Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
Well,my boat is shrink wrapped, six hours away and put to bed for the winter. So,I think after three years of restoration work,I'm going to be taking a break and vegging out for the winter.
I'll spend my time looking through catalogs for a Radar unit, and tackle, and other goodies to add in the spring. Until then,I'm going to enjoy watching the current restorations that many on this site are doing.I know that I'm sure not going to miss putting on that Tyvek suit, and respirator any more. I'll live that vicariously through projects many of you are working on. |
Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
I have a complete rewire planned for this winter, but being in SFL I need to work around the weather... Along with the re-wire will come some new electronics and perhaps the addition of a Radar.
I normally look for a good day or 2 in the winter to get on the water, this winter I will look for a couple of weeks of wind so I can get this done without missing any good fishing days. |
Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
Lol work around weather in SoFl! Cmon up to NE and we can bring a whole new meaning to that!

Re: What's everyone got for winter projects?
Winter in S. Fla. means it finally cools off enough for comfortable boat work, but was about 85 today so I'm still waiting! I'm planning a 400-500 mile run around the state next spring, so have finally decided to remove the 37 year old bottom paint that's 0-3 layers thick to get the bottom a little slicker! Question: Has anyone tried Supermarine Revolution SM-1000 paint? Non-urethane, not too expensive, guaranteed for 10 years below waterline, supposed to be super tough, can apply with roller, flows out real smooth. Sound's too good to be true but perfect for a trailer boat if it is! Have ordered a quart; Carla and I are gonna split it and run some tests on it to see how easy it is to use and how tough it really is!
Other project is to redo instrument panel to put a bulkhead mount compass in front of helm and make IP more vertical so I can read the damn digital gages while sitting down! I lowered seat pedestal to move top of windshield above line of sight when seated. That worked great but now I have to stand up to read the compass or gages! :o Objective is to improve comfort/ergonomics for long runs. Denny |

I'd like to subversively fill Bigshrimpin up with some fine California ales and somehow get one of those Manly-cured Mercs out of him on the cheap :D :D :D

Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
Last year there was a lot of work under the shrinkwrap for me. Another year like that and I might be in divorce court. I hope to sneak out and take care of a few "little" projects. Steering needs to be addressed - thinking about Hyd system, and the scuppers are in bad shape. I'm sure there will be others but the Honey-Do list will need some attention.

Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
I am recovering from shoulder surgery and having sinus surgery next week. So far I have not done squat to my baby, but I have refinished one of my spearguns, and 3 of our fishing poles. I do plan on cleaning and waxing her, and trying to keep the leaves out of her. But plan on using the heck out of her as soon as I can. I do all my great fishing in the winter months down here.

Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
Here is what I would like to do, time permitting.
1. Repaint non skid deck. 2. Insert a new star marine setup on the console and rejigger the layout of my fishing electronics. Also, $$$ permitting, I would like to get the outside of my hull repainted. Peter |

Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
Completely restore a 1971 seacraft 20 new deck recore hatches make new console from nothing, teak toe rail, teak helm pod....
2nd project 1964 boston whaler 13 complete restore already rebuilt the carb on the 1976 johnson 40 and put it in the water today it ran great. 3rd project help my dad on his 23 foot formula that is now about 27 feet long with a full flotation bracket with euro transom. Gutted all foam and stringers out. Make new console. Pretty much making a new boat from a bare hull... Turn my old mako 17 into a flats boat lowergunnels and put new deck on.. Sounds scary now but we shall see what is completed by summer. The seacraft is almost ready for high build awlgrip primer. |
Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
New floors in a 76 Master Angler. Have half of old floor out and am working on getting as much info from this and other sites so that when the weather breaks in spring I'll be ready to jump in with both feet. Hopefully I'll have most of the prep work done by the time it's warm enough to work with resin. Right now the tarp is frozen under several inches of frozen snow ice crap. Also want to build a doghouse over my console and rewire but don't know if I can fit that in.
|
Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
-Build a custom fit fish box / cooler to fit between the console and raised front deck.
-Sew up a new leaning post seat cover. -Polish the scratches out of my windshield. -Rebuild an old Hurricane tarpon rod that I picked up at a yard sale (The old yellow 8 1/2' stainless wire guide ones from 40 years ago; a rare find indeed). Looks like we're in for a warm, wet, winter pattern like we had 2 years ago. The fishing was outstanding, so chances are, those projects will be put on hold! Got to have that rod done by April though, ready to sling a mullet or catfish at that first pod of Silver Kings meandering down the beach. Can't wait!! |
Re: Whats everyone got for winter projects?
I'd have to honestly say that because of $$, my winter projects on the Seafari are limited to:
1. Refastening/resealing the hull to cap joint, 2. Filling in/sealing off the original deck scuppers, 3. Replacing the cracked bronze grounding plate, and 4. Replacing the back-up aft bilge pump. (Yes, I have 3 pumps) |
