My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Well I decided to make it official. When the State of Florida decided to more than double my annual registration fee this year on my boat I applied for my ANTIQUE registration and got it. I now do not pay the fee to register my boat just the processing fee what ever that is. I always admired those cool cars on the street with Antique license plates now I got my equivalence for the boat.

Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
And a fine vintage vessel it is... Right on with your right on, Baby!
I heard the Antique Vessel Act(AVA) was part of Obama's tax break for the middle class package, changing hearts and minds for the purpose of preserving an historic FL (you know, preserving old pirates with old boats). No longer will folks ask you what you want with such an ol' boat :D |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Awesome Ken!! I didn't know they had them for vessels... My registration expires 09/2010..I'll be applying for my "Antique Classic" for sure :D

Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hi Capt. Chuck;
When I got my renewal registration in the mail I send the application that very same day it took 4 weeks for the approval to come back to me. You could send your application it any time you want. If I were you I would shoot for approx 60 days before your 9/10 renewal. I also send them a copy of my boat survey I had done in 2002 along with my app. That was a bit overkill but I didn’t want anything to slow down the process. The app. asks for the owners OR a licensed marine surveyor to fill out and certify that the vessel meets or exceeds the standards established in 328.72 of the Florida statutes. I felt that the copy of the survey would put any questions to bed. FellowShip Just for the Grins :D |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Ken, Did you keep your FL number or did they
assign you a new one???? That is the only reason I would not do-it, if they were to give me a new set of numbers. See ya, Ken |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Your going to love this I just logged onto the Broward county web sight for registering my boat on line it’s going to cost me $4.90 to register for a year now. It would have cost me $49.03 if I wasn’t officially a Classic SeaCraft owner.

Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
No Bones;
The FL # is the same all you have to do after your approval comes in the mail is to log on the Tax man’s sight your Registration fee will have been changed already. Fill out the info and you will get your new renewal in the mail. Then just put on your renewal sticker Plus the Antique sticker with in 3” of the renewal one. The Florida Antique Vessel procedure form # is VSRS-01 – top right side. On the bottom of the form there is a different # - HSMV 80001 (5/92) The form to be filled out is called Antique Vessel Certification You mail it in and then wait for approval and Antique vessel sticker. Then go to your tax web and do your thing with $4.90 and SHABAM you will get your renewal in a few days. I remembered reading your post which prompted me to apply. Thanks You might get more takers on that form again if you still have it. I don’t have a blank one. FellowShip Just for the Grins :D "Official Antique Classic SeaCraft Owner" |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
I used ESD's form, took it directly to the courthouse when the registration was due and they did the registration renewal as an antique, I paid the small processing fee, only took a few minutes, it was easy. But I didn't get an antique sticker! Ken, know if there's a way I could get one now?

Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hi IslandTrader;
Yaw I got you on that part. Kind of subjective interpretation and decision. But now that America is inaugurating a Liberal Democrat in a few days You could look at it like this – My boat was powered by a outboard motor and I still have a outboard motor on her. Or My boat was powered by a gas combustion engine and it still is. That should pass the congress. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
You could look at it like this – My boat was powered by a outboard motor and I still have a outboard motor on her. Or My boat was powered by a gas combustion engine and it still is.
i read that form and it says the engine needs to be the same year as the vessel. i guess there are exceptions to that ?? |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hi Blue197320;
Fuzzy details, fuzzy details as we all know here in the state of Florida the motor is not titled when you purchase a boat. SOOOOO if on my boat title it doesn’t say anything about a motor being a original part of the package purchase maybe it didn’t come with a motor and the original owner of my boat added one later, or maybe it never had a motor. If all boats came with the same motor or the motor was indicated on the ID # like cars then I would know. BUT the truth of the matter is no one knows and since no one knows and the form is not exact enough I sent in my Marine Survey which Did intricate what motor I have on the boat and they approved it. SOOOO if they said OK who am I to argue with their judgment. Test to Pass???? Or Test to Fail???? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
i will be trying it out with mine. but i wonder... do i tell them the powerhead is '84 or do i tell them the rest of the motor is '91... hmmmm very fuzzy details...

FellowShip,
Thanks for the info, I'll contact Kirkman and give that a try. |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Here is the actual wording of the applicable statute:
Quote:
gasoline, diesel, or other, PLUS outboard, inboard, sterndrive, or other. SO, if your boat was originally powered by a gasoline fueled outboard, and it still is, it meets the requirements of the law. But if it was originally powered by a gas sterndrive, and is now an outboard, it does not meet the requirements. |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Fr. Frank-My 23SF just hit 30 yrs, as it is hull #1 for 1979. Is there a defined power plant list? If not, I'm going to submit mine and see if they take a diesel jackshaft converted to outboards. (heck it didn't switch to sail power-unless those Mercs die 100 miles offshore :o)
|
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
This is just TOO good!!! My 23' SF is the sixth behind yours!! Hull 007, laid July 1978, however it's titled as a 1979. My Antique Vessel application is in the mail and hopefully I will get my antique sticker when my registration is due in May. Thanks to all for the heads up!!!

The "definition" of the terms on the back of the form is non-binding, and just some bureaucrat's own interpretation. Especially when you consider that all outboard models came from the factory with no power at all 30 years ago. Power was added by the dealer, and it was possible to buy the boat without a motor and add one later. I used to sell SeaCraft boats new 25 years ago, and we never received one from the factory with an outboard motor installed. We always offered the boat with whatever power the customer wanted to put on it, although we also offered "package deals" on boat, motor, and trailer. |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
My computer crashed over the weekend and just got back on again.
Seems like a bunch of talk over “Fuzzy Details” it seems that the supreme court of judgment is struggling on what to do. Let me ask you a question if you got stopped by a Cop on a possible speeding fine or if you were standing in court before a judge would you rather be talking to a right wing hard nose conservative judge or cop? Or would you rather be talking to a easy going left wing “live and let live” liberal “good old boy” judge or cop??? In these cases I would want a break by someone being a nice guy, be a nice guy to your self. If the State has written something with fuzzy details in it than take the info and interpret it in your favor not against yourself. Turn in the form and let them sort it our like I did. Be your own liberal cop or judge to yourself. After all there are a lot of forces in this world that wants to condemn you don’t do it to your self. FellowShip ...................... Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hey, thanks for the heads-up.....I have been eligible for 4 years already!
|
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
I took the completed antique vessel application down to my local Hillsborough County Tax Collector/Tag branch office......I'm not sure they will ever recover!! I showed the counter clerk and her supervisor the form and they looked at me like I had snakes growing out of my head. Not to be detered, I'm escalating to the main office!! I'm sure someone in our County government will know how to handle. More to come.......

Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hi DonV;
On the form or the info that goes with it they say to mail it to the Tallahassee state office for approval. I don’t think a county office has the authority. FellowShip ………………………………........... Just for the Grins :D “Official Classic SeaCraft Owner” |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Question, My Seacraft has been eligilble for over 10 years now but the problem is, it has been registered as "Homebuilt" since it was salvaged by Dad and I since we first found it back in the early 70s. I never wanted to change it as to not "rock the boat" (pardon the pun). I have no VIN number since the plate is long gone.
Will I need a VIN (HIN?) to reregister it as a Seacraft and antique? Will the state of Florida have issues with me if I do? Should I still not "rock the boat" here? |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
I don't there is a place for a VIN number on the form
by the way I have it in PDF if anybody wants me to email it |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Yeah...I had sent the form to Tallahassee for the stickers, whatever else they do, however it states on page 2, first paragraph to take it to the local tag agency. I was covering all bases, or so I thought, in any case the application is in both agencies. I'm sure it will be OK...... I'm sure......sorta sure.
"Upon completing this form in its entirety and submitting it to the local county tax collector's office or license plate agency, the county will issue a registration reflecting exempt antique status and this form will be returned to the applicant" |
Re: My Classic is officially a Classic Now
Hi DonV;
Yah the way I saw it was first send it to Tallahassee to get approved and then go to your local county and get the registration for the $4.90. Which I did on the internet and it showed the price had already been changed to the new low low price. I just got my new registration in the mail today. Fishing fanatic Since you boat is registered as a home built boat it is not a SeaCraft at least to the state it is a homebuilt boat. You would have to first get it registered back as a Seacraft and then move on the antique states. You would have to have a title for the boat with vin # and saying it is a SeaCraft.
