merc help
i have lost 2 cylinders on my 89 seacraft 200 merc carb motor, both on the left bank, replaced batteries, filters, changed plugs, compression reads 115 to 120 on all cylinders even switched the powerpacks around without a differance.pulled the plug wires one at the time all had good blue arc. Winter fishing it would not get up on plane till after about 5 minutes then it would start hitting and run fine the rest of the day.could bad reed valves cause the problem? Thanks Les |
Re: merc help
Try moving the coils around. Sounds like an open circuit, where the gap closes as the motor heats up. See if the problem moves with the coils.

Re: merc help
switching the coils around didnt help,so i run a can of merc carbon cleaner thru the motor and run it hard for 15 minutes. i will know tomorrow when i try it.Im wondering if hotter plugs would help. :D

Re: merc help
stator is toast (Highspeed coil is shot). Test it with the multimeter . . . you can find instructions online or in your manual.

Re: merc help
Hotter plugs can lead to preignition/detonation. Please don`t do that. The heat range of different plug brands also don`t correspond correctly. I only run Champions in my Rude because of this. Factories know best!

Re: merc help
Is your motor a 88 or 89 200. Does it have the 40amp stator with the water cooled voltage regulator? 89 will have this style . . . 88 has the old 16amp stator and tiny voltage reg. If you need an 89 40amp stator . . . I have 3 of them. Will sell for cheap ;) PM me after you test yours.

Re: merc help
not a stator problem or the dead cylinders would be on oposite banks.I think it was a carbon problem, run some carbon cleaner thru it 2 days ago, fired it up last nite run like new.Guess ill have to wait for that 300 zuke a little longer. Thanks for everybodys help. :D Les

Re: merc help
It Could also be gumed up, ie stickey rings etc. hard as it is to believe EXTRA OIL is NOT GOOD. The main difference inoil is the additive package. USE TCW III , at the recomended ratio. Also to quote a well know Engine Marinizer, in 07 they said with the Ethenial in the fuel, If you don't use up the fuel you bought today , add stabilizer. Today fuel does not store well, and loves to solidify in fuel system parts.
