77 Master Angler rebuild
I just got a 77 MA that is in need of some TLC
Plans are to do what needs to get done to use it ASAP as it is just too hot down here to work on the boat outside. Immediate things are the gas tank and hoses, rewire, check the floor as I found "some wood pieces" in the bilge area, and reinstall of the console with batteries under. Install bilge /live well pumps and lights and electronics Also compound and wax and general clean up, It looks like I can bring back the color with a nice compound /wax job. Also figure out how to get rid of the bottom paint (soda blasting or chemical treatment) then either repaint it with bottom paint or????? http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...z/100_0862.jpg I want to have it as ready as possible so the when the Admiral realeases the funds for the engine it will be ready. I plan to attack the major things over the winter season where it is cooler to do work on outside. Besides the budget will not allow to do the major purchases as in the engine and trailer for a while (again check with Admiral). One question I have is the size of the tank. It looks a lot bigger than the 47 or the optional 70 gals that came from the factory. I imagine that somewhere along the way they replaced it and went with the max size that would fit. Kind of nice since it may be a non issure replacing a 30 year old tank and saves me some $$$. http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...z/100_0856.jpg |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I'm also in Miami and have a 79 MA that needs a new tank as well. I'm debating keeping it and restoring it or selling the whole thing. I have an updated center console and 1989 200 hp Yamaha, I waver back and forth, hope to see more of your pics to get motivated.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
the hitchhiker trailer that came with the boat looks to have good bones. just add new running gear. those old hitchhiker trailers were great.
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
The trailer is not in my plans, I plan to get an aluminum newer trailer as I get some $$$.
Today I worked on the console. Took off everything on it and washed it down and it already looks so much better. I plan to scap the teak and go with starboard which is less maintenence. I also cleaned out the bilge of all the junk down there.I found out the the pieces of plywood was from the door that is missing in the rear of the noat. I cleaned the top of the gas tank and opened up where the sender is and found at least 60 gal od fuel in tank. Now what to do with the fuel? I was thiking of running it in one of my trucks a little at a time, |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
i think my carb 200 merc would like it a little at a time. it ran good on year and a half old gas before.
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
When I started my restoration I searched for a place to dispose of the "old" gas from my tank with no luck. On the advice of a friend I ended up adding 2-3 gallons to every full tank in my truck and got rid of it that way. Granted my truck has 250k miles on it so I wasn't as concerned as if it had been new. You can also use the STP fuel additive about every third tank to help keep your injectors clean.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
So I found this while looking in the bilge.
http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...z/100_0861.jpg I imagine it's for the transducer I wonder if it's worth keeping? |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
so whats the best/easiest way to fill in the holes in deck/gunnels etc....
I want to tackle that and start getting the bottom paint off |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
That looks like an expensive transducer - one of the angled ones and is probably definately worth keeping - not sure but see if you can find somebody that does. It looks like an Airimar angled unit - will work with most machines, I found an old thru hull in mine and when the transom crapped out I wired it up and it was pretty good, worth a try they are expensive bastads - all of them.
I agree on the trailer - use what you got, an axle isn't that bad, upgrade later as you can. Anything else you need thats expensive like steering or hardware call Mike at American Marine - those guys will get whatever you need and ship it to you at a good price I would guess - be sure to tell them where you came from - Mario has a Classic 23 and Mike used to have one - they will work with you and give advice on the phone. 727 938 9796 |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Thats nice to hear but the cable leading out if it is only about 2 feet long.
I din't imagine that you can do to much with that And the trailer is the prior owners and he does not want to sell it and I myself would like a newer aluminum trailer. Now should I go single axle? or I am leaning to 2 axle model |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I just puchased a new twin axle trailer for my project. I am very happy with the way it sits on the trailer and it pulls very nicely. I never even considered a single axle. I wanted a twin axle from the start. I'll post pics later today.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I was driving by Torino Trailers today and stopped in to price a trailer.
4000lb alumininum 2 axle trailer was $2038 +tax new Not too bad, now I have a bench mark to look around for a used one |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
DO NOT GET A TORINO!!! i have had issues since new with it. if you want to stop by and look at mine you are more than welcome. i got it from the one off of palmetto and 52street. if your going up that way id reccomend real X trailers. they make some nice trailers. ill tell you more about the problems with the trailer if you decide to pass by.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Thanks for the heads up.
I went just to kick the tires as I have no budget for it now but when the time comes I will be sure to call you and find out all you know. My plans anyways would be to try and find a really nice use trailer..... Hopefully |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Here's the new Majic Tilt I just got for my project. The main reason I went with it was because of the person selling it. I called a dozen different places and had 5 places never even call me back. I guess the marine industry isn't effected by this economy. :D They were about the same price as the others and I got the forward bunks and 14 inch tires that I wanted. The trailer was set-up at the factory for the hull. I had to do a slight adjustment to the front bunks only.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild

|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
ive put a few hundred into my trailer to get it like that one. im still not done yet. i need to get new bunks for it. i will probably make those myself.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
With my real job and other things I have not been able to do much.
What I have done is I took the cap off the gas tank and took off the 18 lbs of chaulking someone had put on, I guess the thinking was the more the better. I also started cleaning out the bilge area and boy there was so much thick crude back there it was unreal. And so far I have taken out 30 gals of gas and ran it in my old ford truck mixing in the same amount of fresh gas, have not had any problems so far. Plan to change out the gas fill hose ( anyone know how long I need?) and new wires for the gas gauge and they reseal it the right way in the next day or so. I would like to get some compound and wax on her to see what happens Maybe on the weekend reinstall the center console so I get it out of the yard.My wife says her yard looks like it from Sanford & Son (Oh well) I would like ideas on removal of bottom paint |

The reason I ask is that the best way to get the paint off is to have it soda blasted off. However if you want the bottom to be smooth there will be a lot of fairing and sanding. Plus then you will have to paint it. |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Would prefer to have it smooth and painted, but if not at least take off what they did and it was terrible and redue it to look better in either bottom paint or something that looks smooth
Suggestions? |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I have a single axle Fast Load - made in Plant city up here - Owens and Son are also good. I don't think you need dual, I have worn a set tires out traveling around with no problems
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
As for the bottom. A cost effective way to make it look good is to sand/clean up the existing coats then repaint with white anti-fouling paint. The white works great on trailer boats. Because it is white you don't notice it as much. Then as time and budget allow go the soda blast, repaint smooth route.

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
That's the route I think I'm heading.
Going to borrow a powerful pressure cleaner to knock off as much as possible the do the manual thing that I'm so looking forward to in the 95 degree weather down here |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Did some researh and found a product called Marine safty Strip sold at West Marine.
http://www.dumondchemicals.com/html/...ons.htm#marine Says that it will take off bottom paint down to the gel coat and not harm it. Anyone try this on their boat? Going to buy a quart and try it, the worst that can happen is the I throw another $20 inb the ocean (cheap) |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I have not tried that one. However every stripper I tried did not budge the bottom paint.
Let us know if it works. |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I used a soybean based stripper that did a good job on removing bottom paint. It took a long time, messy and at the end I still had to wet sand to get all the paint off. In the end I did compound/wax and it came out OK. Just a ton of work.
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
A ton of work what would one expect ....It's a boat ....lots of work lots of money.... but it puts a smile on your face
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Removed this today

Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
No Master Angler should have that piece of crap on it - nice job
|
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I want to take care of the holes left from all the screws that I removed on the gunnel and transom.
Right now I am not so worried about looks not that I want it to look bad ( i plan to work on the paint job in 2010) so what would be the best/easiest way to take care of them? |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Hey buddy, I had priced a trailer from Nextrail last year since I heard they're very reputable and make good, inexpensive trailers. For example, I priced an all aluminum trailer, double axles with torsion suspension (better than leaf springs), SS hydraulic disc brakes, LED lighting and rated for 10,000 lbs (I almost bought a Bertram 25 FBSF last year but the deal fell thru) but get this, it was only going to cost $4500 delivered to my house! When you're ready give them a try, the B25 owners that have them are real happy with them.
Have to come by and see the boat sometime! :D |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
Come on by I have not seen you in awhile
I checked out the Nextrail web site and the prices seem really good I'm going to call them and see about the pricing. I've made a little progress on the boat mainly in the deconstruction part. I need to sweet talk the wife for some funds to buy some things to start putting it back together. Call me |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
I bought a qt of the stripper and applied it to the boat. After 3 hrs I went out and it seems like it is doing a decent job. It does look like I will have to do a 2nd coat and I plan on buying a gal size next time.
what I think is helping is that the person that did the bottom paint did a crappy job and did not sand the bottom 1st or do a barrier coat so it makes it easier to take off. I think it's quicker and easier than sanding the bottom. Even if I do have to sand etc... it looks like I will save some time and effort. |
Re: 77 Master Angler rebuild
He's were I'm at with the removal fo the bottom paint.
I brushed on the stripper and waited overnite to remove. I used a pressure cleaner to help in the removal. I did not expect a miricle but it worked out ok for the 12 dollars I spend on the West Marine brand. I plan to get another qt and re-apply and pressure clean it again. I did have better results in the bow area but the back 1/2 still needs some additional elbow grease. Again not bad results http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...z/100_0876.jpg http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b3...z/100_0875.jpg |
