Word is they are closing the season 9-9-08. Nice to see the season last last longer then 13 days, last 2 years were short and the quota was filled quickly. This has been a better year. Great looking fish guys. Keep on fishing-fall is upon us guys up north and time is running short but we will fish till we get the white stuff.

Must be the gloves: the bare-handed fish is much smaller than when he put the gloves on :D

Nice work Ed. My buddy had a 54" last Saturday on a live pogie. Seems like those unweighted Sluggos are doing the trick lately.

Re: Boston Bluefin

Tim - On the way out to the bank, we saw tuna jumping everywhere over the course of 5 miles. We were not really set up for casting, so we trolled for about 20 minutes and no luck. Against conventional wisdown, we decided to leave fish and continue on to the bank as per our original plan. Once on the bank, there were some jumpers...but nearly as many as before.

I took an 80 pounder yesterday on spin gear out there while we were trolling. Those fish are just so much fun on light tackle.

My brother got a 110#er on 30# spin pitch bait on Halfway Hump a month ago. 1:45.

Nice fish Rip. Glad to see our Yankee friends having sooooooo much fun. Go SAWX. I was at Dean Stadium 2 yrs ago for Matsusaka`s debut in spring training and some guys from Southie were behind me , just a scant 7 rows from the dugout. They were in fine form and I was really homesick.

And then SOME!!!! Great fish Nick, kudos!

Without giving anything away, where abouts did you find that puppy? Also, how are the tuna running this year around here? I haven't spoken to anyone lately to ask.

Re: Boston Bluefin

Hi Lew,

I caught this fat puppy(52"L x 39" girth!) in my secret spot on the NWC. There were just 200+ boats in my secret spot, so come out and join us! :D

I had another that dumped 3/4 spool of 65# braid on a Penn 9500SS in 15 seconds to have the knot fail :(. I had to laugh though as the line sizzled off, to hear my buddy say "I think i got one?" :D No ..... , really?

Talk to those guys in FirstLightAnglers in Rowley not far from you. Great guys and they will set you up right.

Hurry up though, we are running out of time.

PM me if you need more info.

Good Luck Nick!

Rumor has it CSICKNICK caught another bluefin yesterday....

cSickNick 10-27-2008 02:14 PM

Re: Boston Bluefin

No rumors, here are the facts :)

***

I had a guy cancel last minute and since the fair weather window on Sat was small, I decided to head out solo from Gloucester.
Left the dock at ~6:30am Sat and hit the NW corner of Stellwagen bank at ~7:30 to see a few boats.
The usual, trolled sluggos and Rapala divers for a few hours and throwing jigs in between.
Then at ~10am the trolling Rapala reel sounds off !!
This fish was tough and did not tire like the others. Numerous runs all around the boat and wind/waves building and being solo was a challenge!
After ~45 min battle, rod in one hand and gaff in other, fish was in boat!
Fish was 58" estimated at 120lbs or better ….
I plan to quit while ahead at 3 fish for 3 trips!

Nick,

Nice looking fish! I got two that size into the boat (Maritime Skiff 20') this year solo, and I agree, it's a challenge. I'm looking around for a nice Sceptre/Tsunami for next year at Stellwagen. At close to 6' 3" I'm not sure but I feel like I might be just a little too big for a Seafari :(

Next year should be interesting with all these 58" fish a year later (and a year bigger)

Re: Boston Bluefin

We had the same sized fish this Aug and Sept in Southern NJ. They are powerful brutes, aren't they?

Like Nick said wait until next fall when they are one year bigger

Did I read that right, Rapalas and Slugos? I think we used to bass fish with those lures. Nice fish! What type of Rapalas do ya'll pull up there?

Re: Boston Bluefin

We troll the Rapala X-Rap diver usually in black. Sluggos can be the 9 inch or the 12 inch, usually in White, Arkansas Shiner or sometimes black. Two ways to use the sluggo....trolling unweighted on 7/0 Owner Jobu or Owner Longshank hook. Or you can jig them on a heavy duty weighted jig head.

I've caught a handful of these over the ladt 4 years, but Nick definitely is more knowledgeable and consistent. I am sure he will pipe in with more suggestions.

cSickNick 12-01-2008 02:40 PM

Re: Boston Bluefin

Yes,

Rapala X-Raps were working well for most, and the color for me was their mackeral. I have pogie and a silver black, but stuck with the mackeral most times since it was producing.

Tried sluggos on the troll, with no success and a if not paying attention especially unweighted they produce a mono tangle so large you can wear it as a sweater on the way home :D

I caught the one on the trevala on a simple 8oz hammered diamond jig which was a blast!

I had another on a RONZ weighted silver type of sluggo on the cast, but that fish hit like a sledge hammer and the braid appeared to have parted at the mono Slim Beauty knot connection. Knot positive :) from the evidence, but when back to Uni-Uni success knot.

Hope the reply is not too late, feel free to PM me ....

- Nick

Re: Boston Bluefin

Great catches Nick, here's a west coast specimen from late Oct. Never got any real numbers and the skipper said it was a bigeye. Pretty sure it's a nice BFT (shorter pec fin). Truth is most of the BFT around here are 30-50#. 100# class are rarely culled on rod and reel 'cause people tend to go out geared for 40# fish and get spooled. Here's my colleague, Otis, he's 6'2" & 285#.
Sometimes its better to be lucky than good. Got him on the troll. Poor s.o.b. can't even tie a Palomar knot but he sure can eat sushi with the best of them... :D

Hey Gillie,

Very Nice fish!

Not sure if i could tell the diff on a Big Eye unless it was wearing glasses :D

Also that Seafari has more room than mine ... :)
