1974 23 CC - project

I have been working on my 23 for a couple of months now. I was very lucky to score some inside space for a few months so I am trying to make the best of it. With 2 heaters going and burning $20 of kerosene a day I can even get epoxy to cure ;).

Transom: layup is 2 3/4 marine ply in bed of cabosil then 3 layers glass (1708,18oz roving,1708). Stringers tabbed (1708)...knees are 3/4 marine and 1708. Plans are for a bracket.

Time to refresh this post :D Lots of sanding and fairing going on. End may be in sight soon and I am dreaming of primer and 'sky blue' paint. Anyone ever use "bilgecoat"? I am looking to try something new below deck and on hatch bottoms.
Pixs:
hatch cores:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ron/pic043.jpg

Transom almost fair: if anyone has a clue on the brown base let me know. The boat had green bottom paint that seemed to wear totally off. Then it left the white haze (on left). Hit that with a sander and you get brown . Original barrier coat? I have no clue. Plan is to keep hitting it with 80 grit and use 'Hydrocoat' over it. ??

Not a real fan of "bilge coat" basically it is an enamel, which will end up peeling, seeing as you are using epoxy I would tend to use interprotect 2000/2001 or something similiar, the bottom paint was probably a copolymer "sloughing" sp? paint, which will wear quickly when scrubbed or sanded, yet it is an all season paint which allows you to haul numerous times and not let the paint go bad, if you where to use a hard "epoxy" paint, it would not wear off, yet you would have to repaint the bottom every time you hauled and it will "build up", don't forget the copper issues.

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

I have used SW tile clad in the bilge. It is a 2 part epoxy.

It has a nice gloss and can be rolled and brushed. One of the main uses of this product is coating the inside of water towers...so it is pretty tuff.

Plan is to sand with 80 grit and apply Hydrocoat ablative. Boat will be moored. I'm done with hard epoxy on the bottom.

OK bailed on the "bilgecoat". Picked up some epoxy primecoat and 2 part barrier coat from the Boaters World liquidation sale  May also check out SW tileclad.

The transom is fair and I did get some epoxy primer over the transom I/O holes....
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/pic008-1.jpg

..and the hull sides have been sanded and are almost ready for the Signature Finish "sky blue". While watching fairing compound dry I have been painting below the chine with Pettit Hydrocoat ablative...sill a little wet in pic.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/pic010-1.jpg

I spend the day in the shop and when I leave everything looks the same except for the new 1/4 inch of dust all over everything :D.

I am planning on doing the bilge with 2000e grey barrier coat. I have 1.5 qts left over from something else and may burn it up below deck. Any reason not too?

... Plans are for a bracket.

If you are doing twins or are handy with the torch, I think Dana at Millway has some old brackets. Both have the swim platform and are set up for twins. Dana thought that filling the holes, either with bolts and 5200 or with a torch would not be bad. Price was a bit high but much less than a new bracket, even a single.

I am going to ping warthog on the classic mako site and see how his twin DF140s are treating him (and ask him why he went with twins in this day and age...) I actually prefer twins, but I don't think there is a logical reason to do twins (worse gas miles, can't plane a 23 on single DF140, more money on motors, if anything goes wrong on a 4s it is gas related which screws up twins too, etc.)

I was going to suggest the petit epoxy easypoxy primer (6149?) for the bilge. I think epoxy does not let water through. If I had cash I'd get one of those hermco brackets, those things are the bomb. Actually, if I had cash, I would have hermco do the whole thing who am I kidding? Anyway, you build looks like it is coming along really well.

Well...plans are for a single floatation bracket for my 225 Johnson Ocean Runner.....single carbed bad boy :o. I used epoxy primecoat in the bilge (final) and on the deck reapir (primer).
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...n/pic029-1.jpg
problem is when you prime it all the pin holes show and then the fairing compound shows up again.

I have been "refreshing" the console on the side and after 3 top coats its ready for a new windshield.

The hull sides have 4 coats of signature finish on them. Due to applicator error  it will be getting a 5th and final coat. It looks pretty nice but I wait till its done for the pic.

Has anyone ever painted over the factory non skid??

If so what did you use, how did you prep, and how is it holding up?

I am thinking of painting the deck to match the repair from the I/O. There are a few geloat repairs to be made but I would'nt want to grind down the non-skid and then put it back like I did on the gas tank hatch and forward locker hatch cover. Over all its in good shape.

Getting closer...keep up the good work

I have painted over the nonskid with awlgrip and it held up fine. My only suggestion would be to use a color that hides dirt and stains.

You cant go wrong with Linex.... that's what I used on my 20.

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

Thanks guys.

I am going with a good cleaning, then a de-waxer, then a thinned prime-coat and thinned topcoat of perfection over the old non-skid. I have tested a small area and it should work. The deck is off-white.

After 5 coats of Signature finish I called it done. I had applied the "3 coat system" and had a small area where I had a heater pointed @ the boat. Long story short the paint was going on to thin (my mistake). I took it all down with 220 grit and worked it up to 400ish grit and hit it 2 more times. Then I broke out the buffer and the 3M compound. I still need to wax/finish. It looks good now.

I had help this afternoon so we got the transom cap back on and the rub rail back on. Budget has me re-using 1974 rub rail which is next to perfect.

Gave the molded part thing a shot. Used tinted (white) epoxy, clay radius corners, and 1708 and tape to try to make my transom ice box lids.

The first time I tried to mold a part it didn’t part with the mold  This looks like it should work. I'll know more tomorrow.

CaptDuke,
Thanks. My 23 was an I/O so I removed the cap in one piece after making 2 cuts.

Others I/O owners were kind enough to let me know how to do it (thanks Alan/Bill). I was able to put it back and am glassing the seam. Its still a work in progress but I hope to have it squared away by the weekend.

You can see my little molded lids for my ice boxes came out pretty nice for a rookie.

Also I have been laying down the grit on my new/old hatches.

Well this was my last weekend @ my shop space. I was able to put down the non-skid on the deck. I then hit the whole deck with 2 coats of perfection off white. This was mostly done to blend my deck repair. The main deck looks like an old deck in good shape that was painted .

With time up on inside space…...well...she’s a lawn ornament.

Hey Gang,

A brief FYI.

I sent around my tank plans to 5 places. Its an 80 Gal tank based on my specs. I know some of you like 100+ capacity.

After reading Wavelength's post (yea search function) I was glad I checked with RDS tanks. They got the job. Below is a list of the quotes. No names posted except the low bid(not bashing). Check out the spread :o

RDS $724.00
place a $890.00
place b $810.00
place c $950.00
place d $928.00

note: only place D included the epoxy coat....and all prices include shipping. Oh yea the highest price was nearest to me.

PS: Thanks to Rich @ Cape Marine Supply for the fastest shipping of a fishfinder ever :D Now I got something to do while I wait for my tank.

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

Well I have made little progress on the lawn ornament. :(

I did get in my plexiglass sheet in from estreet plastics. Professional plastics would not send a 6’x 18” UPS. I sent a pm to estreet and they sent me a link to the exact size I needed…..it was about 70 bucks to my door. The original windshield was lexan and the local glass shop wanted $420 to make it! I had also found lexan (bronze) online for about $150 ish cut to fit but went with the plexi.

Getting ready to bend:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic007.jpg

Bent blank…comparing to original…looks like its gona fit:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic009.jpg

Sides cut, edges beveled with file and its ready to install:

Before:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic011.jpg

After:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...c/pic013-1.jpg

I am happy with the way it came out. :D

I have also been doing some little stuff like pulling wires and re-doing thru-hulls. With the arrival of a few key parts in the upcoming weeks I should be able to really start putting her together.

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

Was there any trick to bending the plexi? That looks like a heat gun in the picture so I'm assuming you just heated to it was pliable and bent as required??

thehermit 05-26-2009 08:19 AM

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

Yup...use heat gun...heat evenly...when it gets nice and hot it will start to sag..then slowly bend..even slightly over bend and kill the heat while holding the plexi. Getting the bends on your line with a cruel jig like I used takes some practice. You could make a more detailed jig with router and roundover bit etc..

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

Well time to post a few more pix. I have been plugging away at mostly rigging but it looks more like a boat every day.

The tank came and was epoxy coated and installed. Its 80 gallons. It was installed on lexan strips all in a bed of 5200 then screwed into the stringers. Just like the one I took out.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic033.jpg

My boat was a twin I/O and came with the large console. I think this was a unique option because it had a storage bin in the console and a livewell in the floor aft of a 50 gallon tank. It also had a 50 gallon tank in the forward storage locker from the factory.
The previous owner acquired the seat door for the large console. SO…with the new tank aft and that large seat. I applied the Strick piano hinge method to access. I do like all of the storage.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic038.jpg

Uhh...and this is what it looks like inside the door right now. Still a work in progress.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic039.jpg
and the console is put back fairly original for now.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic037.jpg

I went with this for a thru hull setup:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic026.jpg
Basically after reading about it here I decided I liked it. It went in nice and I think it will do just fine.

I started rigging the 2 pumps I had. A rule 2000 and a rule 500 automatic. Its tough keeping my bilge clean in the yard but the pumps seem adequate. Here they are with the installed thru-hull.
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic042.jpg
.....and the test:
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic041.jpg

On the hard..
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s...ncc/pic046.jpg

I ran some battery cable (I believe 2awg). What have others done to get Bat power from the CC to the outbaord on a bracket? I am planning on breaking it with a switch at the transom.

"What have others done to get Bat power from the CC to the outbaord on a bracket?"

The cheapest way is to go with welders cable... cant remember the size but I like to use the biggest stuff I can find I'm think #1? and its around 1/2 inch think. If you run it from the cc and break it at the transom to another Pos and Neg terminal then you can power other things if you had to. The only hard part about using extra large battery cable is getting it thru the rigging tube.

Boat is looking good...when's that bracket going on it? ;)

Where did you source the seacock and flange? groco brand? I am up in wellfleet and just bought donnies 23, and will be down in chatham this summer living since rent out the house. this is on my project list. i have less room for placement of the thru-hull, has to be in the last 1 foot of the transom so can access the seacock if need be-any issues with that? if you ever need an extra hand let me know...

Which direction do you have the strainer for the thru-hull facing?

strick 06-23-2009 02:33 AM

Re: 1974 23 CC - project

You want it facing forward. On my 20 I have it facing backwards and it works great when at a stand still but when traveling water will drain out of the bait tank. So I have to close the seacock when traveling in that boat. I had the opposite problem on my 23. On that boat I had it facing forward and when underway it would force water into the bait tank and flood onto the deck. I would usually close the seacock to prevent that from happening when underway. One could adjust the seacock so it is only half open to slow the water flow I guess. There are other types that I've see guys use.... one in particular that is flat but has little cheese grader scoops facing forward that catch the water and help the flow into the bait tank.

soon....soon :D

reelescape..yea those are off the shelf Marelon. They were available @ the local chandlery. The stainless replacements are on the "next winter" project list.

The Seacock is all bronze and all groco. I had to go to Hamilton Marine to get the inside flange that lets you replace the ball valve. Its a 1" thru hull that replaced what was there. I only am using it for a washdown right now. The strainer is facing forward :o and like Strick said the ball will be closed when on the mooring and when not using the washdown.

Josh, Im curious how your boat does with the bracket and without tabs. Tabs did not make my "list" this year :(

I mounted my strainer facing forward also. The bait pump screwed into seacock has a seperate pick-up for washdown.

only had the boat out 2x, and it is in at nauset marine getting a new oil thermostat/water pump/pre-emptive fuel float switch replaced. hard for me to say how runs with tabs, not enough to compare with. it jumps up on plane darn fast with the 250 verado and 17P mirage plus, and prob would help a little there in theory but hard to imagine needs much, and def with the balance. have more to say about that when get the tabs on :) i guess.

sourcing the groco parts now thanks! Looks like jamestown distributors has them...

Thanks!! Sure is nice working in that garage! I used Iso - polyester resin and 1708 with everything. I opted for 3/4" doug fir marine ply after sticker shock on the coosa board. Hermit was a super nice guy to offer me a boat he bought for the motor 2000 Johnson 200hp carb in trade for the bracket. I didn't know at the time I'd be buying a house, getting a new girlfriend, moving my shop, and while trying to hold down a full time job in Boston (commuting from Onset). Luckily it's very close to being finished. I gave the 22 Seawolf WA to my Dad for Father's day . . . and I already bought an aluminum bracket for that boat. Striped Bass Season is coming up fast and this bracket project will be finished this week . . . even if I have to pull some all nighters.
