What goes in the crack?

Over the winter I bought a 20' 1978 MA. Where the floor meets the hull there is large open seam. The inner hull liner is carpet that extends down to and into the seam. At some point in the last 30 years someone applied some kind of caulk into it that has fallen out in a lot of places. What should I do to seal this area and is it necessary? Thanks,
Geoffrey

I think crack is a form of cocaine. It goes in the pipe. Ask Rumsfeld. :D

Re: What goes in the crack?

Take a picture and post it. If it right where the deck meets the gunwale my guess is that either the radius of the inner liner failed and CRACKED due to unknown stresses or someone else did a S#!++y job replacing the floor at some point. Either way your going to have to grind away and re-glass. Caulk or adhesive ain't gonna cut it...You might start by doing a search of deck or floor replacements and read Strick's post "Here we go again" at the top of this forum. If you explore this very forum to your heart's content, you'll probably gather enough knowledge to add a DSR (Doctorate of SeaCraft Restoration)to your resume' :D :D
Good luck.

Re: What goes in the crack?

Yes. There is a 3/4 inch gap between the lip of the floor and the gunwale on both sides from the bow to the stern. The carpet extends into the crack about an inch. I will get some close-ups tomorrow.

Re: What goes in the GAP?

That's what I am talking about! Is the gap meant to be left open or should it be sealed with some kind of caulk?

This is how most full deck/liners are installed. :D

Re: What goes in the crack?

What is the red material? Should their be a fiberglass bond between the liner and the hull or is that some kind of caulking material I can inject in there? I guess my real question is what should I do now? It's tough getting started without much training. Thank you for the advice.

Re: What goes in the crack?

I made that diagram to show that the liner is not structural in nature. The gap that you say is present would not be a structural issue to me. It is however a way for water to get into the bilge so you may want to seal it. I have seen these boats with this gap filled with putty but due to the natural flexing of the hullsides there are usually cracks that form. You could pull back the carpet, grind, and glass the seam or fill with a flexible caulking. :D

Got it. Thank you. I've spent some time in Jenson Beach. My Father-in Law lives there. Best kept secret in Florida. I hear Jan's is back in town. I owe you a breakfast next time I'd down. Best regards,
Geoffrey

Re: What goes in the crack?

One last question. In your diagram the liner went almost up to the cap. On my boat the liner only extends up around 4". The carpet is actually applied to the inside of the hull not to a liner. I will try to post some pictures but is that how the carpet was typically applied?

hermco 05-11-2009 09:15 PM

Re: What goes in the crack?

My first diagram was an attempt at showing your liner, the second was a diagram that attempted to show a typical boats liner. The carpet in yours might have been installed before the liner at the factory or a previous owner might have stuffed it down the crack. Either way the carpet should come out of the crack if you want to fill it. Or you could leave it alone. It's your crack and I'm not gonna tell you what to do with it. :D

I am not sure how to make the larger but if you look close you can see a what looks like a cut edge at the top of the liner lip.
