1972 20 CC

Got her off Craigslist a year and a half ago, trailered to Hyannisport just in time to block Senator Kennedy's return from the hospital, loaded a 16' Starcraft on top, used it for a summer as it was in Nantucket, put on a 150, used a little more in the fall/spring, then let her sit over the summer at a storage center, NOW finally got to use a saw-zall...

Re: 1972 20 CC

Plans: fix the obliterated stringers, raise deck, new transom, modify console, hopefully we'll get to replace everything with new goodies.

One of the most important things on the list is widening the gunnels from the transom forward about 9 feet. I need them beefed up a little bit (like Mark's/OldBull's 20) for boarding and rod storage.

As for the stringers, I'm not sure whether to use a mold of a 4x4 or something and just heighten them and fill em with foam, or just do some grinding and start over with laminated plywood. I think for convenience sake I'll just keep the old ones...

Nice work. Did you know ahead of time that your stringers were damaged? If so, how did you check them?

Re: 1972 20 CC

The boat had a really weird flex to it, I'm talkin about feeling every minor wave right under your feet and a really soft deck- you could tell something was off. The deck wasn't necessarily rotten but the tops of the stringers were just gone so it had nothing to rest on. There were a couple warped areas around the console though. I just wanted to start over and fix everything so a full restore was the plan from the beginning.

90" with rubrail off in a 92" garage... the driveway was the tough part though.
Tied it to a tree and drove forward, got the transom touching the ground and then cranked it in a little so it was just balancing. Then backed the trailer wheels to the garage, got about half the boat in the garage by itself.

Re: 1972 20 CC

Got in a little deeper tonight... Cut out aft boxes and got back the rotten plywood out. Slow and boring, but progress. The demo is the worst part.

When we raised the height to 25" a couple years ago we made a bandaid out of 1/4" plywood on the outer skin that has no chance off being taken off now. I'm thinking the best way to get rid of it is to cut it out completely. It'll be like a gigantic motor well, and glassing over it later will be a pita.

If you have a 4.5 inch grinder, try 36 grit sanding discs. That should remove the plywood pretty quick. Go with 50 or 80 grit when you get close to the original glass.

Re: 1972 20 CC Complete Restore

Made the switch from plywood... 1.5" penske for the transom and corecell for the deck. Got it tabbed in yesterday, its rock solid already.
Poured foam in the stringers, and got worse at it on each one. How does that even happen? I gotta say that is amazing stuff to work with.

Looking at these pictures I am feeling encouraged. I will own my dad's '72 20' before too long and when I do I'll have to tear out the floor. Fortunately it's simply a matter of removing the rivets behind the rub rail and lifting the innards from the hull. I don't have my '73 Shovelhead to tear apart any more, ride a BMW now. So I'm looking forward to getting personal with the boat. Looking forward to seeing the end results, Yours and Mine.

Grinding with those 36g pads is so easy, its practically a roto-tiller- just gotta watch touching the foam... At least it doesn't make any dust though.

Re: RE: 1972 20 CC

After raising the stringers and laying out the corecell, its gonna be about 17 or 18 inches from the deck to top of the gunnel (at lowest part close to transom). This seems super low standing on the boat now... I know its not a tall boat but are those measurements regular on other 20s?

Re: RE: 1972 20 CC

Your restoration is coming along nicely! Keep up the good work. As far as the freeboard goes, the 20 doesn't have much to begin with and by raising the height of the stringers you will decrease it even further. 17" sounds about right though mine may be less than that.

foolharty 11-07-2010 12:10 AM

Back at it- 20 CC

update... made a dolly to roll in and out of the garage- works like a charm. 3 sheets of corecell for the floor, with woven- one layer from each side, overlapping in the middle. its strong but i haven't convinced myself not to add one layer of 1708. other than that fitting the tank underneath and sanding...

**if anyone has a heated garage bay or anything let me know, i'm sick of being outdoors/ the cold weather is slowing progress.

I like your roller base. I made similar base but the rollers must be too small because it is not easy to move. What size rollers did you use

Ed, we used to build these things to display new boats in our showroom, and quickly learned that anything less than 6" wheels on the casters created problem. We finally settled on using soft rubber 8" casters, with locking/swiveling casters at both ends, and carpeted bunks. We also used 2"x8"x10" PT (or Wolmanized) bunks, and added a cross-brace in the middle to prevent horizontal bowing.

FR Frank,

I have 6 hard casters that are either 4" of 6". I am not really sure what 8" soft casters are. Can you buy them at Home Depot or do you have to go to an industrail supply house?

Thank you

the mekp is dark red and it turns the pink resin dark. back to the clear hardener now so it should be normal colored...

the rollers are 4" rated for 350# and get hung up on a couple cracks but so far work well. i kind of slapped this together so i wonder how long it'll hold up.

Wow. I've never seen polyester resin that color. I thought it might be epoxy resin that had sat long enough for the hardener to turn dark. It gets about that color.

I used casters like yours on my gantry crane and on the cradle for my Hewes Bonefisher. I got them at Lowes for about $10 each. Fr. Frank is right. The larger diameter wheels roll a lot easier. The heavy duty casters I used for the dolly under my Seafari have 4" wheels and can be difficult to get started rolling. Then again, it weighs 3000lbs, so I should probably expect to have to give it a good shove to get it going.

Your 20 is looking good. Nice precision work on that deck. Looks like it fits like a glove.

Makin progress

Great last couple days. Got the top layer of glass on the deck, its 2408 and it burns through resin like theres no tomorrow. Hit it with the grinder and its ready for another after its glued to the stringers. Poured some foam in and got the rigging tube in too. Got the holesaw out and went 4 for 4, all right where they should be

Soft casters have metal wheels with non-pneumatic poly or rubber tires. Hard casters use metal wheels with no tires. We used to get them from a local industrial supply, but I have seen them at Northern Tool & Hydraulic up to 10" in non-pneumatic soft poly. I think harbor Freight also carries them, in 800 or 900 lb capacity. The ones we used were rated at 1200 lbs, each, but we exceeded that often. We even put a 34' Wellcraft St. Tropez on one of these wooden cradles, (although we beefed it up a bit, using doubled 2"x12"x12' bunks). It was a b**ch to move that thing around the showroom. It took 4 men to move it.

More pictures

About 2.5 gals of polyester and 1 pound of cabosil on the stringers and around the sides, gave it a nice little fillet and then glassed it in. While that set up I got to work on an old Mako 19 console that I'm planning on using. Its wide but is a lot nicer than the original.

What are peoples dimensions, mainly height and width. I'm thinking around 34" to the wheel and then up to about 48" without a windshield. May do a T-Top, maybe just a radar bar.

Starting up again

Just tried to roll it out of the garage and she definitely got wider this winter- barely fit through the door. I thought I was safe with the floor in and the cap on but not the case. Seems to have bulged from the waterline not really the gunnel. Will need some convincing to get it back...
