225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
Hi All,
I have a 1989 18 CC with a 25" transom, this model was offered with a 150 hp V6 from the factory, I have a good 225 V6 Evinrude that i am thinking of hanging on the boat, I know it will be tons of power,,,, does anyone know how much heavier the 225 V6 is than the 150 hp V6. Will the extra weight be to much? Thanks, Walter |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
Walter,
According to the NADA web site, a 225 seems to be about 75 pounds heavier. Also, the boat was rated for up to 150 HP. That seems to be a lot of power and weight. It will be interesting to read some of the other responses. Peter |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
The 150 Johnson on my 18 weighs around 375. Maybe with a new transom and a 3" raised deck I would consider more weight. IMO the hull would handle 225hp with no problem. Insurance companies and the Coast Guard wouldn't have the same opinion though. Hermco installed a bracket on an 18 powered by a 175. I'd love to see some performance numbers on that and hear whether the owner thinks it could handle more weight and hp.

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I would think a 25" transom would also be a must.

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
You could do it and just work around the weight and speed differences. There has been an 18SF in the Tampa area that had a 225 on it for a while. The only reason to do it is the cost savings tied to having a motor on hand to hang on the boat(which is how many of us make decisions to boat these days ).

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I have a 1978 18 cc with new raised transom and alum bracket with large flotation chamber. New etec 150 which weighs 430 lbs. Cockpit drains fine but probably would not without the bracket. Don't know speed #s yet but it begins to get squirrely at wot. Boat US will probably insure at an agreed value.

Once when I was in the keys I saw a 20 on a trailer with twin 2.5 merc's on it. No kidding.

The boat can handle it, most operators can't... IMO, Ken |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
Briguy I have also seen that boat, probably 5-7 years ago in the keys. Would love to have taken a ride in her :D

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
i think the 2.5 race mercs are 260 or 280 hp.

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I have the 18 with the Hermco Bracket and Evinrude 175. The Full flotation bracket makes a difference. With the prop I have on it, it will run 50. The boat handles well it gets up on plane fast and has plenty of power. My brother-in-law calls it a Ferrari. I would think twice about putting that large of a motor on your boat. Before I had the work done on the boat it had a 20" transome and with a 150 evinrude, it sat low in the water and always had water coming in the scuppers. I think even with your 25" transome you will have water comming in the back. Just a thought

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
As vcsjupiter was saying, well maybe in another way. As long as you are going forward you will do just fin. Just don’t put it into neutral and forget reverse.
Now lets ask another question could you mount that big of a engine on that small of a boat. Yes the bass boaters do it all the time but the boat was designed to handle it AND to handle it in FLAT water. The money you would save on the engine would be spent on the boat to re design it beyond the manufacturers intention. So the real question is do you want to re design your Boat??? FellowShip Just for the Grins :D |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
That 225 is a BIG motor with a LOT more potential than the 225 sticker. I have a 1995 200 sitting in the garage and it's HUGE compared to the Mercury 2.5L that's right next to it . . . 2.4L Merc is even smaller. The 225 Evinrude is about the same physical size as a 250 Yamaha.
If I were you I'd lean toward a 2.4L or 2.5L merc v6 . . . I think it's a better combo for the 18. http://members.cox.net/aprilhorvath/...Project300.jpg |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
My insurance agent, a fellow boater would ask me what the motor was and the maximum rating and "just say no". Insurance would not pay you or defend a liability issue if you exceed the max rating. I'm no lawyer, by I can assure you you'll be spending time in court if someone or something gets hurt. :o

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
Hi ALL,
225 is a BIG engine,, I have a line on a 99 Ocean Pro 150, probable a better choice, I will probable go that route, Walter T |

I don't know which 150 your looking at but if it's the 60 degree carbed model you'll be happy with everything but its gas guzzeling trait. There's a big weight difference between the 60 and 90 degree design.

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I have a `96 150 OP on my 20 and its a good balance at 365 #s. The 60 deg is supposed to have much better harmonics, but it does love the parish wine. George forgot to put back my thermostats last year on the 100 hr service. It pissed the same as when I bought it so I guess they were out for a while...... Wouldn`t that keep it in fast start mode, which would explain why it idled poorly? What`s the potential damage. Gotta feeling I`m not gonna like the answers.
Thx Gfs :( |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
If its the same as the 99, yes on all accounts. Mine warms up to 170 degrees and runs much better throughout the entire rpm range with thermostats. Fuel consumption is also less. As for damage when not being run hot enough,I'm not sure. I know they can cold seize. Maybe someone else can chime in on potential problems.

Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I just got it back 2 weeks late and it still pissed poorly.
He asked me if I took out the t stats and I told him he was the last person to touch it.He`s a good wrench and has an A&P too, but he has a couple of kids working for him.... Ah, the ability of human nature to disappoint. Anyone have a preference for manuals as it looks like I`ll have to do it the right way. MY WAY! I`m not good w/ electronics or computers but I can spin some wrenches. I did a timing belt on a `80 Porsche 924 when I was 19. Yes it`s an interference motor, and I knew that going in. I need a large adult beverage. Thx , GFS |
Re: 225 HP Evinrude on 18 CC
I don't know what the guys here think and I didn't consider it when I re-powered my 18 (Danny Wood's 18) but hou about a 140 hp omc motor. I just saw one on Charlestonfishing. I dnd not know this option was available.

All the OMC/BRP 4 strokes are just Zukes w/ brp decals on em, Lots of people here run them and love them.
