer skin off. |
Re: What I did to remove.
The circular saw and wood chisel will work well. I also suggest getting a good grinder with 24 or 36 grit discs. I would definitely try to leave the outer skin intact.
|
Re: What I did to remove.
thanks. I used the saw on the first few layers, but sure get nervous when it gets this thin. I guess a few slips is easier than the whole thing. a claw hammer was working well on the first few layers also until I swung in though my pinky. I took the rest of the night off.
headed to the store now for the grinder pads/disc. thanks for the input. |

Re: What I did to remove.
the 'copy-catting" continues, thanks again to all for the great information and pictures to follow.
couple of questions. 1. can I use 1/2 inch plywood for the deck some have used it and other not. Is it a matter of opinion. 2. I am obviously raising the deck and am going to attach to existing gunnels. If they are supported and glassed in do I need to worry about flex? could I back fill with foam? Here is where I am at now. Weather has been wet so I couldn't start on transom. Hopefully tomorrow http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console061.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console062.jpg |

Re: Floor?
that's mine also. I was going to try and reuse the original floor and I guess it could be salvaged, but I don't want to still be working on it in four months.
Thanks |

transom finally cut

fuel tank placement
Ok experts, where did the fuel or "storage" tank go on your boats. I think I have the correct dimensions for a 50 gallon tank, but did everyone just put it in the center of the boat. I am getting to that point and just curious, not trying to turn this into rocket science but want to make it right.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...console131.jpg Did any one move the console from the original location. |
Re: fuel tank placement
Skipjake I moved my console further back and the tank further forward to give a better balance of the boat. I can measure for you tommorrow if you want. The reason I moved the console back was I am putting a big livewell infront also I do most of my fishing from the bow and sides.

Re: fuel tank placement
thanks that would be very helpful. Your boat is looking unbelievable btw. Awesome work.

Re: Update

Re: 72 20ft started part II
Howdy, been lurking awhile and wondered if I might ask how you tied the stringers to the transom? Yeah, I've got a classic Mako under the knife but I'm looking at my next one... Seacraft.... Thanks, Greg

Re: Update
its looking good so far. i will need to do all that one day. im gonna use mine till it needs it badly. what are you going to do with the rear hatches/seats that you cut out? try to glass them back in or make something else? im trying to get ideas when i have to do mine and see how it would be constructed.

Re: Update
grgmouse...i pretty much copied Strick and the others here on the transom rebuild. Closed cell foam and then covered it with woven/roven. I don't know all the technical names for each individual piece of Mat/Cloth etc. I just show up at the fiberglass house with a checkbook and legal tablet. I think you could drop this boat stern first on concrete and it woouldn't budge though. Here are a few pics I tought I had already included.

Re: Update
Thanks. I hear ya about the glass. I've got so many rolls of different kinds in my little shed! I've had a huge learning curve getting up to speed. Luckily, like you, I've had some great resources like this site to lean on. Looks good. Keep it up! I also noticed I didn't see any limbers in the stringers around what looks like it would be the "bilge". Are there none or just not photo'd?

here is one of them, i jsut didn't post them
