Re: Wide Open
Let me try it.
www.flickr.com/photos/23993958@N02/2281666493/sizes/o/ This still is not correct. I think it is the program you are using. It seems like photo bucket is the only consistent one that works. |
Re: Wide Open
Ok, now what?
How do I post commentary? Thx, GFS :D |
Re: Wide Open
I was so focused on the pics i forgot the procedure. Am I stuffed?

Re: Wide Open
Please replace the ball valve with a seacock.
|
Re: Wide Open
Reel,
Why? Thoughts please. |
Re: Wide Open
Seacocks are designed for that purpose. They are much safer. Ball valves are not designed to replace a seacock. Do the research, ask a few surveyors, and look at some of the refurbished boat pics on this site.

Re: Wide Open
Thx Reel,
George at G&S said that`s the way to go, and I`d seen similar set ups here , but if that`s a better mousetrap, better mousetrap it shall be. Any other guidance is greatly appreciated. Now on to the tank......I`ve read lots of posts on this ,so I hope to get this right at the very least. Thx Sandy |
Re: Wide Open
What exactly IS a seacock?
Perhaps a means of obstructing inflow? I think the tragedies you speak of are due to non marine ,non bronze, non U.L. NON MARINE rated,BRASS imposters:Box store crap! Just back from a local{FRIEND} /wholesaler and after casually perusing his books at great length , I cant seem to find a suitable seacock. Do you have a preference for brand/ ball valve / gate valve? Mine`s an Apollo. All seem to have a much smaller triangular footprint that is not compatible. You make a very valid point about household CRAP that has NO business in salt water.I took your advice and did a little digging. What did I find? A BOXSTORE ball that didn`t have ANYTHING LEFT OF IT AFTER 1 YR. WOWSY WOWSY WOO WOO. I thank you for thinking of me and others here! I have that kind of mind and thought of a glassed up backing plate from ply. I left myself @ 3/4"gap. Thoughts please. Thanks for all of us! I had the very same concerns as to "What If?". |
Re: Wide Open
If it wasn't pouring rain I would take a pic for you. I'm NOT telling you this is the absolute correct way because I'll be glassing down the same mount later (much later I hope :)) All of this was pre-fit before sealing/screwing/etc. I took a 6" x 6" x 3/4" plywood, drilled the HS pick-up clearance hole, put on 3 coats of epoxy, and 4200 it down, mounted the high speed pick-up with SS screws long enough for a good bite, screwed the seacock (a glorified flange mounted ball valve) to the HS pick-up tightly, screwed it to the wood using 4200 to seal all of it. I realize mine is somewhat temporary because I believe the wood should be glassed down.
Look up "ringleaders" boat/refurbish. Here's a pic of the epoxy coated wood. The larger is for thru-hull transducer. With all that said.....I read recently in a sailing mag. that Groco is recalling a lot of 2-3 yr. old seacocks because the SS stem material did not meet their spec. (made in china) :( I think mine falls in that group. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...1/DSC00038.jpg |
Re: Wide Open
I think I`m too much of a newbie to have seen Ringleaders work. SOOOOOO much to learn. Much gratitude and thanks for all the help. Haven`t had a boat since the age of 12. 13` Whaler and a Beetlecat. It`s a quaint little old wooden semi displacement gaff rigged sailboat that CAN`T be capsized by dumb kids. I brought dumb to a new level. Flying jibe anyone?
Thx, GFS |

Jibe HOOOO. Splash. Bunny Howard was a great sport, and sailor of massive local repute in Barnstable, Ma..He took care of the entire "fleet". Launchings , embarassing situations etc.Great Boatwright. Old school. We moved when I was 12 and I`m finally back where I belong!
Thx Father! See you in Sebastian |
Re: Wide Open
It gets better Father Frank. I didn`t just capsize , I pulled a full turtle in the cut channel over by the saddle of Sandy Neck in Barnstable harbor. In the middle of an out going tide! The rudder was just a drop on affair that thankfully floated nearby. I lashed it to the tiller. I swam under to raise,or was that lower the center board. The mainsail was another story, and the mast was getting VERY close to the muck. I ran the main sheet through the top er bottom gooseneck and lowered er raised the main sail. There was a Laser class race going on at the time and someone had called the committee boat over. We towed her in to the beach and rolled her over. I hand pumped her out and called it a day. Bunny Howard said no one had turtled a Beetlecat in recent memory. He wasn`t a young man at the time.
I stopped by at the end of the season in `93 , not having seen the place in 20 years. Now , BYC wasn`t much of a YC at all. It was really a place to drop the squids off to get them out of the house. No power or phone save for Bunny`s shop, no running water. We used to prime a hand pump w/ sea water. The water had the most wonderful flinty taste. Bunny was about to haul a Rhodes 18 with that same old red tricycle gear Farmall tractor, as I walked over. We were the only ones in sight. He said , You come down in that Jeep with them Floooooridah tags on it? I said Hi Bunny. He squinted and said Oh your that Staaahhhk kid aintcha. I laughed and said the place looks great. I said Bunny the place hasn`t changed a bit. He said some places aint meant to change ya know. He asked Ya wanna crew? I said I`d love to. I had a great time sailing and asking what happened to so and so and catching up on lost time. There were only 2 piers , the well maintained main dock , and Bunny`s rickety old pier. He kept it that way on purpose. It held lots of flounder! I asked if he would mind. He said I was one of the only ones who ever fished it besides himself. I grabbed my rod and some mussels off a piling and he was right. Bunny liked flounder too. I gave him one and asked about the wife and kids as he did the same. Hows ya Mum n Dad n Brothahs n Sistahs is a close mental picture. Yup , some places aint meant ta change. GFS You can google John Howard and John Howard II aka Bunny and Beetle Cats to learn more. Commodore Howard was a legend. |
